I'll be posting more about the game later. It was a busy night on campus with football and volleyball also taking place.

This one was 0-0 until 30 seconds were left in the 2nd period. The Bisons made a couple of bad clears and then were guilty of turning their back on the play and it was suddenly 1-0. There was a string on chintzy penalty calls which disrupted the flow of the game. Saturday's matinee rematch goes at 1:00.

This was yet another hard-fought game. The Bisons won it with their only goal of the weekend, a point shot by rookie defenceman Josh Elmes, with his first goal as a Bison. Friday;s game was scoreless after almost 40 minutes, and this one was scoreless for 54 minutes. Even with 10 of top top 20 scorers in the league on the ice.

The worst thing of the weekend was the officiating. Friday night was a whistleblowing contest between the two referees. Saturday saw only one ref at the game but he still made several bad calls. This picture is worth 1,000 words:

This hip-check by Kyle Rous was called as 2 minutes for tripping.

Devan Dubyk was the first star, as is usual for the winning goaltender in a 1-0 game. GoBisons.ca also posted a photo of his break-away save, made when the game was still scoreless.

For the Bisons, Rous ws in for Bresciani and Dudar was in for Rowinski. The Cougars switched goaltenders, and Marsgall was in for Stephens.

The conference bye week comes up next week. Due to scheduling abnormalities occasioned by CW sending a team to the Universiade this year, the Bisons will gace Lethbridge after the bye then play Alberta - Calgary - UBC - Alberta - UBC - Lethbridge all in doubleheader weekends. Very odd.

Anyhow, the New-Kittens-on-the-Block are now 6-2 and the Bisons 5-3 in what promises tio be a tight race in the CW.

The CIS and CW schedule/results pages were lacking boxscore links as I post. But similar boxscores can be located at the other links I posted.

The plucky Banjo-Cats had some fight in them in their Saturday rematch in the Town of Bedrock. The Dinos came out very serious about a sweep, and outshot Regina 19-4 in the 1st period. But all they had was a 1-0 lead. (Very reminiscent of the Flames-Blackhawks game from earlier this week.) Two more goals in the 2nd period could well have killed the hopes Regina may have had about entering the W column. But Regina rallied to score twice in the 3rd, whilst outshooting Bedrock U 12-8 in the process. Too little, too late.

It is not even November yet, and Regina is a full 8 points out of a playoff berth. Calgary is now tied with MRU for 2nd place. After a bye week, Calgary will face Saskatchewan and UBC will face Regina.

The Evil Monkeys started fast a built themselves a 4-0 lead after the 1st period. In the past, that would have meant game over. However, Sask scored 3 unanswered goals in the 2nd period (on just 11 shots on goal). That seemed to wake up the Monkeys. They did not sit nack to protect a one-goal lead. They outshot Sask 18-7 in the 3rd period and scored two more goals.

The Monkeys are now in 1st place by themselves at 7-1-0. They will spend the bye week in the States on a weekend tour, The Banjo-Mutts are now on a 4-game losing streak and are 4-4-0. Their next action will be in Calgary in two weeks.

The H0rny Ones were hanging into this one until 2 late UBC goals padded the scoreline. The shots were 35-31 for UBC, so this was not one of those goaltender-makes-it-close kind of games.

UBC vaults to 4-2-2, and they are tied in points with Manitoba, in 4th place. Lethbridge is tied with Regona in 7th. After the bye week, UBC is off to Regina and Lethbridge hosts Manitoba.

This game followed the Monkeys' prototype for this year. They dominate their opponents on the shot clock, yet the result was relatively close. In the 1st period the Monkeys had a 16-4 advantage in shots and led 2-0. The rest of the way the shots were 25-17, yet the Monkeys could only score the once. Kelly Mu-u-ucha recorded the shutout.

The Skull and Boneheads somehow won the NCAA title in 2013. This was their first game of the season. The Monkeys are now 12-4-0. On Saturday, the Apes will play Dartmouth.

First up, Dartmouth, NS has not started up a new college with a hockey team. This is a team from New Hampshire in the USA.

