Seravalli tweets, "Flyers announce free agent signee Ryan White had surgery yesterday to repair torn left pectoral muscle. No timetable. He's on a 2-way deal." Educated minds had him pegged as our fourth centerman going into the season. But a torn pectoral muscle sounds serious. We're getting close to camp, so hopefully he heals up.

WHITE SHELVED WITH TORN PECTORAL

Signed by the Philadelphia Flyers to a one-year, two-way contract earlier this month, center Ryan White while have to wait to get his 2014-15 season underway. Yesterday, the Flyers announced that White underwent surgery to repair a torn left pectoral suffered in a workout last week. There is no current timetable for his return.

The gritty 26-year-old White has played 141 games in the NHL for the Montreal Canadiens. Philadelphia signed him as an unrestricted free agent on Aug. 7 to compete in training camp for a fourth-line spot with the team.

There is no guarantee of an NHL roster spot for White, which is why the contract is a two-way deal. The injury setback increases the likelihood that he will be assigned to the AHL's Lehigh Valley Phantoms when his season eventually gets underway.

Now that's frustrating...did the Flyers know about this before he signed? ( my bad I dd did not see the line where he did this last week while training) He is done for at least 1/2 the season. http://www.ncbi.nlm....88/#!po=39.2857

No lifting greater than 50% of the athlete's previous 1 repetition maximum should be performed until 6 months after surgery. Additionally, the use of heavy weighted pec dec and flys should be avoided for up to 6 months after surgery due to abnormally large amounts of stress to the pectoralis major

6 months from today puts us in the month of February. Then to add in conditioning and getting back into game shape....He may be done for the season.  I loved the signing at the time it occurred, but this wastes a contract if the Flyers brass knew about the injury. (see my comment above.. I missed the part where he did this last week while working out)

If he suffered it last week, it would be after he signed. Still a frustrating situation though.

I wouldn't think this effects Laughton. You don't want him playing 5-7 minutes a game on a 4th line. It probably opens things up a bit more for a guy like Bellamere.

Yeah fair point. People are forgetting about Bellemare. I've been reading up on him as a potential pick in the upcoming draft for my keeper league. Here's what Red Line said about him, ranking him 6th among available European free agents:

Offensively skilled, can play either on the wing or at centre. Has good size and plays a very up-tempo game. Can stick handle and control the puck in traffic. Natural sniper scored 20 goals on strong club in the Swedish League, then added 9-5-14 in 14 playoff games. Was stellar for France in their surprising World Championships showing. Finds open space well and always works hard. Shows good hockey sense in all three zones. A good penalty killer.

Not much to not like there eh?

But a torn pectoral muscle sounds serious.

I think it matters most where it was torn at.

If it was in the center where it connects to the sternum that is most serious if it is a tear near the armpit/arm connective tissue area that is less severe.....from my knowledge of those injuries.

But i'm no doctor.....but i did stay at a a Holiday Inn last night.

Yes from all the video of him i've seen he has very good speed. And a very sweet release. I think his upside offensively maybe much higher than Raffl's even.

...hey and Berube and gand could use this in the shootout too.

Agreed.

Yeah, love the speed. But also the versatility, which I find to be an increasingly valuable trait in a player, especially over the course of a season with injuries etc. PEB can kill penalties too, which is nice and he's played pro, albeit not in the NHL. He could find himself on a line with Cooter and Read easily.

Of course, he could also become the next Jiri Dopita....

@Podein25   Bellemere could be anything from a 20 goal guy to a outright waste of time. My gut tells me the skating is for real though, which along with his versatility makes him very interesting. He could be the big story coming out of training camp. Every year, you need somebody to step up from an unexpected source, he could just be that guy for the Flyers, at least I'm hoping.

The White injury is a real bummer, I've often thought of him as playing Flyerhockey.....so I loved the idea of him being in the O&B. Not the end of the world, it allows someone else to step up.....and, we know what White provides, so he could be a nice depth addition in the 2nd half should the inevitable injuries (is this McCrossin's 40th year?????) creep in. Nice to have sitting in your back pocket anyways.

I've said this before: PEB didn't sign an NHL contract to ride the bus in the AHL - he's gonna leave it all on the ice in camp. Enough to get a look at least. Then we'll see what he's made of.

Yeah too bad about White. But he'd be a great addition down the stretch and into the playoffs.

I think his injury does give Laughton a better shot.

Tons of variables at work here, but in the end, we are only 5-6 deep at center, so when one of those guys goes down, it can only help Laughton. I'm leaning more and more towards sticking VLC on the 4th line and praying somehow the round peg in the square hole works. That sets up Laughton for the 3rd line role and more playing time AND bumps up Cooter to the 2nd line....I know I've seen you post the same scenario and I think that is really a *perfect* way to get the most out of our talent. Cooter has loads of untapped offensive potential, they  should do everything possible to get that talent to the forefront...sooner the better. I really think he has a vastly underrated release and I know he has the instinct necessary for point production. He is ready for the next step.

then the question becomes, will the Flyers (Berube) have the balls to stick Vinny on the 4th line? It's one thing to try it out his first year in the O&B, it's another to assign him the 4th line out of camp. 5-7 minutes a night...$4.5 million... I just can't see the Flyers going that route.

Couturier is another tricky piece of the puzzle. I read they want him more offensively active but his starts were way more often in the D zone. I hope they're serious - I'd love to see him handle the puck more in general.

Greetings:

I read this thread and it confirms why I posted about the up- or downside of this squad by Turkey Day as the great question...that nobody can really answer. It is hard for me to figure where we head.  In reality, we could have a split season.  The first forty games will be so-so with lots of line juggling.  Perhaps the second half will actually show a lot of potential for next year.  It is typical Flyers hockey that the injury bug hits before the first pre-season puck is dropped!

Best,

Howie

  • 4 weeks later...

@OccamsRazor

it was old news with no time frame given.  Bill just updated with a time frame.  that is the only reason I reposted.

Ok i thought it was a time frame maybe it was just an estimated guess then i remember either way i knew it would be close to 6 months. They'll be fine they are deep at center.
