So far, the LeagueStat roster page has not been updated. This prevents me from doing an arrivals/departures pre-season story on the conference. It also makes handicapping the league a challenge. The CW site links do provide a coaches' poll and a pre-season story on each team, so that would be a good place to start.

As a result, this post is one part season preview and one part weekend preview.

The Bison roster page was just updated to 2014-15 today. Even from earlier this morning, two new names (who did not play in Toronto) have vanished. One new name is Dustin Bruyere, from the Selkirk Steelers. He will wear #22. Darren Bestland (the former #22) is not listed. So his inclusion in Toronto must have been in error. In any event, this is what I have compiled:

SYNOPSIS:

Duval was one of the best players in the CIS and will be tough to replace. Cain and Ciarelli formed the basis of an effective checking 3rd line. Otherwise the departures are 4th and 5th liners. Five of the top six forwards are back. I am anxious to see what the arrivals actually look like on ice. On paper, they are an upgrade. Merasty has been sizzling in the pre-season and could be a Duval. Robinson is highly touted. The others should at least equal those they replaced.

SYNOPSIS:

Until last year, Crowley and Schappert were typically rewarded as two of the top four defencemen in the CWUAA in post-season all-star selections. That is pure blue chip and hard to replace. Bobbee was also a team top 4 calibre player. That's a load of talent to lose. However, Schappert missed most of last season. A few years back the Bisons had 10 defencemen and for the bulk of the season formed a 4th line of defencemen playing up front. For some reason, they have a pipeline to solid blueliners. Gow was one of the best offensive defencemen in the WHL last year. Hunter is a highly-touted defensive type from the Wheaties. They should be regulars. Bresciani and Elmes are Junior A/US Major grads and apparently had a load of ice time in Toronto.

SYNOPSIS:

Caligiuri held off a challenge from Dubyk to win back the #1 spot last year. Since Steve Christie left there have been close battles in the Bison goal. In 2011-12 Caligiuri started over Jesse Deckert. Then in 2012-13 Deckert won the battle. I am not sure what to expect. Traditionally, a good Junior A prospect has to play a year or two as 3rd string if he wants to move up. That could be the plan for Spriggs, who played brilliantly for the Blues in the MJHL. Jensen and Dubyk each had shut-outs against Toronto and I would not be surprised to see each get a start against Bedrock.

I hope to get enough information on Calgary to break down their arrivals and departures. Their exihibiton roster at LeagueStat listed 29 players, and I don't think they will all make the team. Right now, there are some known major departures:

That's a top 3 forward and 3 top 4 defencemen.

The Dinos got off to an incredible start last year (19-0-1). They were unable to keep up the pace down the stretch and fell behind Alberta. The Bisons had a tough start, mostly because they could not generate offence. By the playoffs the Bisons had risen to Calgary's level. When they met in the semi-final round, Calgary won the deciding game in overtime.

The Bisons' weakest performances in the pre-season were the 3rd games in 3 nights (or afternoons, as it happened). Otherwise they did very well, in fact better than last year's pre-season. With all their games being on the road so far, I have not seen them first-hand.

What's the outlook for these teams? The Dinos are a consenus 2nd, but I believe they could knock off the Monkeys, or even fall as far as 3rd due to their blue-line losses. The Bisons are likely to fall into the 3rd-6th range. I suspect both Calgary and Alberta will fall back a bit. For somebody to challenge them it would take a better-than-hoped-for kind of season from new recruits.

For this weekend, there should be overtime in least one game. We should expect to see DeSerres/Lazaruk split the games in Calgary's end and Dubyk/Jensen to likewise for Manitoba. Otherwise, just too bad this is not on CanadaWest.tv.

These teams have the honour of opening the CIS regular season. MRU had a nice pre-season, beating Calgary and sweeping Lakehead. Still, they could finish anywhere from 4th to 7th. Lethbridge showed some signs of life last year. In fact, on the final weekend they swept MRU! I suspect they will win more games but still finish 8th. Their only pre-season wins were against Portage College from the ACAC.