Once again, the Evil Monkeys squashed their opponents. But this time they capitalized on their chances. They outshot the Greenies 15-4 and 11-1 in the first two periods.

After a bye week the CW returns to regularly scheduled programming. After a nice pre-season, the Bisons opened going 0-2 in the Town of Bedrock. However, they have now won 5 of 6 and are tied for 4th, only 4 points out of 1st place.

Lethbridge, on the other hand, is looking desperate. They are winless and tied with Regina for last. A distant last. Presently, Saskatchewan sits in 6th place at 4-4-0. Making up 8 points in 20 games is a tough task. And the H0rny Ones have been outscored 46-12 so far. That is hard to believe.

Here's what their series preview has to say:

To say the start of the 2014-15 season has been a struggle for the Pronghorns would be an understatement, but heading into a home-heavy part of the schedule, the 'Horns have a chance to right the ship.

Struggling to find consistency in their game on the road, the Pronghorns have been solid in both of their two home games this season despite losing both contests. The 'Horns opened the season with a close 2-0 loss to the Mount Royal Cougars and lost a tightly contested 3-2 game to the CIS ranked Calgary Dinos.

If the 'Horns are going to turn this season around, one area that can be focused on would be the play of their specialty teams. The 'Horns have only scored two power play goals in two games and are ranked seventh (6.5%)in Canada West. They are also ranked seventh in penalty killing (71.4%).

NCAA transfer Brandon Clowes and second-year forward Mitch Maxwell lead the 'Horns in scoring with four points apiece. Clowes is also tied for the team lead in goals with two. Defenceman Tim Campbell and Mike Forsyth have also scored twice this season.

The point must be made that Lethbrigde has played just two home games, parts of home-and-home series. From what I saw of them last year they do play hard. They will win a game some time, and the Bisons hope they will not be the unlucky team.

This used to be a key match-up. Two teams battling one another for 5th place year after year. This year, UBC is still fighting for 5th (or better) but Regina has slumped more than even I thought they would. They have a fairly veteran line-up, and were barely pipped for the 6th and final playoff spot last year. For two years I thought they over-achieved. Perhaps this season is the karma balancing out. Regina has not been blown away, like Lethbridge. The problem is that in 8 games they have only scored 8 goals. This ain't soccer, Kitties!

UBC is now 4-2-2 and in the log-jam. The Tweety-Birds have established themselves as a tough opponent. If they want to become a respected top-4 team they need to claim 4 points in away series like this one.

SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES (4-4-0, 6-5-2, OHT36 #13)

This should produce some very telling results. Bedrock U has done very well against teams outside Calgary. Their two regular season losses were both against MRU. Their two pre-season losses were to MRU and the Calgary Flames (prospects edition). They must feel uncomfortable in the presence of cowboy hats. Against teams from elsewhere they are 10-0-1.

The Banjo-Mutts are the reigning University Cup runner-up. However, they have looked very mid-range from the start of the pre-season onwards. They won their first four conference games (against Regina and UBC) but have now lost 4 straight (against Manitoba and Alberta). So where do they belong? Could they be an away team in the quarter-finals?

This is the feature match-up of the weekend. #1 v #2. Although I have MRU ranked #1, I do not believe that they are the favourites in this match-up.

The Evil Monkeys have been out-shooting teams yet having trouble scoring at times. They are not the dominant force they were a year ago, when they went 45-4-1. They are now an OTL away from matching last year's loss total. Of note, the Apes have thus far played the bottom four teams in the CW. They will close the first half against tougher opposition. However, over the last two weekends, against Saskatchewan and NCAA teams, they were showing signs of living up to their billing. They have scored 38 goals, which leads the CW.

How good are the New-Kittens-on-the-Block? From the start of pre-season on they have amassed a great record. I saw them play Manitoba first-hand and they looked strong, but no stronger than Manitoba. They have a strong defence. They and Bedrock U have both surrendered just 12 goals in 8 games. MRU comes in having split their last two series, against UBC and Manitoba. IMO this weekend will tell us if they are a contender or a solid quarter-finalist.

The Bisons found that the H0rny Ones are a decent enough team on home ice. Oddly, this was their first home series of the season. Thus far they have had two home-and-home series against Southern Alberta rivals, and two away series.

