hf101
Seems more like personal dislike by Burke than any other reason for not choosing Bobby Ryan as one of the forwards for team USA. "“He is not intense. That word is not in his vocabulary,” Burke said, according to an ESPNreport about the selection process. “It’s never going to be in his vocabulary. He can’t spell intense.” I think it is bogus that Ryan is critized for neither being a PP or a PK specialist yet he ranks fifth among American-born players with 36 points in 42 games this season. He also surpassed the 30-goal mark in four consecutive campaigns from 2008-09 to 2011-12. we surely can't say JVR surpasses those stats, however we can say JVR is in Burke's favor. Some people get attached to opinions about a player that they just can't shake, no matter what that player does. Also, too, to say by inference that JVR is "intense" seems a stretch for a guy who's motivation was questioned enough for the Flyers to dump him for a middling defenceman - unless Burke, et. al. have seen something more from JVR in camps or since the trade that was possibly "missing" when the Flyers signed him to a six-year extension. The Ryan "snub" is somewhat mystifying - I can probably find a few players I would have left off in favor of Ryan. I can't see how you could question his production and his personal story is certainly one of "intensity."
flyercanuck
I'm surprised Ryan isn't going to be on the US squad. And Burke doesn't need to be such a jerk about it. Definately making it personal there.
flyerrod
Funny about Burke's opinion...I thought GM's were supposed to be objective. Who knew? Did Ryan make homophobic remarks about Burke's son after he was drafted by him? Maybe he put the kibosh on a trade to the Leafs or something? There has got to be some reason for an "intelligent" hockey guy like Burke to have the attitude towards Ryan that he does. Just saw this and thought I would post it. http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nhl/2014/01/03/david-poile-apologizes-to-bobby-ryan-team-usa-brian-burke/4303707/ Edited January 4, 2014 by flyerrod