The Battle of Banjoland! The age-old canine v feline rivalry will once again be fought out in a home-and-home hockey series. Both sides are perplexing. Sask looked really bad early on, the gathered steam after the mid-point. Just when they seemed ready to mount a challenge, they lost at home to UBC in the quarter-finals. After a prolonged period in the Saskatoon dog pound they emerged to win their pool at the University Cup and get to the final game. They look like they are not quite a contender, but will never be an easy mark either. They could finish anywhere from 2nd to 5th.

Meanwhile, Regina was very much in the thick of the playoff race to the end, only to be pipped by UBC at the finish line. They over-achieved in 2012-13 and perhaps they overdrew their karma account. They have had poor pre-season results. Still, anything from 5th to 7th is possible.

This is another semi-final rematch from a year ago. UBC are expected to have a large core of returnees. Will they be better just on that basis? Perhaps. But UBC usually find ways to disappoint. They would really love to make the Big Four in the CW a Big Five. They did beat Alberta in pre-season. That came right after Alberta lost to Augustana of the ACAC. The Monkeys rallied to win 4 straight, two of those in OT. This was not a typical pre-season for the Monkeys. I don't think they will repeat last year's record, but even finishing 2nd would be a surprise. As for UBC, I will still them as a #4 to #7 team until they show otherwise.

Thursday night games in university hockey always seem strange to me. But what the heck, it allowed two lesser publicized teams to take the limelight.

MRU scored the only goal of the 1st period and the lead held through two periods. Despite trailing heading into the 3rd period, the H0rny Ones were outshot 19-10 in the 3rd period, and surrendered another goal. Connor Collett (a rookie) and Matthew Brown (a vet) had the goals. Dalyn Flette had 29 stops for the shut-out. Ketlo and Tait are once again the goaltending tandem in Lethbridge.

Sept 26: Bisons Beaten in Bedrock

This is a funny weekend in the CW. The 6 schools with football teams are also meeting each other in the hockey openers. On Friday, the Dinos edged the Bisons 42-41 on a last second field goal miss by the Bisons. Meanwhile, just a stagecoach ride away, the Dinos claimed a comfortable hockey victory. The Dinos scored 2 goals per period on just 31 shots ob Devan Dubyk. The Bisons managed just one goal (from rookie Chad Robinson) from17 shots on Kris Lazaruk.

The big diffrence in the game was that Calgary went 3-for-4 on the powerplay, whilst the Bisons were blanked.

I will be interested to see if the Bisons will make any line-up changes for Saturday's rematch, which goes at 7:00 CDT. Live Stats for all CW games are at http://www.leaguestat.com/canadawest/mens/en/stats/schedule.php.

The football game between these two banjo-oriented schools goes Saturday afternoon in Regina. The hockey series was in Saskatown on Friday. The teams then piled into a tractor for the ride to Regina for Saturday's rematch. These things are now possible in Saskatchewan since half the road from Saskatown to Regina is now paved. That's progress!

On the ice, Regina dominated the shot clock but Ryan Holfeld stymied them in the Mutts' goal with a 34 save shutout. It is hard for me to get a gauge on these two teams. Sask already has pre-season losses to Alberta, Calgary, and Manitoba and Regina was winless against the CW.

One weakness with the redesigned CW website is that they do not have quick-and-easy links to audio or video. I believe this game will be on CanadaWest.tv at 7:00 CST or 8:00 CDT.

After a pre-season where they were monkeying around, everybody was keen to see what the Primates would look like once the season started. Well, they looked like a strong team, but not the juggernaut that won the U-Cup last year. While I still expect them to finish 1st, I believe that the gap between them and the middle of the pack will be greatly reduced.

UBC looked pretty good. After two periods the score was 2-2 and UBC held a 27-21 lead of the shot clock. Although Saudi Alberta scored the only goal in the 3rd, they were all over UBC, outshooting them 17-4. Kurtis Mu-u-ucha got the win and Matt Hewitt was tagged with the loss.

