murraycraven
We recouped the 3rd rounder but in the end all 2nd rounders come to die w/ the flyers. I dont think the really overpaid for MacDonald yet but when Homer signs him to a 4-5M deal w/ a NMC it could be ugly.
AJgoal
Short answer is yes, we overpaid a bit. But I think the fact that Vanek has pretty much made it clear he will go UFA lowered his value. Didn't think it would bottom out like that though.
King Knut
We'll see how we like him, how he fits in and if Homer is able to sign him what that deal looks like. Keep in mind, a lot of people are really hot on MacDonald. In some ways getting him yesterday kept teams like the Bruins from getting him today. I do think he'll work out more toward what we need than Mezo was. I have a feeling Homer had a bigger deal in mind when he made these two trades. Whether that deal fizzled today or was always intended to be a Draft day deal is yet to be seen. I get the idea he's playing the long con here though. Overall St. Louis in MSG scares me a bit, but then again Callahan with Stamkos in Tampa scares me less than St. Louis with Stamkos. So far no one got Kesler.Doesn't seem like Lou pulled the Brodeur Trigger. Sometimes these things take longer to come out, but I think we may have seen Homer exercise some restraint and buy some cap space... for what exactly, I don't know, but still... Not a bad deal. I thought for sure that Anaheim was going to trade for him. (Otherwise, why trade Penner?) I wonder if NYI was asking for way too much & then had to settle for a low-ball deal at the last minute to keep from getting stuck with him. And Montreal??? We save salary cap space & actually got a pick for a player who has been a healthy scratch way too many times this season. It's a win-win. flyercanuck
@AndyS How do we save capspace? Mez was gone after this season, unless you meant for the rest of the season, which, doesn't really matter. And Homer has Timonens $6 million freeing up that will be burning a hole in his pocket. My guess is MacDonald gets a fair chunk of that. TimKerrFan12
What the player is making is such a huge factor now because of the salary cap. A lot of teams are happy to get rid of that contract. Years ago, if there was no salary cap involved the trades made today would look a lot different, plus the UFA factor is there as well. The Flyers are always maxed out for cap space which makes these higher paid players unattainable.
