Only one game into his new role as alternate captain, Wayne Simmonds earned himself a game misconduct penalty. He was ejected from yesterday's preseason match against the Maple Leafs after just straight up knocking out Korbinian Holzer early in the third period.(I guess a one punch knockout earns a game misconduct now...BullSH*T)

Did he get a two, five and ten? There was less than fifteen minutes to go I believe. Too subjective...

The Referee Association Against The Flyers Wives and Players pre season started training camp as well.

Yah.. didn't look like anything to get a 2,5 and 10 from. Did I miss something? I thought that was weird. Is there an automatic 10 for an instigation?

there is, but it looked to me like if anyone, the leaf started things.  only thing I can think is he was given an aggressor misconduct for continuing to throw after holzer was out.

Probably a little more to it, but from the looks of things, Simmonds got the gate for a combination of a few things:

1---It's preseason. Refs are gonna want to 'nip stuff in the bud' as early as possible and hopefully carry on over to the regular season what the 'law' is. Granted, they have been so inept in the past, that this is no guarantee they will be able to keep things under wraps later on in the season as easily.

2---Simmonds DID continue to throw haymakers well after Holzer was out on his feet and crumpling down. I will give Simmonds this: when in that situation, one is VERY emotional, and almost blind to anything else except the guy who just double arm grabbed you and tried rag dolling you...Simmonds of course, was not going to have any of it, took a swing, connected on the first well placed shot, but his emotions got the better of him, and probably before he even know he had Holzer out cold, just continued to flurry out of pure emotion.

Not an excuse for him, but just speculating on why he perhaps kept going after Holzer was basically a done deal after the first shot. Refs, of course, see that and will exert authority on what they see initially as a 'dangerous situation'...one in which Simmonds appeared to be out of control on.

3---Finally, reputation. Cmon, guys...we've all seen it. A guy like Simmonds can do the exact same 'overreactions' as, say, a guy who doesn't normally react or play like Simmonds does...let's say a Matt Read.  Read will get the benefit of the doubt in almost ALL such cases, Simmonds is a condemned man before the jury even checks in.

Fair? Of course not...but THAT has been hockey for decades now, and players who play with an edge like a Simmonds, like a Downie, like a Prust have to KNOW their style of play will be weighted against them regardless.

My final thought on this is....yes, it could have been a very dangerous situation for Holzer, but then (and who is this Holzer again???), players on the ice, especially relative newbies to the NHL, BEST be aware who they are going to put their hands on if they do indeed decide to go that route.

Holzer plays his own brand of physical hockey according to some bits I have read, but this is NOT a Euro league, this is not the AHL.....NHL has some guys who can play, but also the very best of the enforcer players are now more prevalent in the league...if he is going to go around putting his hands on someone, he better be aware of who it is, and better be ready to go right away!

As for Simmonds, he may want to check that temper.....because not only will the refs be watching him closely throughout the year, but other teams looking to bait Simmonds will be taking notes too.

Not saying Simmonds should change his play style (he is at the NHL BECAUSE of how he plays), but he may want to reign it in a times so as not to hurt his team when things really matter... I.E. regular season, and especially, playoffs.

I didn't think he deserved what he got, but its only preseason so I don't care. I just came here to say Korbinian Holzer.

Simmonds is not a GOON/ENFORCER. He is not the guy that the coach sends out to pummel  the other teams best players. The team wants him on the ice. He does the team no good in the box. He is a excellent hockey player who happens to be tough, really tough. If you go after him, he will respond. Let the aggressor beware. Recently I have heard talking heads lumping Simmonds in with the goons of the league. Now the refs single him out when he gets accosted, then fights, for extra punishment.

Is this really the new NHL?  I hope not.

I think they're one and the same. They havent made a sequel, and Korbinian is playing hockey....weird, huh?

According to BSH, Simmonds was ejected for breaking Rule 46.5, as follows:

Any player who persists in continuing or attempting to continue a fight or altercation after he has been ordered by the Referee to stop, or who resists a Linesman in the discharge of his duties shall, at the discretion of the Referee, incur a misconduct or game misconduct penalty in addition to any penalties imposed.