This was not a good start to the regular season for the Herd. Calgary's game stories have video clips of the goals. Although the Bison offence sputtered, with just 2 goals on the weekend, the goaltending did not start out very well. Both sides rotated goaltenders. The Bisons went with Brendan Jensen and the Dinos started Jacob DeSerres. However, since both posted shut-outs last weekend I will not be screaming from a rooftop today.

It appears that the defence pairs were Gow-Paulsen (-2), Bresciani-Elmes (-1), and Sutherland-Hunter (0). Christensen and Rous were scratched.

If I had to guess on the forward lines I would say:

Next week the Bisons will host Regina Friday at 7:00 and Saturday at 1:00. Calgary goes home-and-home against cross-town rivals MRU.

The H0rny Ones appeared to be pumped with Viagra when this game started. They amassed a 2-0 lead after the first period. But then the Blue Cats outshot them 43-17 over the final two periods whilst scoring 7 unanswered goals. Only one player scored twice, Matthew Brown of MRU, and one of those was on a penalty shot. Next weekend Lethbridge has to visit Alberta. Not a great way to break a slump.

The Regina leg of the Cats v Dogs battle resulted in a sweep for the Mutts. The funny thing is that Regina went with Lucas Gore in goal for both games (they usually rotated last year) and Sask switched to newcomer Jordon Cooke (after riding Ryan Holfeld last season). Still, Sask got superior goaltending yet again. Regina outshot Sask 33-19. The game was tied 2-2 heading into the 3rd period, and Sask scored twice on only 6 shots.

My suspicions about a downturn for the Evil Monkeys may be coming true. They hav e been spotty to say the least throughout the pre-season. The shots were even at 23-23, yet Luke Siemens allowed 5 goals. Next weekends trip to Saskatown could land UBC in a nice spot in the earky season.

At last! The Bisons are due to play on home ice. After 6 exhibition games and two regular season games on the road, we finally get to see the new-look squad. There are 13 new players and 5 2nd year players on the U of M roster.

Both teams went 0-2 last weekend and need to do something this weekend. In the pre-season, Regina's only wins were over ACAC teams. They went 0-3 in a European tour and then lost to Sask, Calgary, and Alberta. Despite being swept against Sask last weekend, they did have a big edge on the shot clock. They have returned all 3 goaltenders from last year, and Lucas Gore started both games last week. They also list 23 returnees amongst 29 names on their overall roster.

Two years ago the Kittens were thought to be a doormat but surprised everyone by claiming a playoff berth. They were roughed up badly by the Bisons that year in 8 of their 9 meetings (including pre-season and playoffs). But last year was different. Regina and Manitoba were in the middle blob of teams competing for 3rd-7th places. I thought the Regina record was somewhat of an illusion, since they were outscored 99-70 on the season.

In any event, the Bisons lost 4 games to the Kittens, once in OT. The Bison low point of 2013-14 occurred after the first Regina series, when they fell to 2-7-1. Between their two Regina series, the team rallied to go 7-3-2 with one series against every other team in the league. With a climb to .500 in sight they inexplicably lost twice to a Regina team that otherwise closed the season 0-7-2 to miss the playoffs. As late as January 3rd, Regina was 9-8-0 and flirting with 3rd place.

Also, the Bisons are off to Grand Forks to face UND Sunday night. I don't like to see them travelling to play 3-in-3.

This is a quarter-final rematch. Last year UBC got the 6th and final playoff berth on a tie-breaker over Regina and then knocked out the Banjo-Mutts. The Mutts still had a host's berth in the nationals to fall back on, and got to the final. In the end, both of these teams were eliminated by the Evil Monkeys.

Sask relied on goaltending to edge Regina twice last weekend, whilst UBC split with the Monkeys.

In the pre-season Sask was pretty middle-of-the-road, with wins over Regina and Lethbridge, a loss to Calgary, and OTLs to Manitoba and Alberta. UBC had three tight games against CW teams, beating Alberta and Lethbridge and losing to Calgary. They also dusted off the SFU Clown.

