B21 Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 I caught about 40 minutes of the game throughout the evening. Some takeaways... Good: Pascal Dupuis. Enough said. Simon Depres. 3 blocked shots. +1. No giveaways. Looked real good I thought. Poised. Chris Kunitz. Leader by a landslide with 7 hits. I just worry how long he can play that physical at age 35. Olli Maatta. Rust? What rust? 3 assists. The New Guys. Hornqvist & Comeau scored. Erhoff looked good from what I recall. Spaling and Downie solid - Downie even got some PP time. None looked like being on a new team learning a new system was affecting their game. Bad: The PK. Sutter's shortie was nice but the Ducks were 3 for 6 on the PP. Then again, lots of teams can get burned by Corey Perry. Fleury. Kinda. The misplay out of the crease was vintage Fleury. He simply can't do that. I can't kill him on the Ducks first PP goal (Kesler) which was essentially a 5 on 3 after the broken stick. I missed the other 2 goals. Bad? He did make a couple of nice saves; one on Perry in close when he got the shoulder up on a shot from about 10' away. Complacency. Up 3-0 to tied 3-3. Again, it's the Ducks but still. I thought the Pepto Bylsma Pens were behind us. At the end of the day - not much to complain about.
Samifan Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 At the end of the day - not much to complain about. if you're looking to complain, come on over to the Flyers board
B21 Posted October 10, 2014 Author Posted October 10, 2014 if you're looking to complain, come on over to the Flyers board I'll leave that to you guys. No sense kicking a guy while he's down, right? You guys firing Hextall and trading Giroux yet?
Samifan Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 I'll leave that to you guys. No sense kicking a guy while he's down, right? You guys firing Hextall and trading Giroux yet? Nah, that conversation will be after Saturday nights game.
notfondajane Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 if you're looking to complain, come on over to the Flyers board I'm hoping to fight for first place with the Flyers at the end of the season of course with the tuxedo birds winning out right1
Yorick Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Yes, sir. Going 3-0 pretty fast, then getting tied, but responding with another three goals lead was an admirable effort. Also, Zach Sill had a great fight. I like that kid.
nossagog Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 Got to see the Leaf's game last night, a couple of observations: 1) Patric Hornqvist's spot on the 1A line with Crosby should now be cemented in. Short preseason for Crosby but they are working really well together. Having someone who understands where to go in the offensive zone when Sid has the puck AND has the hands to finish, nice. Nine shots on goal(as well as two missed), he's going to have a career year. 2) PK still looked shaky. Leaf's were 2 for 5 but the defensive positioning leaves a lot to be desired. Weak side was left open several times(Lupol's goals was because everyone followed the puck around the net, and Lupol came in on the weak side and no one picked him up. Interestingly, 14 players had short handed time last night(okay two had only 15 seconds), still, two solid units need to be decided on. 3) Loads of rust on Malkin. Although he had a goal and two assists, he looked a bit slow, and misplayed a lot of pucks. Sutter and Dupuis actually look good with him, wonder which one moves down when Bennet gets back. 4) Third and fourth lines looked great. At times when the Leaf's were able to get their top lines out against our third and fourth, then had limited oppurtunities and were pinned into their defensive zone by our bottom lines. The fast paced play is looking good, let's see how it operates when they get into the grind months with back to back games. 5) Erhoff quietly shining. Playing very solidly on defense, and is getting off his shots from the points. As time passes, he's going to pot some goals, and pick up a load of bonus assists off his shots. Overall, this was a pretty solid game, early in the season. As the newbies get used to the team, and the team gets more time in with the new system, things could get even better.
flyercanuck Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 @nossagog Another positive...I don't think you're going to have to worry about playing the Flyers in the postseason.
nossagog Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 @nossagog Another positive...I don't think you're going to have to worry about playing the Flyers in the postseason. Its still early, have faith.
flyercanuck Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 @nossagog It's still very early. I'm not going on 3 games, i'm going on the team I see.
Polaris922 Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 Amazing what an NHL grade bottom six and more aggressive coaching philosophy can do for you.
notfondajane Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 I see Fleury had decent numbers did he play well or was he pulling things out of his hindend?
Polaris922 Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 He played well in both games minus his puck handling flub... He's been respectable.
flyercanuck Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 Hornqvist is awesome! Yes, not exactly the "selling pennies on the dollar" we were hearing from the Pen faithful. His numbers will go up playing with either of your centers. Meanwhile "star" player James Neal, playing with Nashvilles vaunted offence has put up 0-0-0 -2 numbers. Shocked I tell ya!

I said "on paper". A 20 goal guy for a 40 goal guy is pennies on the dollar.
flyercanuck Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 I said "on paper". A 20 goal guy for a 40 goal guy is pennies on the dollar. So Neal is a 40 goal guy, with one 40 goal season under his belt, zero 30 goal seasons and several 20-odd goal seasons...playing with arguably the 2 best players on the planet. Hornquist is a 20 goal guy, with one 30 goal season, several 20 odd goal seasons, a much better all around player...playing with a bunch of plumbers in a defence first system. I think you may have got dollars on your pennies.
notfondajane Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 I'm curious,is there a woman's pro hockey league?
B21 Posted October 13, 2014 Author Posted October 13, 2014 So Neal is a 40 goal guy, with one 40 goal season under his belt, zero 30 goal seasons and several 20-odd goal seasons...playing with arguably the 2 best players on the planet. I think you may have got dollars on your pennies. Actually Neal has two 40-goal seasons. 21 in the lockout shortened season so I give him credit for that. 27 goals in 13-14 when he only played 59 games. Doesn't project to 40 but it's pretty darn close (not to mention that PPG pace, too.) In his 4 full NHL seasons Horqvist has avergaged 25 goals and 23 assists. Neal has been a PPG guy in 2 of his last 3 and almost in the other. I know. I know. Played with Malkin and Crosby blah blah blah yadda yadda yadda. I also know what Neal can do playing with them because he has done it. I know that not every player the Pens toss on a line with those guys puts up 40 goal and/or PPG seasons. I know Neal did. He was traded for a player who might. So far so good - I'm not complaining. But my only reason for making the comparison was the "Mario is a hypocrite..." argument. Traded certainty for the uncertain because he had enough of the player.
yave1964 Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 Anyone have a towel i can use to wipe the egg off my face for my comments about Dupuis being over the hill?
Yorick Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 I have a Terrible Towel, but not gonna give it to you. Usual tissues should be OK.
nossagog Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 Anyone have a towel i can use to wipe the egg off my face for my comments about Dupuis being over the hill? I think 'Ol Stone Hands' has a point to prove, I'm eating some crow also.
Polaris922 Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 I told you guys about Duper... Lol. Lucky guess perhaps...
notfondajane Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 I'm hoping for some consistency from Marc Andrea Fleury