After finding two high-scoring lines in the early going, the Herd has now scored just 4 goals in their last 4 games. There has been no shortage of chances, however. On Friday they 36 shots and on Saturday increased that to 42.

Brett Dudar scored his first two goals as a Bison (one on each night) and Taylor Dickin notched his 3rd of the season. Devan Dubyk was in goal on Friday and stopped 30 of 32 shots (the final goal was an emoty-netter). Byron Spriggs saw his first regular season start and had dubious results. He gave up the 5 goals on just 23 shots.

These losses could prove devastating for the Bisons. Instead of being all alone in 3rd place they are in 5th, albeit just a weekend away from 3rd. Next week the Bisons host the Evil Monkeys whilst Lethbridge hosts Regina.

The Banjo-Cats have hit the win column! I have now stats, but UBC-Regina series ending in a split is nothing at all unusual over the years. Maybe things are just getting back to normal in the CW. UBC must now face Bedrock U where making up ground will not be easy. Regina would have to sweep Lethbridge to evacuate the basement.

The Banjo-Mutts appear to be just a cut below this year. They have now been swept by Alberta, Bedrock U, and Manitoba. I don't recall them starting 0-6 against the Big Four. Now Lethbridge dreams of catching them for a playoff berth! The Mutts host MRU next weekend in a series that may define both sides. Bedrock U is off to British California where they will be trying to cement themselves as a CIS-wide contender.

The Evil Monkeys turned the upstart Kittens into Pumpkins on Friday night. It was a good-ol' whoopin'. Saturday was a different story. The teams chose a home-and-home format this year and the venue change paid dividends for the Kittens. They had a 3-1 lead with just 7 minutes left. Then they fell apart. Suddenly, the Monkeys are cruising and the Kittens are part of a large mid-pack group where anything can happen.

The Evil Monkeys shot out of the gate like a monkey out of hell. They outshot the Bisons 26-7 but the score was just 1-0.

The play evened out in the 2nd and 3rd periods and the game was a nail-biter. Shaq Merasty scored the only goal of the 2nd period, which ended 1-1. Taylor Dickin gave the Bisons a 2-1 lead 6 minutes into the 3rd period. However, the Primates rallied with two goals 13 and 15 minutes into the period to put the Monkeys back in front.

In the end, Deven Dubyk stopped 43 of the 46 shots he faced for the Bisons and Kurtis Mucha stopped 18 0f the 20 he faced for the Monkeys.

The rematch goes Saturday at 6:00 at the Wayne Fleming Arena. It will not be available on-line.

Big road win for the New-Kittens-on-the-Block. Saskatchemawan should maybe start looking over their shoulders. Lethbridge and Regina start their weekend series on Saturday and if one of those teams could sweep then the Mutts might need to buckle down just to make the playoffs.

Williams got the nod for the Thunderbirds, falling to 1-2-1 and a 2.74 goals against average after stopping 21 of 24 shots Friday.

This game was very similar to Friday's, the only difference being that the Evil Monkeys scored an empty net goal to seal the victory. The Monkeys started fast and accumulated a big lead on the shot clock (15-3) but only a 1-0 lead on the scoreboard. The 2nd period evened out (the Bisons outshot the Apes 10-7) and each team scored twice. All was then quiet until the empty=netter.

Bison goals were scored by Reid Gow (his first as a Bison) and Shaq Merasty (his 6th, and 2nd of the weekend). Deven Dubyk stopped 32 of 35 shots he faced in goal. Reddick, Koper, Foster, and Hickmott scored for the Monkeys, and Luke Siemens was the winning goalie.

The Bisons fall to 5-7-0, a record badly damaged by the losses to Lethbridge. The Monkeys are now 11-1-0.

The CW schedule will now take an odd twist. Due to the CW sending a men's team to the Universiade the schedule was shuffled. So instead of the teams playing one round-robin then reversing home ice for the second round-robin, we have a shuffling. The Bisons will host Calgary then visit UBC to meet for the first time and then visit Alberta to finish with them.