This is likely a crucial match-up of CW middle-powers in the race for 3rd-7th once again. The series should tell us lots about both sides.

This crosstown match-up has always been hard on the Dinos. In rivalry games the underdog usually has their best game of the season. This year, though, MRU is off to a good start. True, they have only two regular season wins, and those are against Lethbridge. But they also rolled 5-0-0 through the pre-season. Perhaps one can discount those as an opening win against rival Calgary, and sweeps of non-CW teams (NAIT from the ACAC and Lakehead of the OUA). I guess we'll find out soon. Calgary have had a decent pre-season and then rolled over the Bisons last week. With the Monkeys stumbling, Calgary will be targetting first place this year.

Last year Saudi Alberta went 45-4-1. They are now 5-4-0. I don't see them going 40-0-1 in their next 41 games. They have returned a lot of players (20 out of 28 on their LeagueStat roster). Is it OK to cheer while a herd of Bison trample to death some little kittens? Well, that's what happened Friday night at the Wayne Fleming Arena. The crowd was very boisterous and seemed much larger than the announced 250. There were two bands (the Engineering Symonized Marching Band and a bunch in buffalo hats) and a DJ booth. The downside was that the beer line-ups were quite long at all times.

The motif of the evening was "goals scored after several nice passes". The Herd chased out Regina's starting goaltender Lucas Gore after the first period. He gave up 3 goals on 9 shots, but every one was a nice tic-tac-toe passing play. One goal was waived off and anher breakaway was stymied. Lewadniuk, DePape, and Sutherland scored in the 1st period. Merasty, Rous, and Bruyere scored in the 3rd.

The new Bisons were shining, especially Shaq Merasty. He is a 6'4" sniper with skill and a mean streak. He will rack up some goals this year. The top two lines dominated every shift they played. The 3rd and 4th lines had loads of ice time in the 2nd and especially 3rd periods and generated more chances than they surrendered. Dubyk looked good in goal. I am not sure I like the Gow-Paulsen pairing on D. We'll see.

The three stars were Dubyk, Paradis, and Merasty.

The rematch goes Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and can be seen on CanadaWest.tv.

MRU keeps rolling along. The Dinos' record against Calgary-based teams is not good so far. In pre-season they lost to MRU and the Flames. In this game Dalyn Flette stopped 38 of 39 shots to lead the way. MRU is now 3-0 in the regular season and 8-0 overall.

The Bisons completed their sweep of the Banjo-Cats with a decisive matinee victory. The Herd made one line-up change (Christensen for Rous on defence) and came within a few minutes of a complete weekend shutout.

Regina made two line-up changes and went with 7 defencemen and 11 forwards.

The Bison defence gave Regina very few scoring chances at all. Most shots were a one-and-done scenario. The only Kitten goal of the weekend was scored with just over 4 minutes left on a kind of play out of nowhere.

Jordan DePape scored the first goal after 4 minutes of play. The rest pf the period was not as chaotic as Friday's opening frame. However, Regina tallied only 6 shots and seldom had control of the puck on the Bison end.

In the 2nd period the Bisons scored twice in just over a minute to assume control of the game. Merasty and Dickin tallied to give each member of their line a goal. From that point on there was very little offence. The Bisons were quite content to control the puck and territory and Regina seemed powerless to stop them. There were precious few shots on goal the rest of the way. In fact, despite being down 3 goals headed into the 3rd period, the Kittens recorded only 5 shots in the final frame. DePape's empyy-netter closed the scoring.

The three stars were DePape, Merasty, and Dickin.

Next weekend the Bisons are off to visit the canine Saskatchewanites. Their next home games are October 17-18 against Mount Royal.

Rookie goaltender Jordan Cooke made 36 saves to lead the Banjo Mutts to a win over UBC. For the first time this season, the Mutts outshot their opponent. They built a 2-0 lead through two periods while bombarding UBC with 34 shots. It was only UBC's 3rd period of comeback attempt that made the final shot totals close. UBC also failed to score in 6 powerplay opportunities, whilst Sask went 2-for-4.

