pilldoc
Ok looks like Randy Carlyle just got the boot in Leaf land. Just thinking outloud here. What are your thoughts on him as a coach here? Just curious. Figured it would come up sooner or later...so I figured I'd be the one to ask first. Would he be a good fit here? What is is track record for developing younger players? just looking for everyone's thoughts....... You won't hurt my feelings if you all think it is a bad idea. I'm not perfect. On the other hand, Leafs fans may be the most delusional people on the face of the planet. Still no thank you on Carlyle.
AJgoal
Stick it out with Berube for the year, UNLESS you feel he's negatively impacting the development of players on your team. Then fire him and go with an interim. See how the offseason shakes out for coaches re: firings. If he makes it to the coaching equivalent of free agency, get Babcock to come take a look at the team and the farm... I think the chances are low he signs here, I figure he has a destination in mind if he doesn't re-up with the Wings, but it doesn't hurt to see if he can be persuaded. Otherwise, I look outside the Org at some up and coming AHL guys and assistants on winning clubs. There aren't any guys currently out of work with HC experience that I'm really interested in. murraycraven
UNLESS you feel he's negatively impacting the development of players on your team. Here is the thing for all of the Berube Truthers out there: Since the beginning of the year this Team has progressively gotten worse. This was HIS year with a full camp and then another mini-camp during the season. The constant line jarbling (is that a word) is beyond explanation. His ridiculous use of punishing players for accountability (the wrong players) issues is another thing that is baffling. Dont give me they play better w/out Coburn - if Berube were a coach that was equal to all parts he would have sat his ass and RJ's ass a lont time ago. What really makes you think this guy can Coach? No identity, no system, no clue. Honestly, I am getting to the point that I need hope when it comes to Berube. Otherwise, he is lower on the "Bad Philly Coaches" the list than John Stevens IMO. I am glad to be wrong here - I really am. I dont see this guy as a good NHL coach.
doom88
Berube did a good off season job. Players showed up in shape, ready to go, and may have changed Voracek in a good way forever.I do wonder if this is the product of losing a glue guy in Hartnell, and the best team defenseman / experienced leader in Timonen.Lavy did the same things with lines and accountability. Difference is, Berube has more square pegs (hello VLC, newly added RJ, and now Read).Homercoaster, embrace the horror, etc.

With this roster, the Flyers will compete for a top draft pick regardless of who is coach. Allowing Betube to stick around 4 more months can only hurt the development of Laughton and any other youngster Hextall may decide to ride out the season with if he decides to start shipping asses out of here. Show him the door now and give Lappy the interim tag for the remainder of the season. Hextall will then have 6 months to try and put a new coaching staff together before the draft. radoran
I do wonder if this is the product of losing a glue guy in Hartnell, and the best team defenseman / experienced leader in Timonen.I think this has a lot to do with it.If Hextall knew he wouldn't have Timonen, I seriously doubt he trades Hartnell. That's just about all of the long term "veteran" presence on the team. That's a lot to put on the coach starting his first full season in the league. Something that really should not have to be asked from a professional athlete. Where the fall off from last year and the beginning of this year is what is on the ice. He has players that dont fit his system but the question remains what is his system? They have pregressively gotten worse since he took over. Nearly the same team as last and even in better shape - so what gives?

Nearly the same team as last and even in better shape - so what gives? Showing up in shape was something Lavy's teams didn't do, and even Timonen grumbled about it. With the experienced leadership void on the team now, it HAS to come from the coaches - but it should be players teaching young players how things work at this level.Someone here broke down Berube's system as center lock, but the players aren't executing. We already touched on the Timonen injury, and I think we are seeing how sorely we underestimated his value. Mostly the same team, but take out two lynchpins and it all collapses.
murraycraven
Berube's system is not a center lock and if that is what his system is he clearly needs to go back to a level 3 USA hockey certification. That is a defensive forecheck scheme so what about offense? Lavy also went to the cup with philly. I guess they were all out of shape that season? And would that not be on the players and not Lavy based on what you have already said? Please give me the ins and outs of his center lock system bc as a Coach I would love to hear it... And make sure I never execute it this system with my team. Are you saying he trying to use a left wing lock, a center weak side lock or what?Watch the F1 and F2 on the forecheck tonight... This is not a lock/trap... And if that is what they are trying it is a disaster.
doom88
No argument on the last part whatsoever. I also didn't post the center lock system post. Lavy was known for soft camps, and it finally did him in. That doesn't mean the whole season, but definitely the first month.

murraycraven
I only take the directed ones personally I won't direct them anymore... Lol. On the plus side they are playing well tonight. Seem to be giving a bit more fight tonight. I think these guys need to learn how to play for each other... Tough hockey does not take 100 percent talent. But talented teams hate to play against tough teams... If they could play tough hockey I think this team could be decent. They are soft and fragile right now... They need to get out a few wins and get some confidence.

AlaskaFlyerFan
Devils advocate font. Carlyle was a Norris trophy winner as a player. He knows defense. He took Anaheim to the Conference finals in his first year as coach and won the cup in his 2nd year.He was given a turd in Toronto. In his 2nd year with the Leafs, he took them to the playoffs for the first time since 2003 (a 9 year drought). He got virtually no support from the GM as far as roster moves are concerned. We all know that no matter how much you polish a turd, it is still a turd. He took JVR from being a draft flop to a decent power forward. He has been more successful as a head coach than 60% of the coaches in the NHL.