The refs failed to blow the whistle for the offsides soon enough!

Simmonds may not be a "goon" in the traditional sense of the word (I.E...a no-talent, heavyweight pair of fists attached to a body on skates who thinks a one-timer is someone who cheated on their wife JUST that one time), but Simmonds, IMO, is most DEFINITELY an enforcer. Goon and enforcer, though sometimes going together, is not necessarily the same thing.

The new NHL has enforcer players...Brandon Prust, Wayne Simmonds, Ryan Malone (before the snow lines...) for example...guys who can play the game, yet stick up for themselves, their teammates, and keep the agitators in line.

I agree Wayne Simmonds is more valuable when he is playing the game rather than being a cement head, but his skill is mixed in with his aggressive nature (and sometimes that DOES mean he will engage in a bit of goonery), the refs KNOW this, and thus, due to the way he plays (no quarter asked, none given) he will be one of the first players looked at when altercations arise on the ice....fair or no, that is the way it is.

If a guy like Marty St. Louis all of a sudden developed a mean streak to his game and he went around like a bowling ball going out of his way to hit, agitate, or otherwise play some NON hockey (despite the fact he is obviously a skilled player and NOT a goon), and he started doing it pretty regularly, he too would be looked at closely for extracurricular activity and not be given a long leash at all in today's NHL either.

Remember...I did say it wasn't really fair to auto assume Simmonds will stoop to goonery, but the fact remains, he IS an aggressive player, he PLAYS that way many times, and really, it is his bread n butter, along with his skill as a hockey player, so naturally the refs will look at him more closely than some other players.

Throw in a situation like the video shows, and if Simmonds did indeed not heed the refs initial warnings, well, then, there ya go...the gate is the result.

I disagree. When one thinks of goons / enforcers in the league....Simmonds name is not a name that rolls off your lips. Will he play tough and defend himself and stick up for his teammates. Absolutely. By your definition Hartnell would be lumped as a goon.

Goons by the traditional sense are looking to even a score. Hartnell and Simmonds do not. Rinaldo is the type of player a coach puts on the ice to even a score. Simmonds is not that type of player. I don't buy this non- traditional goon theory. You are either goon/fighter or not. Just because a player plays tough and will stand up for himself does not equate to goonery. Please show me on a consistent basis where Simmonds has acted as goon. He plays tough. Period. End of story. He is strictly a hard nose player who has skill. Sorry, but I strongly disagree with your assessment of Simmonds. Finally this is hockey where emotions run high. At one time or another all players sometime in their career, if provoked in the right way, will show a side of goonery. That doesn't mean they are goons or should be lumped with those types of players.

Sorry, folks...kid got his mitts up on Simmonds, and wasn't ready to answer the bell.  Did Simmonds throw a quick/early one...yup.  But if you don't want the bull, don't grab the horns, or something like that.

I hope Wayne kicks his ass again tonight.

If you knock him out, stop throwing punches.

One, maybe you didn't notice, but more than that and you probable deserve a misconduct.

That said, this bull Shiite about Simmons being an enforcer is bunk.

Since when is a guy who can defend himself and stand up for his teammates an enforcer? That's just a hockey player.

Simmonds can throw 'em, but I think in most cases the guy would probably prefer to just play the game.

Not sure I feel right about these "watch that temper" comments either. He can be an aggressive player, but he's never struck me as a guy who loses control. He was even in control after the banana incident and let me tell you, I for one was NOT in control at that point and had I been there I would have probably spent the night in jail.

Wayne did something he shouldn't have done. It's not all his fault. He's not Darcy Tucker (he'd kill Darxy Tucker btw) who it bunk did crap like this all the time and got away with it - not JUST like this because Rucker couldn't knock a guy out with his fists for anything) but other crap like this.

That ain't Wayne. This isn't a thing.

I thought in the replay he looked like he got hit but fell/slipt, because right after he was jawing at Simmy and he was up and coherent right away, it didn't look like his marbles were rolling around.

Wayne plays Flyers hockey that's all...

Recently I have heard talking heads Penguin fans lumping Simmonds in with the goons of the league (Malkin, Cooke, etc).

Sorry, I could not resist and its all in jest and fun.