The Mutts could ill-afford another sweep on home ice to a mid-ranked team. This win salvaged a must-needed split. The win moves the Mutts to 5-7-0 and MRU falls to 7-5-0.

This series was in a Saturday-Sunday format. The Banjo-Cats needed to salvage a split, and they got it in convincing fashion. The H0rny Ones fall to 3-9-0 and the Kittens improve to 2-8-0.

In the 1st period Regina treated the `Horns like a ball of catnip. Shots were 16-3 and Regina held a 2-0 lead. They never slowed down at all, either. They held a 4-1 lead after the 2nd. And then they piled on 21 shots on goal in a scoreless 3rd period. Mitch Kilgore picked up the win in his 7th appearance of the season. The `Horns split the game between Tait and Shymko.

This is usually one of the better match-ups of the season. I will only be able to attend the Friday game (darn!) and am hoping the Bisons can halt their 4 game skid. The Bisons were 5-3 before the bye week and 0-4 after. The two losses in Lethbridge stand out like a sore thumb. Other than that weekend, the team has done a really good job blending in the influx of new players. Deven Dubyk (the new #1 goaltender) has a .928 save % and Sahq Merasty and Jordan DePape continues to score. Now they need to get the rest of their top two lines going again.

Bedrock U have been swept by MRU and otherwise are off to a good start, holding down 2nd place. They are likely to split the series between the Lazaruk/Deserres goaltending combo. Although Calgary swept the Herd 4-1 and 6-1 to start the season, over the last 5 years about half of their games have gone to OT, including the deciding game of last year's conference semi-final series.

UBC beat Saudi Alberta in the pre-season and then split their season-opening series. That was a good time to play the Evil Monkeys. They were looking very vulnerable back then. They have since found their form and are perched atop the standings and the OHT36 rankings. This will be a good measuring stick for the Tweety-Birds, as they currently sit in the midst of the CW standings.

The Bisons halted a four game losing skid with a convincing win over Bedrock U Friday night at the Wayne Fleming Arena. In a years-long rivalry typified by overtime games, the mold has been broken. All three games between these teams thus far have been one-sided romps for the home team.

The Bisons appear to have some injury woes. Defenceman Kyle Rous was drssed as a forward. Here's how they lined up:

The 1st period was scoreless. The Bisons held an 11-9 edge on the shot clock and had a distinct territorial advantage for the bulk of the period.

The Bisons took control in the 2nd period. Reid Gow opened scoring with his 2nd of the season. IMO the turning point occurred when each team had a two-man advantage. The Bisons held the Dinos to very few scoring chances on their's. However, when the tables were turned the Bisons scored twice in a strech where Bedrock U took 3 overlapping penalties. Bison PP scorers were Aaron Lewadniuk and Justin Augert, with his 1st as a Bison. The Bisons ended the period with a 3-0 lead and a 12-4 edge on the scoreboard.

There was very little activity in the 3rd period. The Bisons appeared happy to see the clock tick down. Jesse Paradis made it 4-0. Ryan Harrison thwarted Deven Dubyk's quest for a shut-out with a shorthanded goal less than 9 minutes from the end.

The victory improves the Bisons to 6-7-0 and in 5th place, 2 points out of 4th, 4 points out of 3rd, and 6 points behind 2nd place Bedrock.

Saturday's rematch starts at 6:00 pm at the Wayne Fleming Arena at the U of M.

This much-hyped series was just what the Banjo-Cats needed against their gap-toothed cousins. To me, it seems that underdogs have a great record in university games that are billed as "rivalry" games with larger than usual crowds. (Like when then-lowly MRU beat Bedrock at the Saddledome.) Three different Kittens scored and Lucas Gore got the W in goal. Ryan Holfeld was tagged with the loss in his usual Friday night start in the Mutts' goal.

The teams will hop on their tractors and ox-carts for the trip to Saskatown for the Saturday night rematch. Regina (and Lethbridge for that matter) could pull within 2 points of the Huskies with a win.

