i don't think it's fair to add Lauridsen to this group.

He is the project's project.  I hope he works out but Morin is a better version of Lauridsen already.

Now if you're looking for a big ,smart player that seems to be improving why not include Mark Alt ...

I will be surprised if the big Dane becomes an NHL regular especially if he fails to make the team during this year's camp.

A fair point.  I was thinking about Oliver more as a 6th d-man... and even that's not set in stone by any means.  He has the right tools, but that may not be enough.  We'll see.

Lauridsen finds some much needed offense during the pre-season, which combined with some hard hitting and snarl give him a roster spot. Injuries capapault him into the top 4, where he stays for the next decade.....YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST!!!!!!!!!!

@JackStraw   No way!!!  Oliver over Alt all day!!  Although I must say, I've only seen Alt play a couple times, and was not really focusing on him.....so my take has a grain of salt mixed in!

Do you have ancestral ties to Denmark or something? Or do you just like enormous dogs?

I will get laughed at for this, but I *guarantee* Lauridsen becomes an NHL regular.

His game reminds me a lot of Cody Franson's really....in the 15 games i seen of him. Nothing earth shattering but certainly just as good as him.

I was reading comments,on the TSN site about the DZ trade and the consensus is,he the softest "D" man in the NHL. Any truth to this ugly rumor ?

Surely not. That honor goes to Matt Carle, as half of this board will tell you.

Not sure about that 78 hits in 67 games isn't to bad.

Streit in 62 games only had 41.

Amac in 82 games only had 69.

Coburn in 82 games only had 109.

So i certainly wouldn't call that the softest in the NHL hell that isn't even the softest on his team..........that honor goes to the 5.25mill dollar man Streit!!!!!

Not that hit qualify or not to being soft just use that as an example.

One more reason to give Ollie a real shot at becoming an NHL defense man here on the Flyer's defensive weenie parade. I'm sure Mason would appreciate it.

I like Ollie's size as much as the next guy but I'd like to see more evidence that he can skate before I move him up the depth chart. As it is, I think he will be quickly surpassed by others. I even think another late pick  - Vasiliev - could do so. I'd like to see another Yuskevich on the Flyers.

I think Oliver skates very well for a big man. Not stiff or overly upright like most 6'6 guys either. I think he has a 1-1.5 year window to prove himself at the NHL level before the waves of our other young d-men start rolling in.

Howdy:

In general--this is a transition year. We want Schenn to produce.  We hope (pray) that Mason's resurrection is for real. We expect the Berube System to work. And the band goes on.  As for MDZ--maybe we should get the folks in Vegas...or the bankrupt Revel...to put odds on return to form versus waiver.   This will be a season of trial and error in lines and God knows what else.

I actually think it will be fun to watch.  Expectations will be low.  Any wins will be a pleasure.  Seriously...I just don't know what we will get.  What I know is that the opening 10 games against top-tier teams will be test of ability and character.

Peace,

Howie

Don't get me wrong, I would like to see Oliver succeed, plus I thought he was good in his call up a couple of years ago.

The fact that he couldn't /didn't crack the lineup in a call up role last season makes me think he's a tye mcginn , erik gustaffsson type NHL tweener.

If he does make the NHL I hope he plays well for us.  I'm not holding my breath though.

I don't see Ollie being and everyday player for the Flyers... Personally, his skating is not going to get him more ice time and with a deeper crop of prospects it will be tough.

@PhilsFanDrew

i thought I read a thread on here recently about Maroon where posters were talking about his attitude and how it got him shipped out. That's just another example of a young player with talent, who got himslef ousted because he was a dipshit. Im worried that DZ has the same issue

Apples and oranges.   Maroon never proved himself to be an NHL caliber player before he got shipped out.   MDZ has had 2 good seasons and 2 down seasons at the NHL level.   Also there was an incident with Maroon that the organization kept pretty close to the vest and did not disclose that caused him to be dealt.  I don't think MDZ is a headcase like Maroon was for the Phantoms.   I just think he wasn't confident playing the way that Vigneault and Trotz wanted him to play.   He may have to learn to be more coachable and develop other skills but I don't think he met it with the same resistance that Maroon did while only being in the AHL.   Also sometimes a player needs to hit rock bottom or needs a change of scenary to "get it".   If Maroon stays in the organization and gets away with his antics he probably doesn't develop into an NHL player.

Yeah, but he has always had NHL hands and scoring ability. With his 6'5 frame, the whole freak out thing on his coach (who, upon further review seemed to deserve it) was quite unfortunate.
