General Manager Problems

So I don't see many people talking about this, so I'm going to go ahead and tackle it.

I'm not going to bash Hextall.

What I am going to suggest is that the Good Ole Boys musical chair rotation in Philly's GM office isn't just a problem because of a unified philosophy, it's a problem because we keep putting former players into the role.

Sure they get hockey and a sense of hockey players... Maybe.

But more importantly, these guys have at BEST a high school education.

And when insay high school education I mean the high school education of a dedicated student athlete who spends all spare time thinking and playing hockey. They have to to have made the NHL.

That's great for hockey sense, but in a cap world. You need more. You need math. You need to strategize salaries and contracts to coincide and not conflict.

It's a failure in hockey sense that we end up with VLC and Umberger, but it's a failure of basic math skills and critical thinking that we lost Carle and Jagr uselessly and have Hartnell then Vinny too big deal each.

Besides someone with the balls to tell Snider to shut up, they really need a tutor!

(the hartnell/umberger) trade for starters. he spent a few seasons in the kings front office and learned a bit from it...give it time this mess will never be fixed overnight

@King Knut

I undertsand where you are coming from, but I am sure you realize he came into an absolute nightmare of a situaiton.  In fact, I am actually surprised he even took the job knowing full well how difficult his task would be.

Have some patience.  It won't happen quickly, but Hexy is a smart man and he learned from a well-run system.  He'll get it right; I have confidence.

I get your point and its valid. However, I do not think its applicable to Hextall. Hextall was an understudy to Lombardi, whom with two rings on his hand, I think we can agree is an elite GM (also and while most forget this, Lombardi built / drafted many of the pieces that comprise San Jose today).

@King Knut  Well,  you are right about Hexy's education....from his Wiki page "Because of his father's career, Hextall's education was far from stable; each year began at Brandon, and once the hockey season commenced in October, he moved to a school nearer to where his father was playing. At school, he achieved B and C grades, putting in the minimum amount of effort, but his mind remained on hockey, and specifically goaltending."

  I get what you are saying, but it's just FAR to early to judge Hexy right now. He's made a few moves with basically no cap room to work from.