Although the Tweety-Birds had this one tied 1-1 almost mid-way through the 2nd period, the Evil Monkeys had this one under control. In fact, with a 3-1 lead after two periods, they outshot UBC 12-4 in the final frame, clearly not allowing UBC any hope for a rally. Frankly, the Bisons' results look pretty good in hindsight when one sees how the Apes have been dominating lately. This one saw Mucha v Hewitt in goal. James Dobrowolski scored twice for the Monkeys. On a day when Manitoba beat Bedrock U for the Hardy Cup football championship, the Dinos needed some consolation. They got it in the form of a weekend split.

I had to miss the game because my son had a game. This was, as expected, a tight battle all along. After two periods the shots were 19-a-piece but the Dinos held a 2-0 edge on the scoreboard. The Bisons took themselves out of the running for a comeback by taking 6 minors and a misconduct in the 3rd period, whilst Bedrock U took just one minor. Deven Dubyk was once again in the Bison goal and Bedrock continued to rotate, going with Jacob DeSerres.

The Dinos are now 10-4-0 and meet up with the Evil Monkeys for 4 games in the next 3 weeks. At the same time the 6-8-0 Bisons will be facing UBC.

In an arena filled with the joyous sounds of banjos and kazoos the Canine Hillbillies gained a measure of revenge on the Feline Hillbillies with a 2-1 shoot-out victory. This was a key win for the Mangy Ones. The point they gained gives them a 5-point bulge in the race for a playof berth and pulls them even with Manitoba just 2 points behind UBC in the race for 4th.

Regina has rebounded quite well. This was a 3-point weekend. And it was not one where a goaltender stole a point. They outshot Sask 41-39 on the night, including 21-5 in the 2nd period. Lucas Gore was again in goal for Regina, and Sask continued their rotation going with Jordon Cooke.

The Evil Monkeys have certainly picked it up a notch. They outshot the Tweety-Birds 44-10 in their 2nd romp of the weekend. Levko Koper scored twice for the Monkeys and Luke Siemens got the W in goal.

The H0rny Ones have shown that they are much tougher team now then at the start of the season. They had previously been doing well at home. This weekend, they also put up a credible performance on the road. MRU sits comfortably in 3rd place. Lethbridge is 6 points out of a playoff berth. But with a double-header against Sask next weekend are not out of it just yet. Dalyn Flette again picked up a win for Dalyn Flette while Warren Shymko took the loss for Lethbridge.

On a weekend where the CW features series between teams who have not faced one another so far this season, the Bison hockey squad is out in British California. They earned themselves a well-deserved victory on Friday night. UBC had a good on-line presentation to showcase a solid performance by the Bisons.

Devan Dubyk saved 33 of the 34 shots he faced. (He now has a 2.02 GAA and a.933 save percentage.) Jordan DePape scored both Bison goals, his 6th and 7th of the season. The first goal was a chip-in from the slot following a charge up ice by Channing Bresciani. The winner was a PP goal with less than 2 minutes to go, when he deflected a point shot from Brock Sutherland.

Eric Williams held the Tweety-Birds in the game, stopping 38 out of 40 shots he faced.

The game was very close and both sides generated more than the usual amount of scoring chances. It appeared that the Bisons wore down the Tweety-Birds as the game went on. They had two powerplays in the last 10 minutes, generated as a result of concentrated offensive pressure.

The result leaves both teams and Sask tied for 4th with 14 points. This means that a quarter-final playoff series between these teams is a distinct possibility.

The Saturday matinee rematch will start at 2:00 PST, 4:00 CST and can be seen on-line at CanadaWest.tv.

A Cougar v Cougar confrontation adds a little spark to any Friday night. The Banjo-Cats outshot the New-Kittens-on-the-Block 39-33, but Cam Lanigan in the MRU goal held the fort. The win puts MRU into a solid 3rd place with a 10-5-0 record. Regina falls to 3-11-1 and are 7 points out of a playoff spot. Regina has been playing decent hockey lately, and cannot be counted out of the rematch, which goes Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

This home-and-home series went in an unusual Thursday-Friday format. When Bedrock U won the opener one could say "that's nice for them". The Evil Monkeys dominated the shot clock, 46-21. But that 3-0 lead they spotted to the Dinos was just too much. The final Dino goal was into an empty net.

