Need to vent...

Avs didn't execute the first two, and Philly got lucky. Not so in the third, but largely due to letting the foot off the gas.

One odd note that bothered me: G after the first saying he had no idea how much time was left on the PP, and listening to the fans. W. T. F.

Brel, he needs to put upstairs and keep him there. I take back my dislike for Rinaldo as I would rather he be in the lineup over Umberger. The guy has become a total stiff and is slow as balls... He and VLC on the same line is like purposely trying to lose a game.

That 3rd goal against shows why Umberger belongs in the press box... He is a frigging joke....

I apologize as this topic has been put through the discussion mill for a while but he is flat out bad.

I would like to have Hartnell back... as stupid as it sounds.

Umberger still works out in the Flyers favor. He will be bought out, for two fewer years of cap hit relative, and free up a roster spot 15-16. Now it's up to the young guys to earn it.

Hartnell is better, but I don't miss him. At all.

In a heart beat.Hartnell potted two tonight (unfortunately in a losing effort). If for no other reason, the Flyers could have at least gotten something of value for him at the trade deadline instead of the stink pile that is Umberger. I really like Hextall as GM, but this was a horrid move. I wish the NHL was like the NFL where you could just cut a player. The only problem is that the Flyers do not really have anyone at the AHL level to play wing.

Jim, you can still buy him out, it just counts against the cap. I want to say 1.6 million for two years, then 1.5 for two more.

And thus making it an even more of an idiotic more. I still think Hartnell at the trade deadline garners a late first round pick or a 2nd and 3rd to a team making the push that needs a) leadership, b) a banger, c) a stand in front of the net and take abuse / score guy.

Does Umberger have any of those qualities?

And while Hartnell can barely skate, Umberger makes Hartnell look like Sergie Federov.

Other than the part where he was looking ahead to how Hartnell and his contract were going to affect the team going forward. I doubt Hextall thought Umberger for Hartnell straight up was a good trade. I sure as heck didn't.

Probably why he drove a hard bargain and got a 4th with Umburglar...

Jarmo Kekalainen told hextall "we will give you a 1st round pick for taking our garbage and giving us Hartnell". Hextall said, "nah, just give me a 4th round pick, we suck, but you guys suck worse"

MC:

I think this was primarily a cap-clear with the hope of obtaining a more rounded, less penalty prone player. The cap bit is Homer's. I acknowledge the trigger was Hexy. But I have to wonder if anyone could see the drop-off we have seen so far in Umberger.

@Howie58

I'm going to guess the team that sat him out and announced publicly that they were going to buy him out saw it.

I for one sure as heck didn't think it was a fair trade. But it seemed at the time there was more than a few who did.

It was a case of both teams trading one problem for another.

Like it or not, Hextall and Berube publicly stated the 'problems' they had with Hartnell - slow, poor conditioning, heavy penalty minutes - and add the overcommitment to him with a 6-year contract, and Hartnell apparently was a 'problem' Hextall felt he needed to solve.

Umberger was a problem for Columbus.

Ya, i got that. The lesser of two evils thing.

But when the trade was made I didn't think we were getting a "good' player. And say what you want about Hartnell (not YOU specifically) he is a good player. I don't think he will be at the end of his contract, so I get where Hextall is coming from.

Yeah, he is a good player. In Philly, that meant being paired with Jake and Giroux. He was tried in other spots with mixed results - and maybe not enough time was given to see things through. But the way he's playing now is above anything he did in Philly, even in his 30/30 year. Coincidence? Or is he in a better situation? Motivated by being traded?

I like the guy, I like his sandpaper, I like that he was considered a great teammate, I like that he was apparently a great person for the community. And it was a big loss for Giroux off the ice, as they were apparently pretty close.

In Umberger I thought we were at least getting a guy who could play well defensively. So far, that has clearly not been the case.

FC, Bre, and DramaT:

I have to claim a senior moment...forgot that he was mentioned for buyout.  This was trouble exchange.  It is hard for me to imagine how Umberger's skills have eroded.  I remember the guy as having a good work ethic and decent stats.

Here is the guy's record:

2010-11 seems to be the "paradigm shift."  I guess the thirties have not sat well.

Peace,

Howie
