Hockey Nut
It seems that with each successive game the Islanders play, the pit gets a little deeper; no one on the team seems to have the correct "keys to the game", nothing seems to be working. For example, let's look at Michael Grabner. As of today he is still looking to add to his season opening goal total. Speeding down the ice Road Runner each game is useless without scoring. Thomas Vanek, what can I say about him. When I heard about the trade with Buffalo, the first thing I thought was, Ranger sabotage. The kick in the face was Moulson scoring 2 goals in his first game for them. Where was Vanek-I think he was in a corner somewhere-broken or was broken shortly after. I know there are other Islanders not contributing, but it would take half the night to complete the list. Moreover, the Islanders have already lost the respect of the rest of the league. Count the times the opposition uses backup goaltenders where the Islanders are concerned. Teams seem to know that whatever losing streak they are in, it ends when the Isles are in town-what a reputation to develop. I've watched the Islanders seem to loose their will to even play or to fight back. Instead, they seem to be tossed aside, rather easily by the opposition, finding themselves on the ground making "Snow Angels" as the ref points toward the floor of the goal cage.
yave1964
hang in there pal, and welcome to the forum. I thought Vanek was a brilliant pickup, I just don't know. your boys need a real netminder desperately though.
hf101
@Hockey Nut First of all Welcome to Hockey Forums! Second Snow should be fired for trading Moulson and a first round pick for Vanek. This trade completely messed with the chemistry between Tavares and Moulson, imo. Vanek was not what the Islanders needed and there is no guarantee he will sign. But that doesn't address the real problems with this team which starts in net. Snow should have obtained a solid goaltender this past summer. Snow also didn't address losing Streit this summer either. If the Islanders were to give up a first round pick it should have been for a d-man who will help them in the years to come.
ruxpin
I agree HF. If the Isles were gung ho to trade with Buffalo, they should have traded for Miller. My initial reaction to the Vanek trade was utter disbelief. What a horrible trade that made absolutely no sense whatsoever. That's the kind of trade you make when you think you're one piece away. That's like Al Roker thinking he's one hair away (away from what, I don't know). The Isles need a goalie and they need defense...bad. So they trade a winger that was doing something for a winger that hasn't skated since. Brilliant. Snow needs to go, but hopefully they have someone different on the replacement search committee than whomever hired Snow and Milbury. Welcome to the board, @Hockey Nut , Good to see you. Hockey Nut
Thanks for the warm welcome guys...I agree that the Islanders need a good solid goaltender and a General Manager that does not trade for the sole purpose of making the headlines or to demonstrate that he still earning his money (by making an occasional crappy trade). flyercanuck
Half way into his 20 year rebuild plan and Snow still has the Isles in neutral. The only reason he still has his job is Wang is a lunatic who knows absolutely nothing about hockey. It's amazing Tavares hasn't demanded to be traded away from hockey pergatory. sarsippius
@Hockey NutI have close friend who is an Isles fan, your pain sounds familiar. To this day he still refers to Snow as swiss cheese boy, going back to his awful tenure in net. I miss the Flyers-Isles as a rivalry, it was great for almost 2 decades until bad ownership and Mike Milbury destroyed a solid NHL franchise. A move to Brooklyn won't help unless they leave swiss cheese boy on the island.Good luck to your boys and welcome aboard
Hockey Nut
@sarsippius You and flyercunuk have solidly hit the nail-on-the-head!! The team is being rotted from within. I knew that the outrageous trades Snow (guide by Charles Wang) made were to weaken the Isles and decrease the numbers in the win column. That would spur a downturn in attendance, which would meet the NHL 's guidelines for moving a team based on low attendance. I recall an interview with Mike Milbury where he said, jokingly, something close to, "do you believe I still have my job?". With Charles Wank at the helm-I believe it! So now that he has his move, what's next? I am betting that the Islanders were purchased as a Wang Industries tax write off. Therefore, it would be in their best interest to keep the islanders losing. That started with hiring Milbury, creating low attendance. However, to fool the public and it seems the NHL, they emphasized the desire to move the team for the good of the team-how's that? By moving them to an arena not built for hockey and no real increase in seating capacity? Edited December 8, 2013 by Hockey Nut
Dan Nicolson
Great! So I start supporting the Islanders after getting into the NHL and I pick a team who are going though obvious pains. From what I know so far, our manager is a big fat numpty!
Polaris922
Great! So I start supporting the Islanders after getting into the NHL and I pick a team who are going though obvious pains. From what I know so far, our manager is a big fat numpty! They've been struggling for certain my friend. They have some talented players, in Tavares, Okposo, and yes, Vanek... but they just don't get the pieces to go with them all that well. Goaltending has been an issue here for some time, since Dipietro was proven nothing special.. and they just haven't addressed it. Not long ago they gave my beloved Penguins a bit of a fight in the playoffs, but as already said, they watched Streit leave without even trying to address the issue. Now they will lose Vanek too. @Hockey Nut And welcome to you! Edited February 14, 2014 by Polaris922
jammer2
@Hockey Nut Welcome. It's awesome we are starting to build a base of posters that follow the Islanders. Yeah, it's one thing to struggle, it's quite another to have a knob at the helm (Wang) who looks the other way when a GM is obviously not pulling his weight. I see rumors of the Isles potentially moving Andrew McDonald, the d-man who basically took over the top pp qb job from the departed Streit. That's all fine and dandy, but then who runs the pp? If the rumors of a possible 1st round pick are true for selling off McDonald, I guess you do it and plan on the fly, that's a very respectable return for him, and Lord knows the Isles need the influx of picks and prospects. How Snow still has a job is beyond me, the other GM's *must* snicker at him in private conversations....lol.
jammer2
@Dan Nicolson Snow is a joke, but the *real* problem is the Owner Wang, who has been ridiculed around NHL circles for quite a while. This is the owner who came up with the brilliant idea of putting Japanese Sumo Wrestlers in net, because he thought they would block more of the net....LOL! This story is from the time period when outgoing GM Neil Smith was fired, and new GM Garth Snow was hired....it's a depressing read if your an Islanders fan, pretty funny if you cheer for any other team....lol. http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/columns/story?id=2523578
jammer2
Update on Islander prospect Ryan Pulock. He's lighting it up in the WHL this season. Ryan and his 100 mph + slap shot may be the reason the Isles are contemplating trading their pp qb Andrew McDonald. It appears this kid is the real deal, and might just be on the fast track to join the big club next year. http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Dan-Petriw/Prospect-Report-Catching-up-With-Ryan-Pulock/184/57959