Then when Bedrock U waltzed into Edmontown and picked up a sweep, a race for 1st place was suddenly on. The Monkeyas are 13-3-0, and the Dinos are 12-4-0. The Bisons did well against both teams the last two weeks, with two narrow losses to the Apes and a split with Bedrock.

The H0rny Ones are no pushovers on home ice. The Banjo-Mutts discovered that on Friday night. Sask dominated the 1st period, leading 3-0 and outshooting their hosts 16-10. The 2nd period was funny, in that Lethbridge scored twice on only 5 shots. The stage was set for a tight 3rd period. Lethbridge answered the challengeby bombarding Ryan Holfeld with 18 shots in the 3rd period. He stopped them all to nail down the W.

The win allows Sask to tie UBC and Manitoba in 4th place wigth 14 points. Lethbridge falls to 3-12-0 and a point behind Regina.

The Bison hockey team helped heal the hurt of the football team's Uteck Bowl loss (what a classic game that was!) by completing a sweep of UBC on Saturday afternoon.

The Herd played down a man. They often travel with just 20 when air travel is involved. Kyle Rous dressed Friday, but not Saturday. They still had just 10 forwards, so more than likely a defenceman was conscripted to the forward lines.

Offence was generated from unusual sources. Darren Bestland scored his first two goals of the season (the 2nd one coming into an empty net) and Joel Schreyer recorded his first as a Bison. As usual Deven Dubyk started in goal and registered another banner outing, stopping 27 of the 28 shots he faced. He now has a record of 8-6-0 with two shutouts, a 1.95 GAA and a .935 save percentage. The only goaltender with a better save percentage is Kriz Lazaruk from Calgary.

The result leaves the Bisons tied for 4th with Sask at 8-8-0 whilst UBC sits in 6th at 6-8-2.

The first semester ends next weekend with the Bisons off to visit the Evil Monkeys and UBC is off to visit Calgary. Oddly, the CW is reversing the draw of week 6 in week 9. They repeated week 1 in week 7. Usually they repeat week 1 in week 8, win week 9, etc. But not this year, supposedly due to the mess created by the Universiade.

When Cougars do battle on a Saturday night, country music is normally involved. However, this was a matinee on ice and the only Cougars wore skates, rather than piles of makeup, high heels, and hairspray. Both scenarios can be entertaining in their own way, I suppose.

Nevertheless, the ascent of the CW lesser-lights from cannon fodder to basic opponent seems to be well-established. The Green Cougars deserved a weekend split and got it. MRU held a 2-1 lead head into the 3rd period before the Banjo-Cats got control of the catnip. Regina had a 3-2 lead in the final minute of play then scored into an empty net. MRU got that back with mere seconds remaining.

Regina remains in 7th but now pulls to within 5 points of UBC. MRU sits 3rd, 4 points behind Calgary and 4 ahead of Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Both sides will host series next weekend. Regina will face Lethbridge and MRU will face Saskatchewan.

The scoreline is a bit misleading here. The H0rny Ones actually gave the Banjo-Mutts all they could handle, even outshooting them 30-25 on the night. After Lethbridge tied the game in the 3rd period at 1-1, Sask scored two goals 11 seconds apart to vault into the lead. They notched another about 3 minutes later and an empty-netter to demoralize the `Horns.

In the odd pattern of games on this year's CW schedule, these two teams are playing each other for the second time in just 3 weeks and will be finished with each other, at least until playoffs.

When the two sides played in Friendly Manitoba the games were very close, with the Evil Monkeys winning 3-2 and 4-2 (with an empty-netter). The Monkeys followed with a convincing sweep of UBC and then a surprise sweep at the hands of Bedrock U. Meanwhile, the Bisons earned a split with Bedrock U and then swept UBC.

The Apes had looked to have rebounded to their form of 2013-14 when they won the national championship. But they appear to be devilled by their tendency to lose games despite enjoying a vast advantage on the shot clock.

Saudi Alberta has an incredible 651 shots (an average of 40.7 shots per game). By comparison, the Bisons have 457 shots, or 28.6 per game (which is pretty average). The onslaught of shots usually works well for Alberta. The Bisons have 38, which is in the meaty part of the CW curve. To put this in perspective, MRU is second in shots (502) and goals (51).

