Irishjim Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 According to a report from Dave Isaac from the Courier Post, the Flyers have announced that Wayne Simmonds as their newest assistant captain. A fan favorite, Simmonds will help fill the void left by the long term injury to Kimmo Timonen and the trade of Scott Hartnell. full article and videos here: http://www.letsgoflyers.net/2014/09/18/simmonds-earns-a-leadership-role/

Podein25 Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Yup, good choice. For those keeping score at home, we've got "A" for "Assistant" and "V" for "Vomit."
pilldoc Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 LOL..., Vinny "the Vomit-man" Lecavalier. That shall be his new nickname - Vomitman!
AJgoal Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Good Choice. Are they going to keep on with more than two Alternates and rotate them in games? edit: cracked a joke. didn't like the tone.
Podein25 Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 @AJgoal Is your post a reference to "Alternate" vs "Assistant"? We never called them the former in Canada, at least not where I'm from. I always saw it as an American term. I might be wrong in that though.
AJgoal Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Yeah, hence eliminating the comment altogether (especially since it came out a bit condescending, which was unintended). It's the "official" NHL terminology, and I believe for the IIHF as well. But I think in most people's eyes the words are interchangeable. Anyways, it's really neither here nor there, and I don't want to derail a thread that should be congratulatory of Simmonds and discussing whether folks feel it's the right move.
Podein25 Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 I always thought the A= Alternate For me it was Assistant. Or Armadillo. Speaking of which, where is that armadillo-f**ker from New Mexico these days?

All is good.

murraycraven Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 About time.... Love Wayne and think he is a complete flyer.
Vanflyer Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 What's an Armadillo ??Agree With This Good eatin'!
flyercanuck Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Excellent choice. And we always called it assistant
Vanflyer Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Speaking of which, where is that armadillo-f**ker from New Mexico these days? Maybe he got arrested for pushing old ladies down escalators?
AlaskaFlyerFan Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Speaking of which, where is that armadillo-f**ker from New Mexico these days? For a second there I thought you were talking about me! I'm in north Mexico (Texas), not New Mexico!
Podein25 Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 For a second there I thought you were talking about me! I'm in north Mexico (Texas), not New Mexico!"North Mexico" is hilarious.
jammer2 Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 Mark me down for "assistant" also. What's not to love about this? Wayne is our backbone, our push back, he plays Flyer-hockey...nuff said!!
murraycraven Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 Who gets the next A? With both Kimmo and Hartnell gone there is another one up for grabs... Dare I say Streit?
King Knut Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 With Timmo and Scotty both out of the picture, isn't there another A to be bestowed? As much as everyone here hates him, doesn't it pretty much have to be Coburn at this point?According to a report from Dave Isaac from the Courier Post, the Flyers have announced that Wayne Simmonds as their newest assistant captain. King Knut Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 Announcers say that sometimes. Kinda the same difference in the parlance. If the captain is unable to perform his duties, They're allowed to bitch to the refs too. I always thought the A= Alternate

Careful... to some around here the mention of Coburn means war! I would be "okay" with it honestly but think Streit might be the better choice. Coburn has had more than his fair share of opportunities to be chosen by a Coach/Management. For whatever reason he has never been mentioned so not sure why it would change now.. Streit has experience and will be taking over Kimmo's spot as our top dman (like it or not). Will QB the PP and play a lot of minutes...
King Knut Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 Coburn was our top D man last year. He played the most and hardest minutes and shifts (followed by MacDonald - though obviously most of those were on the Island).Timmo (typically the minutes leader) was 4th among D men and 5th overall. Technically he may have been on the top pairing and he certainly played the PP a lot more, but in practice he wasn't really our #1 D man last year. I think you could say it was more or less a 3 or 4 man top D man situation last year with Coburn being the most relied upon. It'll be interesting to see what happens this year. I'd love to see one of the young guys get a chance, but Morin still needs to put on a few pounds I think and the others probably need a bit of work. Still... the chances are good we'll see them throughout the year because what team makes it through a full season with 6 x 82 game Defensemen? Careful... to some around here the mention of Coburn means war! I would be "okay" with it honestly but think Streit might be the better choice.
