What would you do?

I think we all agree the league does nothing to protect Sid from the dirty hits... see Steckel, Hagelin, Hedman, Staal, Downie, etc etc...  through recent years.  I've heard this notion mentioned a few times...

If you were Sidney Crosby, would you continue to be the "face of the NHL" in so many ways if the league wasn't protecting you on the ice?

Sid should try whining, see if that works.

If I were him I'd get a diaper change. Everything looks better with a clean one...

Seriously though, if you are referring to the hit yesterday it looked to me like Crosby skated into the other player. I'd have to see it again but that's what I recall. I don't think the ref even called a penalty.

When I first saw the replay close-up I thought it looked kinda bad, like maybe the Ranger player accidentally-on-purpose ran into him. But when you see the replay from further away, with more of the ice in view, it looks very much like the Ranger player is skating to his bench and Sid is taking off up ice, with speed at an angle and with his head down.

Sorry @Polaris922, but that appears to be the case, no?

@idahophilly

@Podein25

Hagelin is looking in the direction of Sid where Sid is looking behind to his left for the puck to move up.  Hagelin is clearly skating into him on purpose unless he was suddenly struck blind.  Very similar to the Steckel hit that took Sid out with the concussion/neck tissue damage.  Should have at LEAST been an inteference.  I'm not saying there was an intent to injure, but there was a clear intent to make contact.

I guess my question is what are you expecting him to do?   Stomp into the leagues office and cry and whine?   The league can do what they want to promote him as he is their property after all.

It is similar to the Steckle thing - and worrisome for Pens fans for sure since those glancing sideways blows seem to be bad for concussions.

But I don't see how you can determine that Hagelin did that intentionally from the video. Hagelin is not looking in the direction of Sid - he's looking towards his bench, because he is clearly going for a line change. Sid enters his line of vision. It might still be interference, but those kinds of incidental collisions happen all the time. Besides, shouldn't Sid have some responsibility to have his head up?

@murraycraven

He's following the puck. Isn't that WHY we have interference in the first place? Protecting players from hits away from the play?

As for what would he do... Stop showing up for all the NHL gigs. All the PR stuff he does. He could just not go any more.

I wouldn't worry too much about it...he's on the clock for face of the NHL. Next year there's a new sherriff in town.

They never protected Lindros.

McDavid has a lot to prove before that happens. Especially in Edmonton.

Actually, no. Interference is about unfairly impeding someone's ability to get at the puck. It has nothing to do with Sid's, or anybody else's, tender noggin.

I've changed my mind. I said earlier that maybe it could have been called interference. But Hagelin is in a skating lane. He's in his lane and never really departs from it. He's clearly looking forward to his bench at 11 o'clock. Sid is to his left. Sid skates into his lane which he is more than entitled to keep. So not interference.

Then my friend, it's time to see the optometrist. Even the Rangers announcers said it "could've been called". Lol. I think your dislike for Sid is clouding your objectivity.

I actually posted this topic because it's been a topic of discussion on local radio. Was interested in points of view about how the NHL fails to protect its star players, and seems the only league to do so.

Nope. You're wrong. There is no evidence that Hagelin is doing anything there except skating in a straight line to his bench.

So his lane was diagonal now? You said skating lane. Which is it?

Now I think you're just jerkin my chain. You can even see him cut left into Sid on YouTube. Lol.

He was in a lane, he stayed in his line and skated toward his bench in that lane.

Stop your whining.

Whining? YOU telling me about whining? How splendid. So any discussion about whether a hit is interference or not is whining. You, sir, should stick with arguing incorrectly about the rule, rather than 4th grade insults.

Just watched and re-watched it in slow motion. Hagelin does NOT change coarse. This is why people can't stand Crosby. It's not him. It's the fans of his. Crosby didn't protest the hit nor his team mates.

So rather than debate the topic of protecting stars and how a guy like him does everything the league asks despite no protection from hits like Steckel's or Downie's... You choose to go typical Flyets on me and debate one call/non-call then insult me as a fan. AFTER saying you're getting back to the point...

I should rephrase my topic to read... For anyone who wants to have an objective conversation about the topic Lol

Yes. The question was, Sid gets hammered with cheap shots quite often, and the league turns a blind eye to them. The officials "miss it", then the league doesn't even review it most of the time.

Eliminate the Hagelin hit as you feel that was incidental. Staal cross checking his head... Repeatedly. Downie slew footing him. Steckel's shouldering his head. Stuff like that.

The league does nothing. Yet Sid goes all over promoting the game FOR THE NHL. Remove names from the equation. ANY star player...

Would it make a statement to the league if they just quit doing that stuff for the league. NOT their team... NOT their own charities.. Just the NHL.

Or would nobody care. We'd never really know the difference... Or would we?