The Monkeys are paced by two key forwards: Jordan Hickmott (12-14-26) and T.J. Foster (11-13-24). No other Primate has more than 5 goals. All together, Alberta has 7 top 20 scorers, while the Bisons have 3.

The gap on the defensive side of the game is comparatively tiny. Alberta is 2nd in GAA (33 GA) and Manitoba is tied for 3rd (39 GA). The Monkeys rotated goaltenders last year, and followed suit for much of this year. Now, however, veteran Kurtis Mu-u-ucha has taken over the #1 ranks from Luke Siemens. The Bisons have ridden Deven Dubyk. His .935 save percentage is better than either Alberta goaltender and has been a big factor for the Bisons. He is bound to be tested inside the Monkey Cage.

If the Bisons could even manage a split of this series they would be in an excellent position down the home stretch. They will be finished with the #1 and #2 teams in conference standings, and if either in or tied for 4th they would be quite happy.

The odds of either cellar-dweller making the playoffs are not good. However, those odds would go up markedly with a 4 point weekend. Regina has the best chance, being 5 points behind UBC. Both sides have shown improvement since the start of the season. However, I believe that both will be largely confined to a spoiler's role in the new year.

IMO the New-Kittens-on-the-Block have to some extent over-achieved so far. I fully expected them to be a solid mid-ranked team in the CW. However, they have flirted with true contender status through this first semester. They currently have 20 points (4 points better than Sask and Manitoba) and enjoy a 3rd place standing. A sweep of the Banjo-Mutts would make them prohibitive favourites to secure at least a 4th place finish, which would allow them to host a quarter-final series.

MRU has the scoring. Their 50 goals is 2nd best in the CW. The question is now in goal. The question now is in goal. Dalyn Flette racked up a .934 save percentage. However, Cam Lanigan has had to fill in while Flette has been innjured. He is sporting a .914 save percentage, which is also very good, however it seems the Blue Cats aren't playing with quite the same confidence. They are coming off a split with Regina.

But what about the Saskatchewanites? They have been a CW power for a long time now, and in fact used their host status to get all the way to the national final last season. But their team has been slowly downgrading. IMO if they are swept in this series they will be in serious trouble.

Not so long ago these teams were fighting it out for 4th place on an annual basis, and always with Bedrock U coming out on top. Since then the Prehistoric Ones have vaulted into contender status whilst UBC has been in battles for the final playoff berth.

UBC is currently in a slump, being swept the last two weekends by Alberta and Manitoba. Bedrock U is coming off a sweep of Alberta. These teams did play 3 weeks ago, and split.

Like Manitoba, UBC will be done with Calgary and Alberta after this weekend. a split here would probably leave them delighted.

This game followed the usual trend. The Evil Monkeys racked up the shots but the scoreboard remained nip-and-tuck all the way through. The Bisons got goals from Channing Bresciani (his 1st as a Bison, which tied the game at 1-1) and a pair of goals by Shaq Merasty (his 6th and 7th, which tied the game at 3-3 in the 2nd period). However, the Monkeys were able to regain the lead heading into the 3rd period, and a late insurance goal in the 3rd put the game away. Deven Dubyk stopped 39 of the 44 shots he faced in the Bison goal, while Kurtis Mucha stopped 13 of 16 shots in the Monkey goal.

Both of these teams really need points in a frantic bid to get back in the playoff race. The Banjo-Cats pciked up the win, moving to 5-11-1 on the season, and within 4 points of UBC and 6th place. At 3-14-0 it would appear that the H0rny Ones will nit be mounting a late season surge.

The struggling Tweety-Birds flew into the Town of Bedrock and came from behind to force OT before losing to the Dinos. Chris Collins scored twice for Bedrock U, including the OT winner. There were low shot totals, 24 by UBC and 23 for Calgary. Jacob DeSerres started for Bedrock and Mark Hewitt for UBC. After Eric Williams performed well against the Bisons last week, it is surprising that they did not go back to him.

