Why?

Well, you know what you're getting at least, which is more than you can say for some contracts these days. It does suggest that Zac is doing all the right things as far as off season prep etc goes

AWESOME news. Why...cause no one else on our present roster can knock out a d-man with a crunching body check. We need the skill set he brings. We lost a TON of push back when Hartnell left, the Flyers minus Zac would be tediously close to a ***** squad.

I just wish he was a better hockey player, i like what he brings physically with the hitting and willingness to do whatever, that is admirable.  what i'd love from him is a modicum of skill, to be able to make crisp pass to a linemate on the move, take a puck on the move on his backhand, make a move with the puck so his speed can be of use.

He is physically fast but his limited skill keeps him from "playing fast".

If the money is right i don't have a "real'" problem with his signing,  I do like him as a player, i would just like him to be more skilled.

Perhaps the Flyers are hoping Rinaldo scores about 15 goals the first half of the season, raising his value...

Flyers fans are a pretty hopeful bunch I guess, but I wouldn't say we are delusional. I mean, we're not exactly fooled by Santa Claus, for example.

I'm not upset with the move, assuming the price is right, but I'm a little puzzled as to why now. Why not wait a little and see how the season unfolds? Could they really have been worried that someone would extend Zac a juicy offer sheet in the offseason if they didn't get this done asap? This doesn't seem like a top priority and every contract you lock yourself into now gives you less flexibility down the road if other opportunities arise.

I like Rinaldo for his ability to generate energy with big hits and also draw penalties.  He scores a goal now and again, which is all I really expect from a 4th line energy player.  What I don't like is his overall hockey skill set and the fact that in order to be effective, he has to walk a very fine line between legal and illegal behavior.  When he is staying just on the right side of that line, he is a very effective player because he lays out some big hits, pisses off the opposition, and draws them into bad penalties.  But when he crosses the wrong side of the line, it can really be crippling to the team. You never want your team to be needlessly shorthanded due to a bone headed play, but that's what he does when he is having a bad night.

In general, I'm happy they extended him, but while I gave him a lot of slack last year, he is on a shorter leash with me this year!

I'm fine with the hitting (except for the occasional getting suspended part but whatever) but is it that hard to find a guy who can hit AND play a little hockey? And who has half a brain? I know other teams find those guys, because they always seem to score against the Flyers.

Great post Adams... Could not agree more.

The bad--he had 4 points last year, 153 PIMS and was suspended 4 games.

The good--it's a cheap contract for, IMO, a 4th line player

The best part--if he effs up, waive to Lehigh Valley and the entire contract can be buried. 925K in cap savings is max for a demoted player. I'm reading this deal is 850K for 2 years.

@DaGreatGazoo  That is a very reasonable contract. I was thinking TOPS 1.1 Mill per year, but anything under a mill, I'm quite happy with. I think he's worth that all day long. Sure, in a perfect world, he would have more skill, but until we find a mean SOB like him that can skate and provide skill from the 4th line (really, that *is* asking for a lot)....I'm good with Zac, easily one of my favourite Flyers.
