2014 Buy Outs

Recommended Posts

The season is winding down, just the finals to go, for some of us the fun time is after July first when Free agency begins.

Compliance buyouts can occur any time 48 hours after the cup final and before June 30th. They are free to sign with anyone even before free agency begins. The free agent crop this year is kind of meh, some solid players, most with question marks, many who will be overpaid because of right time and right place. a list of this years most likely compliance buyout candidates who will supplement the free agent crop:

RJ Umberger is a potential buyout candidate if the Jackets feel he cannot be traded. Unhappy with diminished returns and Umberger unhappy with diminished ice time he could be paid off and sent packing.

Brad Richards is not a bad player he just is not performing up to his contract. With the length left on it the Rangers will seriously consider buying him out.

Mike Richards name keeps popping up in discussion out of LA as Lombardi has questioned his speed and his ability to keep up in a fast game.

Lots of guys like Ville Lieno, Marty Havlat, Ryan Malone, Brooks Laich, David Booth, and Rene Bourque, underachievers who signed long term deals based off one or two good years will likely be sent packing. Could be had on the cheap if anyone wants to take a chance.

Ondrej Pavelec keeps popping up in all of these conversations though the Jets GM says he is keeping him. Tyler Myers keeps popping up as well though i just cannot see it. He would have a solid trade value if the Sabres decided to move on from him. I keep reading Marian Hossa from uneducated folks who havent taken the time to see the hawks have used both of their buyouts already. He likely will be traded however to clear space to sign both Toews and Kane long term.

So in short, a couple of Richards and a bunch of low risk medium reward at best guys will be hitting the market early. Not a lot here.

A lot of these guys have one thing in common: $$$$

It seems there is a trend of guys who were signed for too much or for too long and are being let go (or at least talked about it). It shouldn't really be that surprising because some of the deals were thought to be too much when signed, but we're seeing the ramifications now. I'm curious to see if these players recognize they were overpaid and will accept less money (because some of them are definitely legit NHLers).

It's also interesting that 2 of the top 3 names being tossed around are currently in the Cup.

Let's continue this topic for general discussion of players being bought out by various teams and who might be interested in signing them as free agents.

According to TSN Canucks placed David Booth on waivers for purpose of being bought out $4.25cap hit for 2014-15 season.

According to TSN Sabres to buy out Ville Leino $4.5M for next 3 seasons - placed on waivers.

If Havlat isn't traded somehow, he will definitely be bought out. Doug Wilson said plain he would not be back this season.
1 more year at 5 million cap hit.

Other Sharks Buyout candidates are Kennedy 2.35 mil , Burish 1.8 mil and Stuart 3.5 mil. Stuart might retain some trade value to a team looking for a veteran defenseman, but when Wilson said he wanted guys who want to play here, not just live here, Brad Stuart was the guy everyone looked at since he left detroit to live in California closer to his family. he has a limited NTC and can tell us 7 teams he would not like to go to.

I hope to god all 4 are somehow gone. That's over 10 million in worthless healthy scratches

Goodbye worthless players.

Niemi I cannot see being bought out because he definitely can be traded. Any team who wants a guy who is a huge momentum killer due to his liability and inability to make routine saves, have a crappy glove hand, blocker side(in fact, any puck 18 inches off the ice is a true danger of going in), bad lateral movement, and bad rebound control....An illustration of where goals were scored against him this past season.

Edit: Oh, and almost forgot. He plays the puck like it is a bouncing grenade. Sharks fans everywhere break out in sweat every time he leaves te net to play the puck. He usually manages to give it to whoever the closest opposing player is
Ville Leino.....talk about parlaying one decent NHL season into a big $ contract and falling off the face of the earth.

3 seasons in Buffalo, 137 GP, 10G/46A minus 18.....last year 58GP 0G/15A minus 16. Benched down the stretch on worst team in the NHL

I'm sure somebody will be interested, can't imagine who though

David Booth bought out by the Canucks. One of the flakier players in the game, a fun guy to listen to when he is interviewed, injuries have robbed him of his career. On the right low risk high reward the Michigan native would be a good signing by the Wings.

Aaron Rome bought out by the Stars. Keep moving, nothing to see here.

Ville Leino bought out by the Sabres which has been a foregone conclusion for awhile. As to who would consider him, umm, he was benched by the worst team in the game down the stretch to get ice time for non entities such as Nicolas Deslauriers, Luke Adam and Zenon Konopka. As to where Leino winds up, Europe bound. I cannot see anyone in the NHL who thinks this guy is a good idea.

I think if Kennedy gets bought out its under the rules that leaves a cap hit for it since he was signed AFTER the current labor agreement. Not 100% sure though.

Add Christian Ehroff to the list. This moves comes to me as a bit of a surprise but I guess having 7 years left at 31 was the main reason the Sabres are willing to cut the ties.

Ehroff is going to be a FA good pickup.