UBC is now 1-2-1 and Sask is 4-0-0. Both sides are at home next weekend, with UBC facing surprising Mount Royal and Sask hosts the Bisons.

The Evil Monkeys had a big lead in shots throughout the game, yet trailed 3-2 after two periods. A five goal outburst in the 3rd ensured they would not be embarrassed by the H0rny Ones. The final shots were 56-27!

The Monkeys are now 3-1-0, and face lowly Regina next. Lethbridge is 0-4-0 and will go home-and-home with Calgary.

MRU's 5-0-0 pre-season was perhaps given little notice because only one game (against Bedrock U) was against a CW team. Then they swept the H0rny Ones. Well, so does almost everybody. But a sweep of Bedrock U should make CIS fans nation-wide go "hmmmm".

The Dinos trailed 1-0 after the 1st and threw everything they had at goaltender Dalyn Flette in the 2nd. However, the period remained scoreless despite a 16-4 edge in shots in favour of Bedrock U. In the end, the Dinos outshot the New-Kittens-on-the-Block 35-20 but just could not score.

I suspect we'll see MRU in a close-fought series out in British California next weekend.

The Bisons headed south of the border to play a 3rd game in 3 nights against the No-Longer-Fighting-Sioux. Due to NCAA regulations, they had to drop their nickname and have thus far not "named" a replacement. I have suggested "Fighting Farmers", so as to preserve the original motif. I even found an actual logo!

Personally, I see no reason to continue these games. It might be fun for the Bisons to visit the land of cheap booze, and play in front of 10,000 plus. But they never give a proper account of themselves because the games are almost always 3 games in 3 days. One year, they played Friday and Saturday in Regina and travelled to Grand Forks from there. Don't forget: UND were beaten by UBC last holiday season in their only trip to Canada in the last umpteen years. That's right, 6th place freakin' UBC! They also had some trouble with Simon Fraser of the BCIHL. IMO this means that we won't see UND visit Canada for another 20 years or so.

Anyhow, the Bisons were allowed to dress an overstocked roster and used that to give all 3 goaltenders one period each. Dubyk and Jansen each gave up one goal and Spriggs gave up two (scored less than a minute apart). The on-line radio announcers acknowledged that the Bisons were slowing down as fatigue built up.

On paper, this stands to be a good matchup. A year ago the Mutts closed strong to claim 3rd place in the CW, whilst the Bisons rallied to claim 4th. In the playoffs, though, UBC sent the Mutts to the doghouse and the Bisons beat MRU before being eliminated in OT by Bedrock U.

Sask had a so-so pre-season. They beat the Banjo-Cats and H0rny Ones, had OTLs against Alberta and Manitoba, and lost to Calgary. They have started 4-0-0 against Regina and UBC. However they could have lost 3 of those games if not for superlative goaltending. 5th year Ryan Holfeld (.983) and rookie Jordon Cooke (.971) have each had two teriffic starts and one shut-out.

The Bisons have blended into their line-up a host of new players and so far, so good. They dominated Regina, whereas Sask was outshot (twice) by their banjo-luvin brethren. In their only CW roadtrip so far, though, the Bisons were swept by Bedrock U. Could they improve on that this time? Well, the Bisons have done better in the Rutherdump than they used to. The Mutts of old had big teams, but lately the Bisons have been bigger. And that is key in a compact relic like the Rutherdump. Assuming, of course, it is not condemned before they drop the puck!

Lethbridge appeared more life-like than last season in the pre-season games. However they still lost every game they played against CW teams. I fully expect the H0rny Ones to rebound fron the pounding they took against the Evil Monkeys last weekend and put forth at least one good outing against Bedrock U. The Dinos will be feeling some heat after being swept by MRU last weekend. Only a sweep here would satisfy them. This is a home-and-home format.

