As pilldoc mentioned, this topic could use its own thread...

I think we need to package up a center to make this happen.  Its really our only strength.  We have centers playing wing, and Laughton is ready to make the step.

It will take quality to receive quality so, the real question remains....Who do you offer up?

I think the real question is...who's trading a top defenceman?

I think rather than "who goes" this is a better question. Who are you going to target? From there, the question becomes "what does that team want?"

Having a boatload of centers to deal is fine, but if the team you want to make a deal with is set down the middle, that's a non-starter.

Scott Laughton is "ready to make the step?" Really? Because he's lighting it up in Juniors? Couturier lit it up in Juniors and in his third year you see what they have. I'm not "disappointed" but in the end I'd rather have Olli Maatta playing D in the NHL than Laughton lighting it up in Junior.

"Best Player Available" my posterior...

Now don't go gettin' all  'realistic' on me FC :)  And I'm not necessarily suggesting pulling the trigger on this now...but maybe at some point.  Could be summertime?  But, with the TD approaching, teams will consider shuffling things.  Teams that need a good center.  Its a possibility, remote, but possible.

They will have to do something, because the time gap between the end of  Timmo/Mez et al, and the group of young prospects emerging is too long.  They will not be ready that soon.  And if they are pushed to quickly, (I know, flyers would never do this ) it will be to their detriment.  So either make an effort for a quality player, or be prepared for a few years of waiver-wire butt-plugs

That goes back to "who" are we talking about?

And what team that "needs a center" for a playoff push is giving up their #1 defenceman to get that center? What's more important to the playoffs?

It's not beyond the realm of possibility, but I wouldn't be putting everything on 17-black and hoping for the ball to drop right.

In my opnion Flyers should send Giroux and Streit for Weber and Paul Gaustad or Cullen just take back salary from them

It's time for dramitic change and rebuilt

se every few years we are going to make a drastic rebuild move until it works?

Rad - Laughton is as ready to make the step as much as any prospect can be.  Based less-so on his junior's numbers and more-so on his 'cup of coffee' with the flyers 1year ago, where he did not look 'out of place' at all.  How he will play over time, remains to be seen.  But for a guy projected as a 3rd line center, he won't make this team any worse

I'm not even sure we have a top Dman in the making from what we have in our prospect pool. At least there's finally something in the cupboard, but none of them are jumping out as a true #1 so far.

And if I did have one, I certainly wouldn't trade it away. Like a good goalie, pretty hard to come by.

I completely agree, but he's not going to make much difference either way. As a third line center, that's great.

I do believe he's "ready to make the step" and do concur that there's a logjam in front of him - which begs the question of why draft another freaking center.

But I digest.

You could target a player who is not yet established, but with an upside, who is older than the boys in the flyers pipe?  (Yes, yes...insert Luke Schenn jokes here!)

The issue is there are no #1 defensemen on the market and you are going to have to blow up this Team to try and acquire one.  When you do this (again) you are stuck back into the rebuilding mode.   Teams will not be sending off their top bona fide #1.   You can look at Teams that have a plethora of dmen that are 1 and 1A types but they hardly exist.

We are not getting a Weber type dman w/out losing a lot of your young talent and talent in the farm.   If you go this route when does the revolving door stop?   Teams like the Hawks, Wings, Ducks, Blues, etc.. all have born and bred dmen from their system.  I know this sounds crazy but drafting and developine players really does work but it requires patience.  Something this Club does not have and something the fans frankly dont have either.

The only thing I think we can hope for is a move here or there to solidify the defense.   You are not going to get a top pairing guy in this market but you might be able to grab someone that actually can play defense.  Something this current group knows nothing about...

There's this guy in Barrie ...

Aaron Eckblad  full beard at 16, special exemption to play early in the OHL.

Good skater , very mean, howitzer of a shot, smart.

all we have to do is commit to seeing him in Orange and Black .

Play the ADK kids and have some guys develop some injuries I hear Giroux's hand is acting up and Jake has that finger thing, Schenn still has that nasty cut ...

there's a guy out there, he'd be a good place to start.

I don't see any team giving up someone who is genuinely a top defenseman.

100% agree - Rad

FC - They traded Gretzky   -  just sayin' :)

Well that certainly proved that nobody is "untouchable". But teams have come to realize how important top pairing defencemen really are...and it's rare you see them traded unless the other team grossly overpays.

Wow, I never realized there was a "Justin Falk" and a "Justin Faulk" in the league.

There are actually some names on there that might be worth kicking the tires on. None of them are "that guy" but several of them look like upgrades to what we have and might not be that expensive.

Wow people are really angry what a difference in opinions just within a week or two from when they were winning.

Guys hate to break it to you but were going to half to ride it out. We are not going to be able to trade away for defense...

We just got to keep on heading forwards take our lumps and keep rebuilding through the draft...Guys the Flyers are finally doing it right don't screw it up now with arm chair gm panic moves.

Just like any team that is still not ready for cup contention and are still drafting to fill pieces that they need...there not going to be the blackhawks or pens yet guys...doing all these panic trades has put us in this position, could you imagine if we had this mentality of letting it ride years ago...

I am not talking about the RIchards, Carter but everything else. God I wish we had JVR still on the team...Wish we got Carlson instead of Eminger....
