JagerMeister
Who is the better player? Things to consider are peak, prime, two way play, consistency, ETC Have a feeling people here will choose malkin, Because Ovechkin is "lazy" or "cant carry his team to the playoffs" , even if i disagree. flyercanuck
@JagerMeister Malkin is, over their careers, the better all around player. Ovechkin is a goal suck. It was all he cared about. Not winning, goals. He seems to have finally figured out that every coach he ever had was right and he was wrong. Hockey actually is a team game. Malkin was never known for his defensive play and even Ovi was known for his physical play and Malkin only beats ovi in playmaking. How can you know all he cared about was goals? because he scored alot of goals? lol... goals win games. Its not his fault HIS team wasnt good enough to make the playoffs, after all. its a team game and one player cant carry his **** team to the playoffs
flyercanuck
Ovechkins physical play usually was something in the area of OV taking himself completely out of the play and launching himself into someone. The guy should have been suspended several times. Malkin can be "physical' too. From watching both of them over the years, I'd take Malkin over OVechkin. I doubt I'm the only one...you hear his name being thrown around with the word "Hart" a lot more than ol' -52. Malkin has Crosby on his team. Ovechkin has Backstrom. A slight downgrade for sure. They both have other good and bad players after that. Ovechkin is just not much of a captain.
radoran
"Garbage stat" or not, a guy that scores 51 goals with 27 even strength and is still -35 is not a solid defensive player... Then, of course, there are the coasting/floating GIFs out there with the "controller disconnected" tag line. I'll take Malkin as the better all around player, but I might be convinced OV has more "skill" should he ever decide to "play" hockey.

And actually, Ovechkin is in the hart conversation more then malkin. After all, The Hart trophy does mean "player most valuable to his team" and NOT "best player in the league" With Crosby in the same team as Malkin, its kind of hard for him to be in the hart conversation. Same as Malkin, and Ovechkin has had more selke votes then Malkin. Malkin is no better then Ovechkin when it comes to defensive play.
flyercanuck
@JagerMeister Actually I did pull that number out of my arse. I knew it was bad and just took a guess. OV is a great scorer. He's not a great player. He's a better version of Phil kessel with a worse haircut...if that's possible.

Well thats ****ed up logic, you dont need to be good at both ends to be a great player. So i guess brett and bobby hull, selanne and bure arent great players, but simply great scorers. flyercanuck
When you watch your team play 4 on 5 when you don't have the puck, no, you're not a great player. You don't have to be anywhere near a Selke candidate, but put in a bit of effort. Which Steve Yzerman was the better player...the one who wanted to score 150 points or the one who won several cups? I'll take the guy who helped his teammates win cups over personal glory all day every day. Just my opinion...you asked.

Just my opinion...you asked. The Steve Yzerman that one several cups also had a far better team then the yzerman that scored 150 points. yes, Ovechkin has been lazy up until this year, But so have several other players in the past. Did lemieux put in effort defensively in his younger years? hell no, and brett and bure sure as hell didnt put alot of effort in defense. They were great players, no denying there talent. Maybe the better word for Ovechkin is he was not a team player, but im also a bit skeptical of giving him that as well
