Projected final roster

Seravalli projects the final roster, and I think he's pretty bang on:

http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/sports/flyers/Projecting-Flyers-final-roster.html

Basically, it would shake out something like this:

Schenn/Giroux/Voracek

Read/Couturier/Simmonds

Umberger/Lecavalier/Raffl

Jones/Bellemare/Akeson

Rinaldo

Rosehill

Coburn/MacDudTM

Streit/Grossmann

Del Zotto/Schenn

Schultz

Mason

Emery

What do you guys think? There were never really any open roster spots other than 4th line forwards. I'd swap Akeson and Rinaldo based on the opposition. But that 4th line has some serious speed!

we don't need rosehill and shultz and their 8 minutes a season and macdud needs to be paired with shenn. that combo worked with coburn it clearly doesn't

Schultz is the kind of player I want in the 7th slot, though not the player. Cheap and not young so he's not going to get hurt in his development by sitting in the pressbox. Can play in a pinch for a game if you can't get a recall up fast enough. Same thing for Rosehill. Ideally, I'd prefer to lose Schultz, sit one of the vets, and let Alt get some time in the NHL to see if he swims, but that's just not going to happen.

I still don't like that 3rd line, though Lecavalier looked a bit better last night than I remember from last season.

I agree. I noticed that in a few games - Vinny looks a little quicker and a little more aware. Maybe he's extra motivated after being basically rejected by everyone all summer, including his own team.

It sure would be nice to have a 4th line that can actually play hockey.

It would be, but it would also be a luxury.  Not many teams have a 4th line that can play hockey.  The 4th line's job is to give some breather to the first three lines and make sure that no goals are scored against their team when they are on the ice for 30 seconds.

I would rather see Bellamere in VLC slot. But I guess when you are paying 4.5 million for a dud you have to play him somewhere above the 4th line.

And to those that say "nice to see a fourth line with scoring potential", the problem is that they only see 5-6 minutes a game. That two minutes a period or 4 shifts a period. That is why S. Laughton went to Lehigh (rightfully so).

Meltzer and Panaccio both mention the increasing possibility of Morin sticking around for 9 games to give him a real taste of NHL action, and also to serve as a measuring stick on how close/far he realistically is from regular NHL duty.

If that happens, the Flyers would have to carry 8 defensemen for the first 9 games. Del Zotto and Schultz would be the likely healthy scratches.

That means they could only carry 13 forwards, and one of Akeson, Bellemare, or Jones would have to go to the Phantoms until Morin (or at least one defenseman) is no longer on the active roster.

Based on play, I would say Akeson would get sent back - but both he and Jones would have to go through waivers. The Flyers wouldn't risk that. Bellemare is waiver exempt, and could be sent down now and recalled by game 10.

I'd love to see Morin in real game action. There's really no harm in keeping him around for 9 games.

Easy fix waive Schultz and Rosehill problem solved...noone will claim either of those bums and if they do....MEH!

Ha! Good point! I would definitely waive Rosehill - he really is a useless player to have around.

Schultz too, but I doubt they would do it.

That's true. Plus, with re-entry waivers gone, they'd only be exposed once, and no cap hit would be risked. I agree that is the way to go

Looking at that potential lineup, one concern that comes to mind is that (with the exception of Simmonds) it's not a forward group that looks "tough to play against." That's one area where we'll miss Hartnell for sure.

@Lucky13

yep not really living up to the broadstreet bullies moniker with that crew...

i'm on the fence about that too, i'd like these guys to skate and play with speed and toughness.  I guess you can be tough to play against and not be pugilistic,  contest every inch of ice, hit ,  be tenacious, this group can play that way, how long before they get hurt is a question i have.

the forward group isn't huge like LA or Boston that's for sure.

Wait, what? Who is huge on the kings roster? Kopitar is a large man, but he doesn't play like one. Jeff Carter is their second largest forward. As for the bruins, who is big other than lucic?

@aziz

D King, D Brown, J Stoll, K Clifford, the guys you mentioned. I consider those to be big guys...they play a heavy game anyway

With the Bruins I was including the departed Jerome Iginla when I was thinking about them...Thorton, Marchand , Campbell is regular sized but those guys play a heavy game too...I reckon I should have mentioned last years Pens they had more big guys than the Broons.

Ya, I wasn't really thinking just of outright size or fighting ability among the forwards...even just average-size guys who play a physical / gritty game. We're a bit short on them, I think. Cooter shows signs of a slight mean streak form time to time though, at least he doesn't let himself get pushed around. I wouldn't mind if the Chief encouraged him in that direction :D

I suppose B. Schenn could fall into this category, though I feel like some of his hits are so reckless he's just as likely to take himself out as the other guy. But even though he'll throw some big hits, I don't think he's the kind of guy who wears opponents down or gets under their skin constantly like a Hartnell or SImmonds.

I just hope they don't end up being an overall soft group, that's tough to watch as a Flyers fan :/

 I was gonna list King, Brown and Clifford also, not sure on Stoll, he plays a responsible game, not sure how tough he is, but I may be wrong.

 Tell me about it, it is just *wrong* to have a Flyer team with no balls!  We lost a lot of push back when we dealt Hartnell.  Simmonds is really the only regular who is legit tough. Giroux plays big for a little guy, and Cooter and Brayden at least shove back....but not a lot of toughness there. That's one of the reasons Rinaldo has to dress on most nights. Somebody has to stick up for the guys and play the game aggressive like it was meant to be played. I just don't want to dress Rosehill if it can be avoided. He's useless, brings nothing but his fists, despite this fastest player crock.

@JClarkCSN

Flyers have placed LW Jay Rosehill, G Rob Zepp, F Chris VandeVeldeon on waivers to send them to Phantoms

@brelic  Blair Jones is an interesting character. At 28, he's no spring chicken. He's played 128 NHL games in his career, scoring 7 goals in those contests. At 6'3 and 215 LBS, he skates well for a big man. Obviously a bottom 6 checking type. Very odd that a lackluster team like Flames cut him outright, but the Flyers have found a place for him and his strong work ethic....a nice story.

Agreed, I thought he looked good & definitely hard-working in preseason. He could also help bring some toughness, seemed to play a pretty physical game. I'll be pulling for him.
