Vancouver Blanks Us

Hello:

I have to agree with Serravali that this may be the game that ends any illusion of playoff. The heck with the playoffs. For a team that was supposed to have a talented group of forwards, the gang looked pretty inept on offense.

Emery's playing time between now and season's end will be limited.  Granted, two of the goals tonight he gave up may have been tough saves but in general he just doesn't seem to have lateral mobility or the will/ability to challenge shooters.  Our D doesn't help but his play doesn't inspire.

The fan booing was loud.  And richly deserved.

Howie

P.S.  I think any of us here could be more cogent and insightful that Boucher between periods.  He seems emotionless.  Or maybe he is too disgusted and has to hide it.

It's zepp and Emery.

They're playing too cautiously and tentatively out of their zone. They're scared to be aggressive in the O zone.

There's really no hope for this team if this is how they react to gettjng shut out last night.

It's going to take too much to fix this wussification.

If I'm Berube I'm asking them every night, "what the eff is WRONG with you guys? Who gives up like that?

That said, I'm equally disappointed and hopeful every time they lose. Thensamenusntruenwhen they win.

End of the season and a new coach can't come soon enough as far as in are now. I can't believe they fired Lavvy for Chief at this point. I just can't believe it. We're the phantoms even good under him or was it just total nepotism?

I think we need to look at the realistic picture here coming into tonight's game.

The Flyers have played  3 games in 4 nights.  They are without 2 of their top 4 d-men which means they have d-men who typically do not get a lot of minutes playing greater roles.  And they are without the #1 goalie.

If I were to look at the NHL as a whole, I'd be pretty confident that the majority of the good teams lose at least one of those 3.  And we are not a good team.  All 3 teams we played are currently ranked as playoff teams.

Granted they were shut out in these last two games,  but the Flyers played well against the Caps in a 1-0 loss.

It is a shame they way this game went because the first 5 mins they came out like gangbusters and had Vancouver back on their heels.  We gave them a nice ovation for some of those early shifts and then the game went downhill fast.  I should have stayed home last night, it is just that I cant give my tickets away right now and I hate to waste them.  To boot I  took a risk and tried out a new "free parking" spot and got a $41 parking ticket! It was a great night all around :confused[1]:

Don't tell that to the players.

there is definitely that... no argument at all...the problem is that I wish they would stink more for a better draft pick.

They do sound ridiculous

“I don’t know why we stopped playing,” defenseman Mark Streit said. “There’s no reason with the team we have.  I don’t know. I don’t know. I can’t, I can’t explain it.”

I think they stink enough to sneak into the bottom five, but they aren't naturally bad enough to get one of those coveted top two picks. What I'm wondering is if they can't get there on their own, should they try to? What is reasonable to give up to get McDavid or Eichel? They are trying to build a young core, but chances are if they want one of those two guys, some young guns gonna have to go.

I prefer these:

It’s not fun, losing more games than you win, but I think we have hope in here, we have drive in here,” Emery said.. “We believe in ourselves, but we realize that every game is important.

“It’s a tough situation but… we never give up,” Streit said.

That's Hallmark card-level inspiration right there. In fact, my day just did a 180 because of those words of wisdom. I feel unbeatable.

I think after the deadline and if they move some pieces they definitely will get somewhere in the top 5...   I would trade a young talent for a top 3 pick for sure.  Eichel, MacDavid and Hannifan would be a HUGE boost.

Which ones though?

For me, it depends on whether they would get one of the top 2 or top 3. I would prefer McDavid or Eichel and would gladly part ways with a combination of current players (Simmonds, Schenn, Couturier, or Laughton, prospects (Morin, Haag, or one of the other defensive prospects), and picks to get them. But if I end up with 3 and take Hanifin, I'm not sure I'd want to trade away too much, particularly from our defensive prospect pool. Trading a young, potentially year or two away, defensive prospect for another younger defensive prospect almost seems backwards in a way.

tough call... I would trade any of the players you listed w/ the exception of Morin for a top two pick.   Morin, Gost and Sanheim are my only untouchables at this point.   To get a player like a MacDavid or Eichel you are going to have to give up a lot.   I could be swayed though... My only true untouchable is Sanheim - to me he is not even up for discussion.

Morin is the most valuable prospect we have imo. He plays D, is big, and physical - all of which this team desperately needs. I do not part with him easily. In fact, I think the only way I would is if I got the #1 pick. I simply think he has what we need the most.

If they are going to try and move up though, I think they are sort of stuck. They are trying to build a young core. They've actually been doing it for the last 3-5 years. A number of the forwards have been playing together for several seaons now. But they are also very likely going to part with some of them if they want one of the elite spots. So how do you stay the course (with the young core), but try to improve at the same time? And they have to try, because this core obviously is not good enough.

I agree they have to try and Hextall is not in an envious position.   I would add Morin to the absolute untouchables but I think Sanheim will be the best player in the long term.  Believe me I think Morin has a chance to be a stud too...

I would be fine offering up our pick and some sort of package of Schenn, Cooter, Laughton, etc... something is going to have to give as you say if they really want to get Eichel or MacDavid.  I guess it all depends on Hextalls vision although not sure what that is right now.

I don't get excited over prospects. I'm excited about Morin (I didn't use the word "however" there, so I'm hoping you are able to decipher what I mean).

I might actually be most inclined to keep Couturier from that group of three you mentioned because of his skillset. Giroux, McDavid, and Couturier down the middle covers both ends of the ice and offers up more variety than just trying to go for the "best" (offensive) three players at the position.

LOL... no worries!

I would probably keep Cooter as well...   Could you imagine those 3 down the middle?   That would be awesome... I can dream right!?

I'm glad you found that funny, because I was laughing to myself at my desk while typing it.

Those three down the middle are definitely appealing to me. Couturier could score 35 points a year for all I care behind those two.

Well, for some reason my post got cut.

I had contrasted Streit's "I don't get why we stopped playing" with "we never give up"

Those two statements are fundamentally at odds with each other.

These guys are just spouting gibberish and Streit is in the "leadership group."

No worries, I saw it.

The contrast of his statments were funny to me. Like you said, they are just spouting gibberish at this point and I just have to laugh at it. Did you see Berube the other week when he outright refused to comment on an injury? I thin it was Mason? Someone asked him a pretty normal question and he said, "I don't comment on injuries." They followed up with, "But..." He just looked at them at repeated it. They all sound like a bunch of morons right now.

the problem with this team is they dont have a good coach, look at all the teams that were bad now have good winning records, they have great coaches and good goaltending, they didnt overhawl the roster, although the it needs to be on this team when it comes to defense, yes it's the players fault but it has a bad effect on them negatively when you have a coach that doesnt know what he's doing.
