pilldoc Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 I debated wheather to start t his topic thread or not, considering the vast majority have made their opinions on this topic known in other threads. However, since he is now the lone defensive prospect still on the roster...what the heck. Debate away. Here is a nice article I found regarding Morin. http://thehockeywriters.com/will-samuel-morin-crack-the-flyers-lineup/?utm_content=buffer1bf81&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer For the record, though my heart wants him with the Flyers....... I say you have to send him back to juniors for the final year. In a perfect world he would be with the Phantoms, but since his age does not permit that. Then give him a 9 game taste of the NHL and then send him back to his junior team. Next year will be a different story.
Samifan Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 I agree with the masses. Give him his 9 game look and send him back to juniors. The 9 games will give the Flyers an idea of what he needs to work on before then send him back.
Irishjim Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 I would play him all year ala cooter.. will grossmanN last all season (NO). they could roll 7 D men 2 games on 1 off keeping the old dudes fresh.. he'd get the minutes needed to develop.
radoran Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 I think they're looking to Gotstobehere/Hagg/etc. to be the callups in that role this season, Jim. They're rather overstocked with defencemen(!?!?) which is a nice place to be at this point. No need to burn a year off Morin's ELC and put him on the road to an early free agency.
Poulin20 Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 No need to burn a year off Morin's ELC and put him on the road to an early free agency. My thoughts exactly....lets just keep looking at Rad's signature line. "I’m not going to make a move because people in our building are getting antsy. I’m going to make a move because it’s the right move for this franchise, not only for today but for tomorrow." - Ron Hextall ..we have waited so long at this point I would rather wait a few more years doing it the right way than trying to cut corners and setting us back even more...
hf101 Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 I dunno, I'm not in the same mindset to send him to Juniors. The Flyers may likely be again a bubble team to make the playoffs. And we are not better defensively this season after losing Timonen and gaining Del Zotto. If Morin is a better d-man than both Del Zotto and Schultz right now, then I say give him a top 6 roster spot for the entire season. Have Del Zotto be the #7 d-man and place Schultz on waivers to send him down. My rational is why play the entire season without your best defensive top 6? Why wait? I could care less about the year on an entry level contract if it is going to be used all season. Keeping Morin also gives us more looks with Ghost called up and building this pair for the future.
radoran Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 I just don't agree he's better than Del Zotto and Schultz rightnow. And I don't agree that he's been better than, for example, Gotstobehere. If he was AHL eligible, he'd already have been sent down. IMO, the only reason he's still up is to get his cup of coffee and go back to Junior. If he had played his way onto the roster - as I'd argue Shayne did much more than he - there would be no question. But he hasn't.
hf101 Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 I'll agree with you that Ghost has been the best d-man in the preseason, but that isn't the question in this discussion. I think Ghost will play a number just shy of 40 games this season and playoffs with the Flyers. Just shy so if he needs to be with the Phantoms to start the season next year it can be an option. The bigger question here has Del Zotto and Schultz shown they belong on the Flyers over Morin? With Schultz I say absolutely no way. I'm not impressed. Are you convinced Del Zotto deserves a starting 6 roster spot? I'm not sure on that one to be honest. If it meant keeping Morin who would grow much faster day by day practicing and playing with the Flyers than he will in Juniors then I say Del Zotto can be that 7th guy. Does Schultz provide any value at all to the roster? IMO, Not really if you plan on calling up and playing Ghost as d-men are injured. I think there is also a decent possibility that Timonen returns to the Flyers for the post season as the roster expands. So what do we need Schultz for? I think we signed him for insurance assuming none of the young guys would be ready this season.
radoran Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 The main thing here is that while Schultz hasn't set the world on fire, neither, quite frankly, has Morin. He hasn't done anything to say that he definitely deserves to be on the roster, nor that what he would bring is worth giving up the year on the ELC and towards FA. If he had, the answer would be simple. As usual, I'm not convinced about most of the Flyers' blue line. But I'm more than convinced that Morin will benefit much more from another year of Junior (and maybe at least part of one in the A) than he would being thrown into a starting roster spot in the NHL.
mojo1917 Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 what's the @jammer2 line ?no kid has ever been harmed by spending an extra year in junior or the A Let him play big minutes , the point on the PP, work on his shot ...refine his offensive game this year.
Irishjim Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 For a moment, forget about whether or not Samuel Morin making the Flyers is or is not good for his development. He should make the team, if only in a paper transaction, because it makes salary cap sense. read full article here: http://www.broadstreethockey.com/2014/10/2/6892337/samuel-morin-flyers-roster-salary-cap
radoran Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 I will bet my bottom dollar that Morin is on the squad on Day 1 for his cup of coffee before being sent back down.
LegionOfDoom Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 After his 9th cup of coffee...bbback too the caave...Sam Morin, defensemen. A prospect barely around. We can rebuild him, We have the technology. We can make him better than he was. Better, stronger, faster.Ccchhh ccchhh ccchhh ccchhh ccchhh ccchhh ccchhh ccchhh.....
AJgoal Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 The author is making a fundamental error. The Flyers need only be at 4.9 over the cap, and can't have more than a 23 man roster. They need to put Pronger on LTIR. They do not need to do the same with Timonen.

AJgoal Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 Do I recall some discussions we've had on this same topic? Probably. The most financially sound move is to put Pronger on LTIR, keep Timonen and White on the active roster day 1, then place Timonen and White on LTIR after day 1 and recall Bellamere and Jones. The issue is icing a 4th line that has both Rosehill and Rinaldo in game 1. You could waive Rosehill and place White on LTIR to keep Bellamere and Jones on the day one roster and give up 55k in cap space. Unfortunately, both options would mean no Morin on the big club for his 9-game look. If you really want Morin up for his nine games, you will have to take a hit in the hundreds of thousands. From what Panachio was saying today, Flyers may have already decided to send Morin back anyway.
OccamsRazor Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 Well for one Morin would be part of my starting 6 to start the season at least for 9 games and then I would make a call. Just waive Schultz and use MDZ as the 7th then when the time comes if its Morin waive MDZ and call up the kids when need be...or leave the kids alone and recall Manning and Ollie when need be the waiver is good for 30 days before having to clear waivers again.
AJgoal Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 One other option is to bury Schultz. Take a cap penalty, but in this case, you want it.
radoran Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 It's not that I "really want" Morin to get "his" nine games - it's just that it's what I believe the Flyers will do.
murraycraven Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 Not sure I believe it and it goes against what Hextall has claimed all along but interesting nonetheless... http://www.broadstreethockey.com/2014/10/2/6896401/flyers-trade-rumors-defense-samuel-morin

I just don't won't them to damage Sammy forcing him into the lineup.
murraycraven Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 Agreed... A little worried they are rushing it too. Everything is up in the air but you never know... It will be interesting to say the least. Just hope they are patient with the kid.
ruxpin Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 One question: WHY? Just send him back to juniors and let him continue to develop. If they pay this right, they could have a heck of a defense in a few years. Don't screw it up by sending out a guy who isn't quite there and waste an ELC year. It's not like they suddenly become a contender with him.
