icehole
It seems like I might be one of the very few that think Edmonton getting the #1 pick was the best scenario besides,of course the flyers getting the pick. For one,Edmonton is one of the two teams in front of the flyers that is in the west. Out of those two teams,I think Edmonton is most likely to trade down to have more prospects and picks.Concentrating on just Edmonton and the flyers,I'd like to give my opinion on why it could happen. For one,the flyers have the #7 pick. If eagles fans and national football reporters think the eagles can move up 18 or 19 spots to get the best player at arguably the most important position in sports, why can't the flyers move up 6 or 5 spots to get one of many forwards in the draft. It's a different situation but might not be that far fetched.I believe Edmonton is lacking defense and goaltending more than offensive talent. McDavid wouldn't help them with that.If the flyers are giving the 7 pick, ghost and/or one other defensive prospect, and a schenn or couturier, isn't that enticing to them? And my last point is a stretch but it may have some validity. Edmonton has picked in the top five how many times now and what has that got them? Maybe they are looking to do things a little differently this time. flyercanuck
You don't trade away generational talents. Unless your trade partner wants to totally gut their team. We can't afford to trade for McDavid. And I doubt Edmonton wants to trade him. They have plenty of good forwards they can deal for help.
brelic
If Edmonton trades the 1st overall, they should just fold right now. And the GM should be publicly lynched. Now, if you're talking the Oilers trading a young player like Eberle, Hall, Yakupov, whatever, to fill those needs you're talking about, then that to me is a much more plausible scenario. Just for fun, I posted a joke trade proposal yesterday for McDavid. It's today's equivalent of what we traded for Lindros. Would you trade Laughton (not even close to Forsberg equivalent), Streit, Del Zotto, Rinaldo, Mason, our #7 this year, our 1st rounder in 15-16 and 16-17, and $15M in cash for McDavid? And don't forget, Quebec basically *had* to trade Lindros because he cried his way out of playing there. They risked losing him for absolutely nothing. Even that package above is not enough to land McDavid. Now, swap out Laughton for Giroux, and Rinaldo for Voracek, and you probably have a deal. Bertmega
@icehole Did you type that in all sarcasm font? The Flyers have nothing that Edmonton would want to move down that far. McDavid is the real deal and if they traded him (or that pick) for anything short of a king's ransom, i'd be surprised. If anything, I could see it more along the lines of trading with Arizona to stay in the top three and asking for Oliver Larsson along with that top three pick. Maybe that would open the door to a conversation, but it would probably even take more in my opinion.

brelic
Just throwing that out there Bah, Lindros was a giant man-child. Let's hope it's the one and only time we ever see that kind of embarrassment.
flyercanuck
@Polaris922 He may well change his mind if they don't change their management. And then there's the whole Katz/Bassin lawsuit. McDavid is very fond of his gm.

fanaticV3.0
I don't think we end up with him, but I think our best chance of landing him is that he doesn't want to play in Edmonton. From what I understand, his face did not convey the happiest of emotions when it was announced Edmonton won the lottery.
idahophilly
Who's face would!? I saw it live and that's the first thing I said. If he has two cents of wit, he goes play in Edmonton, gets through his entry level contract while playing lights out, fights with them on his RFA re-up and waits for a MASSIVE pay out in UFA market down the road. He might even win a cup in Edmonton along the way IF Edmonton can get it's head out of their collective arses...

I don't see Orr going along with any Lindros-esque shenanigans.
flyercanuck
@JackStraw And again, McDavid never looks excited. He keeps his emotions in check better than anyone I've seen.
Lindbergh31
@flyercanuck Maybe Katz will drop the lawsuit now that McDavid will be an Oiler so he'll make his money back with increased ticket sales and merchandise with McDavid's name on it. Edmonton's been at 100% capacity throughout this nine-year wander in the wilderness. The only place they can add sales is the playoffs. Or a new building - which would likely also be sold out, regardless. I mean, what the heck else is there to do in Edmonton??

I appreciate your optimisim,but.... mmmmmmmehhI don't know. The oilers have said they're not trading the pick... okay maybe that's just what GMs do.the NFL and the NHL are different, but Mariota and McDavid are WAY different. McDavid isn't quite a Lindros or Crosby type #1 overall, but he's up there. This is a once every ten or twelve years kind of player. mariota isn't nearly that well regarded. McDavid is far more of a Peyton Manning type prospect. If Edmonton is lacking in Defense and Goaltending, what are we going to give them? Our defensive propsects who won't play regular shifts for two more years at the soonest? Mason? If you're suggesting we trade Ghost, Sanheim, Morin and Mason for McDavid... I guess it's possible the Oilers might bite, but personally I'm not sure how I feel about that and I highly doubt Hextall will (unless they agree to take Vinny, Umberger and McDonald too .Ghost, Schenn and #7 overall? Sure I'd do that in a heartbeat. But I kind of doubt the Oilers do.
radoran
@radoran Flat highway with not much traffic. I've done it several times while there. Right, but it's not like it's downtown or every relatively nearby - it's a 2.5-3 hour drive at least (Google Maps pegs it at 3h 50m). Players don't come to Philadelphia because it's "near" the Shenandoah Valley.
Poulin20
Anything can happen but if we traded the whole team for the #1 pick it would fly in the face as to what Hexy is professing he wants to do. I think Hex is going to stay the course and either have a long sustained period of success of go down with the ship in a few years for being too conservative and not pulling the trigger on some move that was perceived to put us over the top. i don't see it happening....
