Rob Zepp

The game was not televised last night, so I can only take Meltzer's word that Zepp was outstanding. I watched the previous Flyers/Devils game where Zepp played the second half, and he looked solid there too.

All in all, that's a great sign for the Flyers if Emery is injured or has a subpar year. Sounds like we might have a legitimate NHL backup in our system.

Here's Meltzer's write up on Zepp from last night:

Simply put, the Flyers failed to compete for two-plus periods. Many of the veteran regulars were among the biggest culprits. Energy and motivation were low, and the Flyers did a lot more standing around than skating. The result was a staggering 41-16 disparity in shots (35-7 through the first two periods) and a parade of Flyers to the penalty box on needless penalties.

The brightest spot for the Flyers on this night was veteran goaltender Rob Zepp. The longtime Eisbären Berlin netminder authored numerous 10-bell saves to keep the Flyers close when they had no business being in the game.

Veteran forward Scott Gomez scored two power play goals for New Jersey. The first came on a deflection of a Damien Brunner shot in the final half-minute of the opening period. He struck for his second tally at 3:02 of the second period, as Tuomo Ruutu beat defenseman Nick Schultz wide on the rush and there was no support on the other side as Ruutu fed the puck across to Gomez. Zepp had no chance on either goal.

I was really surprised to see Emery brought back, even as just a back up. If the rumbles I am hearing from training camp are true, he is already having problems and the season has yet to begin. There would be absolutely nothing wrong with a healthy Ray Emery but I think that is a thing of the past. Running with a guy like Zepp as the B/U would also give more playing time to Stolarz in the AHL which would be a good thing.

i wasn't surprised the Flyers brought him back bc the word was Mason really liked him and they were a good tandem. ...not a good sign Emery is already dealing with an injury. 'Good to hear Zepp stood out - all the writeups I saw say it could've easily been 6-1 or 7-1 last night.

Looks like the Flyers' veterans are picking up right where they left off last night tonight. ... coburn is asleep on his skates, Macdonald looks slower than ever and the Flyers' forwards should be wearing rangers' jerseys for all the help they're giving them, handing over the puck every other shift. sloppy game so far

Right now, I'm concerned our back up's side to side movement is the worst in the league. I expect lot's of quick cross ice passes to take advantage of this, as well as a ton of wrap around attempts.

I brought this up in the shoutbox last night.  Do you keep Zepp up and send Emery down.  Logic being:  Zepp is not waiver exempt, has had a good preseason and only makes 600K.  Emery is older, injured and costs $1 million, and is not waiver exempt.

It's quite possible neither gets claimed but if given the choices of someone going through waivers, I know who teams would probably jump on if they need a goalie.

@DaGreatGazoo   I'm not quite sure how the exact rule works, or even what is states, but I was under the impression that players in their ELC's can't get claimed?  I think that Zepp is on his ELC...not even sure about that though.

Zepp requires waivers. Stolarz won't.
