King Knut Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 http://mobile.philly.com/sports/?wss=/philly/sports&id=277978201I still think trading coburn is a disaster waiting to happen. Though this time next year or even maybe at deadline time, who knows. Without Timmo, there's NO way I'd trade coburn for what we'd actually get for him. Now Grossman on the other hand... Where do we sign?

Irishjim Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 thing is as long as coburn is paired with macdonald. you, me and countless others on this board will be offering to drive coburn, macdonald or both to the airport
Mad Dog Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 What the Flyers probably realized long time ago, but will never publickly say, is that Coburn is a below-avereage defenseman. Realistically, he had only two OK years, and those were when he was paired with Timo (when Timo was still Timo and not a shell of himself). And I've seen enough of McDudd® to grow to severely dislike him. The reality is this defense is just not very good; there is no reason to be diplomatic about it. Thing is, considering the Flyers are not contenders and won't be for a while thanks to the multi-year damage Homer inflicted on the team, they might as well just do nothing and wait untill Morin, Ghost, Sanheim, and Hagg are ready, which will essentially be equal to an overhaul, except this time it will be done more organically, unlike the way the Flyers always do it.
King Knut Posted October 4, 2014 Author Posted October 4, 2014 If the Flyers had realized that long ago, I doubt Coburn would have lead the team in minutes per game last year. He's not that bad, He's just not a number 1 and he's being asked to be one. If he was our 3-4 pairing, we'd probably be pretty happy with himWhat the Flyers probably realized long time ago, but will never publickly say, is that Coburn is a below-avereage defenseman. I would suspect that's mainly because there is nobody who is much better, which tells you all you need to know about how gruesome things are with regard to the Flyers' defense these days. He was -6 last year, -10 the year before. I swear it feels like he is on the ice every time the team is scored on.

Too bad Mez isn't still on the team or Coburn could be one of two anchors on this defense rather than an anvil

Seriously, for all the potential bright spots this team has, this very thing called lack of defensive is going to drive this forum mad and cause their hair to gray.As I said before in another post...there will be games we are going to want to crucify a whole of them.

King Knut Posted October 4, 2014 Author Posted October 4, 2014 ...which is why trading him without upgrading could be suicide. ...it seems like he's out for a lot of goals because he is... Mostly because he's just out there so much more than the others... Against the better players. My point remains. Let him play a #3 or #4 game and minutes and well dig him again. Expect him to shut down the best and QB the transition and PP and we will be disappointed. There are plenty of teams who'd love that reach, size and speed. Just not as their #1.
radoran Posted October 4, 2014 Posted October 4, 2014 It's amusing how much teams are all "these are people with families" when it comes to kvetching about the media reporting on potential trades. And then "it's a business" when they cut/deal/assign them to the AHL.
