Not surprised Philly is doing well now.

They were one of the Eastern teams I thought was under performing early on in the season (Ottawa was another) and both seem to be doing pretty well...especially the Flyers.

Lots of hockey to be played yet, so all sorts of stuff can happen, but just given who and how Metro division teams are playing, I'd say the only real 'lock' for a playoff spot has to be Pittsburgh.

So that means, should Philly continue doing what they have, they have just as good a shot, maybe better, at grabbing a guaranteed playoff slot than teams like the Rangers, Capitals, Hurricanes, or Devils.

I know the Flyers always have high expectations each and every year, but when one looks at the big picture and sees the still-young stars the team has, it sorta wasn't surprising the team got off the slow start it did...after all, lots of these guys are still trying to find their NHL stride and the vets that were brought over needed some time to adjust to not only their new team, but the atmosphere in Philly and the fans....but as you can see, once any adjustments were made and guys started playing the way they are capable, the team wins

We can be happy that the Olympics will take away some of the February swoon... :)

I'm pleased as punch that they're tying and breaking records from the 80s.

The only thing I want, however, hasn't been done since the 70s. These are steps along the way, but there is a long staircase still to climb.

Go Flyers.

The stretch run (after the Olympics) will be interesting. Assuming we continue to play at a decent clip - good enough for top 3 in the division - then we're guaranteed a spot. Even if we lose in the first round, it's good for the team to go through it together, and it's good for individual players too, like Couturier, Mason, Brayden Schenn, Raffl, etc. It's also good for the G and Jake to feel that pressure and see how they respond, maybe learn some things.

This is still a very young team, with a 25 year old captain.

Anyway you slice it, though, if the Flyers make the playoffs they will likely face either the Rangers, Caps, or *maybe* the sneaky Devils.

I like our chances against divisional opponents (Pens excluded).

The turnaround has been great. The scorers are heating up and the defense isn't playing like the sieve unit it has been for the past 2 years. My concern is if Mason is coming back down to earth and playing like he was in Columbus or is he just going through a little slump. Last night he looked good but I think he had a .908 save % on the past road trip. I feel like a jilted lover whenever I talk about goalies.

I think he is just going through a little slump and if thats the case, I'll take a Mason slump over the normal play of some of our past goalies!  I think we have unfairly (myself included) come to expect the world of the guy because he really kept the team afloat when they were sinking fast early in the season.  So when we see him play less super human, it looks like a slump.  He def let in some goals on the trip that he would probably have wanted back and would not have allowed earlier in the season.  Like all players, you have to ride out the bad times and enjoy he good ones.  Even if this is a slump, he is playing well enough to get the wins.  Hopefully he gets super hot again when it comes playoff time.

Loving what Mason is bringing to this team this season!

would still like to get younger next year. bigger and faster too! not asking for much

Hard to get "younger" with Streit on a 35+, Hartnell with an NMC, VLC unlikely to be moved... Timonen may come off the books (who knows what Homer will do??) and Meszaros is likely to be gone.

Beyond that, there's not a lot of "old" on the roster. I *think* everyone else is under 26 after that?

What they need is experienced players. If those experienced players also still happen to be young - Subban for example - that is great, but what they really need are a winger and d-man who are already capable. They need a solidifying presence. They really lack somebody who is poised and calm.

I feel like a part of this turnaround may be an acceptance that Printer isn't coming back. The defense has been abysmal since he got hurt and the only time it looked better besides recently is when everyone was injured and out of the lineup. Maybe it's a mental thing and some of the guys felt like they were trying to hold down the fort until St. Chris came back. Streit brings that veteran presence on the back end and maybe he along with the Berube change got these guys to realize that no one is coming to save your jobs and if you want them, you better play like it.

Not so sure about that... Everyone has known for quite some time that Pronger was never going to play again.   Comparing Pronger and Streit on defense is like comparing pencils and apples - an absolutely different class of player and talents.  Veteran presence is one thing but being a HOF presence that still defends in his own end while being able to run the PP is another.  Streit is none of those things... (Streit can run the PP but not like Pronger)

I was a fan of Streit being signed but he was not brought here to replace Pronger.  If the Players were waiting around for Pronger to come back to save the day they were (1) incredibly stupid and (2) a sad sack of players.  Again, I dont think this was the case...

This Team needs an upgrade on defense...Streit will help out on the transition and can skate the puck but his defense is pretty bad.  Those Pronger type dman are very hard to come by...  Weber would have been that guy but we all know how the storu goes...

I agree that in no way was Streit a replacement for Pronger, but he was a guy who I think stepped into that role as much as possible, clearly not being able to fill the void though.

And yes, we all knew that Pronger was done almost immediately after the incident bit that doesn't mean that the players, especially the young ones, will accept it mentally. As for the defensive unit being a sad sack of players if they were expecting him to come back, I think that would be a pretty good description of them since he went down.

Of course they need an upgrade on defense though. We can all agree on that. My heart is still bleeding for the Suter/Weber off season.
