Coburn on Crutches means what for the Flyers Defense?

Coburn is likely out for a period of time as he was on crutches for the home opener.  He will be evaluated more in the next few days and could be out for an extended period of time,

Basically we are looking at last years top defensive line of Coburn and Timonen out for a significant period of time.

So what does this mean for the Defensive lines?

Luke Schenn was a horrible with a  -5  and his partner Del Zotto was a -4.  I don't know if you even keep the two of them together as a pairing.

The make shift line of  MacDonald and Schultz wasn't too bad although Schultz isn't a long term solution if Coburn is out for several weeks.  And although Grossmann is exceptionally slow he and Mark Streit had a decent game.

Morin now isn't an option, So do both Ghostisbehere and Alt get a call up?  Or will we see a trade in the near future?

Greetings:

Necessity is the mother of invention...or maybe reinvention.  This is a pretty grim situation. But I can't see a trade. Panic might make things worse.

i kept saying give morin his 9 game tryout. but thats a moot point.. 1st call up will either be ALT or Lauderson..Ghost should have stayed there's that don't ever burn a year of ELC..even though the pens did that with Matta and hows that working out

Please don't bring ghost up. I think that's a horrible mistake. Morin would be too.

Go with Alt or Manning and find an aging veteran that wasn't signed over the summer. They just need to fill in;they don't have to be particularly good. This team isn't really close.

There is absolutely no reason to panic and screw up the long term game plan by trading for someone or rushing kids who common sense reality says aren't ready yet just to shove them out there on a sinking ship.

There is next to nothing positive that can come from it and such a high potential for damage so let's just be patient for once.

Patience Holmgren, patience. This is no contender...we don't need to mortgage the future here.

Amen.... no need to rush anyone at this point.  It is TWO games in... this defense is terrible - flat out terrible.   But, there should be no need to rush the kids.  If the defense is this bad we are going to be drafting at a very good spot.

Del Zotto reminds me a bit of Behold Randy!

I would bring up Alt, Manning, or Lauridsen. Maybe even give Hagg a few games.

If we had drafted Hamilton and Maatta, they'd still be in the minors.

Right. And if your defence is terrible,at least it's a good year to suck.

Hamilton would have been traded already for not winning the Norris as an 18 year old.

From the optimist's perspective...

I thought both Streit and Del Zotto looked really good. It's been a long time since the Flyers had two defenseman that can generate the kind of offense that those two can. And both have looked pretty good defensively as well.

As others have said... no need to panic (i.e., trade). I thought Schultz looked decent last night. If a call-up is needed, either Alt or Lauridsen would be my choice.

Agree with everyone else.  Alt / Manning / Lauridsen.  Though fans will be screaming for Ghost or Hagg, Hexy just has to stay the course.  No need to rush the kids.  I don't think Hexy is going to trade anybody.  This was a year of transisition anyway.  Plus as has been mentioned we are only 2 games in.  Do not panic!!!!

I think you spelled "Hextall" wrong.

If Sami Salo, Mike Komisarek, Joe Corvo, or Radek Martinek are still available *and* can be fit under the cap, I would explore an option of signing either of them to the end of the year.  If not,  Manning / Alt / Lauridsen is probably as good of an option as any.

The reality is it doesn't matter.  Even before Coburn went down, this defense was a disgrace.  I am sorry for being harsh, but it really was.  And now this may be the worst defensive corps in the entire league.

I think allowing an average of 3 goals a game should be a norm for this team this year.  It is what it is.  It is irreperable this year, sadly.

I thought MDZ and Streit were our best defensemen last night too.  Actually I have liked what MDZ has brought so far, he needs a different partner than Luke Schenn though. Streit hasn't been bad either so we're 2 for 6...MacDud has looked bad i don't know what's up there but he's been looking pretty shaky

I think Grossmann has been terrible, at this point i'd really consider waiving him , no one would give up any kind of asset for him and he's painfully slow, reaching all time, he's good for two hooking calls a night because he can't skate.

But that's exactly what we've always done.

If we agree that this team is a work in progress, and we agree that we're not rushing young guys, why not go to Alt/Manning/Lauridsen as a FIRST resort?

Like I said, I would be fine with either option.  Neither one will save the season.

are we really at a season-needs-saving point already?

I agree with how MDZ has looked, then I saw he was on ice for 5 goals against last night.  5.  Let that sink in...5 freaking goals.

I don't care if there were odd-bounces, etc...that's just flat out terrible.

I posted this in the shoutbox...look at the next 8 games.  Realistically, how many do you/we think they can win--given how they've played through 2 games?

We may not be at the "season-saving" point, but in 2 weeks they could very well be.

Gaz... I am in agreement.   He does provide some nice offense but his defense is bad - really bad.  Partnering him w/ a human puylon is not helping anything but his defense is very suspect.

Of course not.  It was more based on projections rather than the current conditions.  We entered the season in a season-saving mode.  ;)
