So, does Schenn get suspended - UPDATE Fined $2300

In another "WTF were ya thinking" moment last night, Brayden Schenn did a hybrid punch/crosscheck/butt end at the back of Kris Versteegs head in the corner. Versteeg went down, and at least Schenn had the decency to check that he was OK, but....he was suspended once already so I'm expecting a couple games for that one. You?

Does anyone have video?

I was actually in the chat room last night with the game on the entire time but was distracted by tutoring my kid in algebra and somehow completely missed this.   They started talking about the Schenn hit in chat and I was like, "what are you all talking about?"

I saw the hit during the 2nd intermission on Hockey Tonight.  Milbury and company were discussing "the Hockey Code."  Schenn's hit/crosscheck was very high up on Versteeg.  IMO opinion it looked like Versteeg got hit up around the neck area.  I don't think there was a penalty called and Versteeg was not injured.  I jut remember Milbury stating that Shanny will probably review it.  If these are the kind of hits the league is trying to stop, then Schenn gets 1 or 2 games.  I have been scouring the internet looking for a video link but with no success.

I saw it live, my first thought was two games.

That is not to say I agree with it, to me it didn't look like it was to the head but damn close, and while cheap it was a heat of the moment thing, it didn't look premeditated just looked like a frustrated player taking out his anger. This used to be normal within the game and was never a big deal, now a review at the least, a fine, a warning, a suspension seems to be the norm.

I think Shanahan gives Brayden a call on that sequence, i would not be surprised to see him suspended , fined whatever. He hit Versteeg in the head against the glass, it should have been a penalty last night, take your pick; boarding , roughing, crosschecking.. any would fit.

I do think anything more than 2 games would be overreach, as it was part of a puck battle where one of the players got reckless.

Anyone that has ever competed in a physical game has been where Schenn was last night; frustrated, losing, still trying but being outclassed.

That sucks (i've been there more than once) and sometimes the desire to compete , and win a fing physical battle overcomes common sense.

That's a great explanation and I agree with what you say totally. It's frustrating as hell when you're trying and still getting your arse handed to you. But it doesn't excuse doing something like that...IMO it's just not a hockey play. A few short crosschecks in the back was plenty in that situation.

It should have been a 2 minute penalty...nothing more...Versteeg hammed it Barnaby style trying to draw the call. Did you see how quickly he got up as soon as he realized no call was coming? It was and should have been called but the flop in this case actually kept the refs arm down....you could see him intentionally look away as Versteeg hammed it up for the camera.

I agree.  I've seen worse at faster speed into the boards that was nothing more than a 2 minute roughing penalty.  I don't think a suspension is warranted but wouldn't be surprised to see him get at least 2 games because the NHL is a sham league anymore.
