Get on Board (or go insane)

Thought this was a really good article (and interesting about the pick-protection) from BSH:

on Hextall will say a million times that he "likes his team" and thinks they can compete this season. He's been saying it since he took over as general manager, and he'll keep saying it, because he's not going to call his team bad in front of the media.

But I've been convinced basically all summer that ... well, to put it bluntly, Hextall is not an idiot. He doesn't look at the current Flyers roster and see a Cup contender or a team that can go deep in the playoffs. And here's the first real proof that he feels that way, via Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet:

One other note about Hextall, open in his desire to be patient: When Philly talked with Florida about the number one draft pick, he wanted some kind of cover in case the Flyers' 2015 first-rounder (which would have been part of the deal) was too high. "Lottery protection" is a staple of NBA trades. For example, when Steve Nash was traded from Phoenix to the Lakers, one of the return picks was a 2015 first-rounder. But, the Suns can't use it if it is top 5 in 2015 or top 3 in 2016-17. In 2018, it is unprotected. (Neither Hextall nor the
would comment.)

"He wanted some kind of cover in case the Flyers' 2015 first-rounder was too high."

You know, in case the Flyers were so bad that the 2015 draft pick would've been a top 10 pick, or even higher. He didn't want to give up that pick in a trade with Florida for last year's No. 1 pick, and he knew that the pick being high is a very real possibility.

This falls in line with his philosophy on the young defensemen. If he thought this team could be competitive this year, do you think for a minute that Samuel Morin would be in junior or Shayne Gostisbehere would be in the AHL? Hell no. We all know that those guys would improve the Flyers defense as it currently stands, and the Flyers wouldn't be comfortable letting a year of Claude Giroux's prime slip by if they thought they could compete for the Cup right now.

But Hextall has made clear that it's not about right now, even if he hasn't said that in as many words. And you know what? That's OK, even if it's a departure from basically everything we've ever known with this organization. Hextall has a plan. It's going to take a year or two or three, and we're just going to have to get on board.

I am perfectly fine with having patience to advance and develop the future of our team. The owner is being patient to this point, but he needs to remain that way. So far, so good but if they get off to another slow start next season, and ticket sales are down, my fear is the owner will go ape s*it, and demand another impulsive move to make them competitive. We'll be lucky next year if he doesn't demand the trade of Morin or Ghost for a 35 year old d man, if they only get 2 wins for the month of October, much like they'll likely get this month. This team isn't going anywhere as presently constituted, but the future looks bright if it is allowed to develop. McDavid or bust!

If you're going to stink, there's worse years to do it than this one.

Completely agreed. Like 2007, for example

And then losing the lottery.

And then trading that player for a 3rd pairing defenseman :)

I hope Hexy makes a few trades this year to pick up some picks in the upcoming draft.

Honestly, if he could put a package together at the deadline to get a team's 1st overall, that would be great.

@brelic

That's one thing I'll say about Clarke, he knew how deep the 03 draft was.

I think this is similiar to the 04 draft at the top...the 2nd overall could be as good as the 1st. But after that there's still 6 or 7 elite talents, followed by plenty of really good ones.

I'd be ok with packaging, say, Schenn and Laughton, or maybe one of our young defensemen for a 1st rounder. That would give us two 1st rounders that we can use to restock with even better talent (potentially). Especially if one of the picks is near the top.

It would be nice to have a 2nd round pick in this deep draft to but they had to give it up to get their franchise Dman in Macdud...so glad they have their cornerstone now to build around!!!

@mc- I think you just came up with the Flyers slogan for this season! Please contact their marketing department so they can begin preparing the T-shirts to give away at the next home game.

Flyers hockey "get on board or insane" in text onthe front, picture of Steve Coates on the back!

I think it could work!

Well it would have to be near the top to deal both...or one of the defencemen. Otherwise you're hoping you get a Schenn or a Laughton or one of our defencemen in the draft.

Ah 2nd round picks never amount to anything anyway.  :blink[1]:

And that #1 scores the Cup winning goal in your building, for the OTHER team. Argh!

Some years ago, when Hatcher retired, he talked about Homer as the new GM. He said that Homer needed to have a plan, and he needed to stick to it. I think it's fair to say that if there ever was a plan, Homer didn't stick to it. He did some good things (and some bad things) but as a GM he was too reactive. Hextall by all appearances does indeed seem to have a plan. Fans should give him a chance to stick to it.

I think Homer had a plan - it's just that it was always a plan with a short-term view and short-term goals that came at the expense of long-term goals.
