yave1964
Marek Zidlicky resigned for a simple one year 4 million dollar deal with the New Jersey Devils thinning out an already thin bunch of defenseman in this years free agent class. Zidlicky who counts teammate Patrik Elias as his closest friend in the game will stay with New Jersey where he put up 42 points good for 20th among all defenseman in the league. He led the team in power play points. He stated earlier in the year that he hoped to resign with New Jersey especially if they brought fellow Czech Jaramir Jagr back. The Devils are quietly locking up their key components for next year. The fact that they have moved no closer to resigning Marty Brodeur speaks volumes after the way they have under the radar resigned both Jagr and Zidlicky. MadDevil
Glad Zids will be back for another season, although I do wonder how Lou is going to clear the logjam they have on defense. Greene, Zidlicky, Volchenkov, Salvador, and Harrold are all signed for next year. Fayne, who is UFA, should get signed. And then you've got the kids. Larsson and Gelinas won't be exempt from waivers next year, and really have nothing left to prove in the AHL. Merrill is the one who could be sent down, but the coaching staff really likes him. So that's 9 bodies to fill out 6 roster spots. I hope the plan isn't to just let Fayne walk to clear a spot, while keeping the inept pylon that is Salvador, and the overpaid Volchenkov (I do still like him, but his contract is hideous). I was hoping the Wings could sign Zidlicky, if they lose out on Boyle. He is an under the radar solid offensive minded d-man. I think he took less money to stay in New Jersey with Jagr and Elias, and quite frankly I respect that. Too many players it is all about the biggest bucks, Zidlicky accepting a one year deal at 4 million bucks, while certainly not chicken feed is equally certain less than he could have made on the open market. Good on him.