There are two linked stories on Jordan DePape. He was named U of M maleathlete of the week. The Manitoban story talks about the shoulder injuries that damaged his junior career and his appearance at Jets rookie camp in 2011.

The New-Kittens-on-the-Block are the surprise team so far. However, in pre-season they had only one game against a CW team (Bedrock U) and their first series was against Lethbridge. Their sweep of Bedrock U is worth a lot, even though they often save their best performances for their cross-town rivals.

So where does this leave us? This is a series where MRU could show what they are made of. They were just ahead of UBC last year, and UBC have had a reasonable start in their own right. I strongly suspect a split.

The Monkeys are getting their soft touches all in one bunch, just like some nice ripe bananas. Regina never showed much last weekend against the Bisons, although they did put in a spirited fight in their prior series against Sask. The Kittens have only played one home game so far. Maybe some home-made possum shanks will get them going.

Interesting factoid about the Monkeys: Excluding games against Regina and Lethbridge they are 4-4-0 so far, and two of those wins were in OT. Yet they are ranked #1 in the CIS poll!

How does one make a trip to a backwoods outpost like Saskatown enjoyable? By laying a good ol' whuppin' on their mangy hockey team, that's how. And that's exactly what the Bisons did on Friday night.

The Mutts got off to a 1-0 lead in a 1st period where they held a 12-5 edge on the shot clock. The moonshine was a-flowin' and the shoeless fans were a square-dancin' until a last-minute goal by Aaron Lewadniuk (his 3rd) evened the scores.

The Bisons assumed control of the game and silenced the banjos in a 2nd period where they scored twice. D-man Luke Paulsen (with his 1st) and Shaq Merasty notched his 3rd in the period.

There was no 3rd period rally in sight for the Mangy Ones. Paulsen scored his second of the game to widen the lead and leave the Mutts whimpering at the back door.

Devan Dubyk once again started in the Bison goal whilst Ryan Holfeld had his usual Friday night start for the Mutts. After giving up 6 goals in his first start, Dubyk now has a 2.00 GAA and a .922 save %.

Of note, the Lewadniuk-Robinson-Merasty line was out for all 4 Bison goals. (Although Paradis was with them on one occasion.)

The result helped tighten the CW standings, and draws the Bisons (3-2-0) within 2 points of Sask, MRU, and Alberta, joint leaders at 4-1-0.

In a roster note, Darren Bestland was listed as #22 for the Bisons. Dustin Bruyere (#22 last weekend) wore #29. So that's one more vet on the blueline.

The CanadaWest.tv feed for this one was not coming through, although the Regina and UBC feeds were up and running. Hopefully, the Saturday night rematch (8:00 CDT) will be available.

The H0rny Ones ventured into the Town of Bedrock and were soundly beaten by the Dinos. The shots were 43-18. The Dinos are now 3-2-0 and tied with Manitoba. Lethbridge falls to 0-5-0, tied with Regina.

The return match on Saturday night will be in Lethbridge and is scheduled for CanadaWest.tv. I would not be surprised to see a tougher battle. Last January, Bedrock U won game one 14-2 and then needed OT to win game two.

The Banjo Cats did much better against the Evil Monkeys than they did against the Bisons last weekend. There were just over 3 minutes left in the game when the Apes took the lead on a TJ Foster goal. It was Mucha against Gore in the goals, which before tonight had been a Regina weakness. The Saturday night rematch is also scheduled for CanadaWest.tv.

A close loss is still a loss. Regina falls to 0-5-0 and even though unimpressive, the Monkeys are 4-1-0. They are fortunate they did not start the season against any of the "Big Four".

MRU suffered their first loss of the season out in British California. The final score was an empty-netter. From what I was able to see this was a very closely-contested game, as one would expect. Dalyn Flette was tagged with the loss, and Mark Hewitt claimed the W. UBC is now 2-2-1 and MRU is 4-1-0.

We will see if MRU's hot start was an illusion as time goes on, starting with the Saturday matinee rematch (2:00 PDT, 4:00 CDT), also available at CanadaWest.tv.
