Mario99 Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 He looks lost since coming back from injury, slower than Coots. I don't know if playing Wing and in Berube's defensive system has anything to do with his play of late. I know Detroit wanted him but didn't want to give him 5 year contract. I can't see the Flyers paying him for 5 years to play wing here, plus his place on them team is taking minutes away from younger players. Quote
off_the_post Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 I've been wondering when I would see a thread about his play. I too have noticed his performance tank. He was playing nicely at the beginning of the season while at center. Then he got hurt and he does not seem to have added much value yet up returning. I think part of the "problem" is that Schenn/Hartnell/Simmonds have been playing well and that it is where he was slated to go but Berube doesn't want to break up that chemistry. Quote

jammer2 Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 This is par for the course, Metzler once wrote he "disappears for a month at a time". Pulled this kinda stuff all the time in Tampa Bay. Should we make the playoffs, let's just hope he does not take one of those months off. 3 Quote
murraycraven Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 (edited) @ jammer@ fantatic You both hit this one on the head. VLC does disappear for stretches and this was apparent in TB as well. He is coming back from a very tough injury and playing wing. He will be fine... So next time G goes into a slump we should trade him too? Come on man... Has he played well as of late - no. He will be fine... Edited January 21, 2014 by murraycraven Quote
radoran Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 To answer the question asked: VLC has a No Movement Clause. He would need to approve any trade. So next time G goes into a slump we should trade him too? Come on man... The difference between 26-year-old Claude Giroux and 33-year-old VLC should be obvious. Just for the record, VLC has five points (one goal) in 15 games since he's been back. Quote

I think I understand the ovious age thing rad.... thx the point is that every player hits a rough patch. a back injury is not easy to come back from. My main point is that you dont trade someone who is going through a rough patch of games. He was one of the best forwards on the team before he went down w/ and injury. 15 games does not dictate an entire season nor a career. Edited January 21, 2014 by murraycraven Quote
hf101 Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 I don't think Vinny is 100% healthy, I wouldn't be surprised if he still is having some back issues. Sure he might be able to play, but he avoids to some extent contact along the boards. He seems to be there to pass rather than shoot the puck for now. Quote
hf101 Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 I wonder if the boot fits. Well there IS.... that. Quote
ruxpin Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Honestly, I think there is something to the idea that he's playing hurt. Mixed with playing out of position and his penchant for disappearing for stretches, and this is what you have. All that said, while it is unlikely a team (the Flyers, in particular) would trade him right after signing him to the contract they did, I would entertain the idea for the right deal. Quote

King Knut Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 At least take him off the shootout lineup thats not the place nor the time for a guy to break out of a slump. Otherwise, I agree. Who do we think isnt playing? besides I like the idea of having a veteran forward on this team besides Hartnell. If a great deal on a young d man comes along at deadline time, consider it if he'll waive. Otherwise I don't see the rush. Not sure there's much to be done about it anyway he was given the ck tract we should have given Jagr IMHO and jags is doing well i jersey where goals are hard to come by. But that water is under the bridge and frozen. I can't see a team trading a player they just signed because he's been playing bad "lately". King Knut Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Playing hurt or playing while healing, yeah. Did seem a rapid recovery from something like that. More than likely he reached the "can't screw it up worse by playing" stage of recovery. Maybe the O break will help. Honestly, I think there is something to the idea that he's playing hurt. King Knut Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 That's why I said the thing earlier about "if he'll waive" Then there is the NMC. Quote
murraycraven Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 I think the Chief put him on the SO list to try and build confidence. I still like VLC on this team (in 3 years I wont) but I think he is definitely fighting the injury. I dont think him playing wing is helping his confidence either. Not sure why you would bring him in if you were not going to give him a Center position. 1 Quote
King Knut Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 I think they were literally thinking of a jagr replacement. Someone to score goals for Giroux. I remember reading at the time that they asked him about playing wing before signing him. What's he supposed to say? No. Don't give me millions of extra dollars for the next 5 years? I don't want to play wing for Claude Giroux?I think the Chief put him on the SO list to try and build confidence. LOL... at least I can understand what was being posted by Mario this time! I usually need my Mario99 decoder ring!! I assume the Habs fan from Pennsy is named after Wilf "Mario" Paiement who wore 99 with the Leafs from 80-82 and not a split between a Pens legend and a Oilers superstar. 1 Quote
ruxpin Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Then there is the NMC. Would that be the "never mind contract," the "no more center" contract, or the "not much consequence" contract? Quote

murraycraven Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Because you didn't have an actual plan to build a team? Plan? We dont need no stinking plan! If there was any inkling of a plan I might be impressed. I like VLC but still think it was an odd signing. You get rid of Briere's contract and replace it w/ VLC's. Even if he was brought here to be the "jagr" replacement he is not that player. moreso when you consider he is not even on the same line with G. I hope he turns it around... Quote
AJgoal Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 I actually think the "plan" is to move Vinny back to TB in a year or two. Obviously can't happen right now, because of the whole "can't play for the team that bought you out for one year" thing, but I wouldn't be suprised if Vinny is traded back there after the young guys get a bit more seasoning. And then there's Montreal. Quote