This series is perhaps one that will redfine the status of these two teams. MRU's win leaves them safely tucked into 3rd place. While the bonus point boosts Sask into 4th, they are in quite a battle with Manitoba and UBC and have the toughest schedule down the home stretch. The Banjo-Mutts appeared to have this one in the bag. They held leads of 2-0 and 3-1. It took two late goals 4 seconds apart to draw MRU even. Cam Lanigan got the W for MRU stopping 22 of just 25 shots. Meannwhile, Ryan Holfeld stopped 35 shots for Sask.

Once again, the Bisons kept it close against the Evil Monkeys but were unable to collect any points in the standings. Although the Bisons now fall to 8-10-0 in the standings, they are finished with the top two teams in the conference (Monkeys and Bedrock U). Against their remaining 5 opponents, the first time around they went 7-3-0. If they repeat that record they could finish 3rd, and certainly no worse than 4th.

The Bisons played one man short. Brett Dudar dressed for Friday's game, but not for Saturday's. Deven Dubyk was once again in the Bison goal and stopped 30 of 33 shots. The Monkeys rotated goalies, and Luke Siemens stopped 13 of the 15 shots he faced.

Shaq Merasty gave the Bisons a 1-0 lead at the 1st intermission with his 8th goal of the season. However, the Apes scored twice in the 2nd period, with the combo of Hickmott and Foster hitting the scoreboard. The Bisons weren't done, however, as Jordan DePape recorded his 8th goal of the season early in the 3rd period. Riley Kieser recorded the winner mid-way through the 3rd.

The entire conference now breaks for first term exams, followed by the Christmas holiday. Conference play resumes on Saturday, January 3rd when the entire conference will play Saturday-Sunday double-headers. The Bisons will host UBC Saturday at 6:00 and Sunday at 1:00.

Friday night's key loss must have disheartened the H0rny Ones. On the other hand, the Banjo-Cats are no doubt delighted with their matinee triumph. They are now just 3 points out of a playoff berth. However, they are now done with Lethbridge and Sask, against whom they went 4-3-1. Against their remaining opponents they are only 2-8-0 so far. Lucas Gore got the win in the Hillbilly goal, and Warren Shymko and Alex Sirard split the duties in the Lethbridge goal.

The Tweety-Birds burst out of their 5-game slump with a much-needed victory in the Town of Bedrock. The linked U of C report describes UBC's goals as "fluky", followed by a late empty-netter. I doubt that the Dinos will be able to mount a threat for 1st place now. Eric Williams got the win in goal for UBC, while Bedrock stuck with Jacob DeSerres. They usually rotate, however Kris Lazaruk did not dress for either game. UBC are the Bisons' next opponent, which IMO will be the series to decide which team will finish in the top 4 and host a playoff round.

IMO this series represents a real tipping point in the season. MRU has now solidified their 3rd place standing, sitting just 2 points back of Bedrock U. Sask could be a quarter-final road team. They are tied with UBC and one point ahead of Manitoba. But after they play Lethbridge next weekend, they finish with 8 games against teams who beat them 6 times in 8 tries so far. Cam Lanigan again got the win for MRU, with Flette still on the shelf. Sask continued to rotate goaltenders, starting Jordon Cooke.

The annual game (at least since 2009) between a CIS team and the Team Canada Juniors will in fact be two games this year, on Dec 13th and 14th. Both games will be held at the Mattamy Athletic Centre, the former MLG. The CIS team will be a selection from the three universities located in The Big Lemon, Ryerson, Toronto, and York. Each side will contribute 7 players and a coach.

Last year a similar game was played. TC usually beats Ontario teams but is less successful against Canada West and AUS teams. I have maintained a list of the CW v TC games:

What a dismal performance by the Selects from The Big Lemon. The Ryerson Rams hosted the game, and supplied 1/3 of the squad. The York Lions and Toronto Blues also supplied 1/3 each.

Neither Petan nor Morrissey dressed for TC. Local boy Madison Bowey did, and I believe I saw him practicing with the Bisons a year ago.

Last year Team Canada played a select squad from the same 3 institutions and won 3-0. The rematch goes Sunday at 12:00 CST, 1:00 EST.
