King Knut
But Murray says it's the good kind of 20 lbs. That's a lot for a few months!"But in the big picture, when you look back 10 years from now, you might say Gostisbehere's injury was a real positive in the sense he became a player who really paid attention to the off-ice part of it and became a bigger, stronger player," Murray said Tuesday, one day after he and general manager Ron Hextall had individual exit interviews with the Phantoms, the Flyers' AHL farm team. "I think he's put on almost 20 pounds of good, solid weight and that's going to help him be ready at training camp."Read more at http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/flyers/20150422_Terry_Murray_high_on_Phantoms_Gostisbehere__Manning.html#6PrCPx3OUM1WbLSR.
hf101
Ah, but there is more to the story. That said, Murray thinks Gostisbehere probably needs another season in the AHL "to make up for the time he missed. He needs to get a little more knowledge and to improve his play without the puck."Hopefully that doesn't mean a whole season in Lehigh. A few good quotes by Murray also on some other players. On Straka - "He's got skill and NHL ability; he's pretty good inside and on shootouts, but . . . he gets a little casual, a little laid back," Murray said. "He gets off his game because that attitude to dig into the hard areas is not there on a consistent basis." Scott Laughton and Nick Cousins - "character kids who pushed their game to another level." He thinks they have a chance to earn spots with the Flyers in training camp. Danick Martel -"made an impression and he's only going to get better. He's fast, he's got a knack around the net and a real good attitude. He goes to the hard areas." "There's a lot of players his size in the NHL who are having a big impact on their teams," Murray said. "And that's the kind of attitude this kid has. Nothing bothers him playing against big guys." Robert Hagg and Taylor Leier need more seasoning in the AHL Anthony Stolarz has made strides but has a "long ways to go" before playing in the NHL and Murray isn't interested in the Flyers coaching job but is interested in being an assistant coach. Interesting comment on being an assistant coach- so does that mean Hextall is looking for a new Phantom's coach also?
flyercanuck
@hf101 I hope they're patient with Ghost. His game development was basically put on hold last year. Glad to hear he added some much needed muscle, but that doesn't teach him how to play pro hockey. I'd rather see him gain confidence in all aspects of his game in the A than have it ripped out of him in the NHL. And that goes for all the other D prospects except Sanheim who should stay put in junior.

Just rumor though. I'd take Murray as our special teams guy again. They were really clicking under him.

I think Ghost should be Mostly a phantom but should get jaunts with the big club. Maybe a few 5 game stretches. That's what I wanted for him last year. If we get the coaching situation we dream of, he should be able to pop up and down without having to learn different systems and thus he can learn the pro game and position in the A, but get glimpses of how I tense it is as the next level and slowly Begin to merge it together. I'm a big believer in challenging the players to be great, but without putting them in an impossible position to fail.
flyercanuck
@King Knut Watching the Red Wings success, having both teams play basically the same system, you have to wonder why ALL teams don't use this blueprint.

King Knut
Watching the Red Wings success, having both teams play basically the same system, you have to wonder why ALL teams don't use this blueprint. I think it's tougher for some teams because they literally don't have the control over the minor league affiliate that you'd want. The Flyers basically own the Phantoms. However no one owns the Hershey Bears and they have a history longer and far more seasoned than the capitals, so while the Caps can cultivate great talent on solid teams in Hershey, like Holtby, they essentially can't dictate to the Bears what to do in every aspect of their team. The Flyers can. I don't know about the Redwings. Like the Flyers, The Grand Rapids Griffins don't even have their own GM, but a lot of AHL teams do. I think to me the larger question is why the hell haven't the Flyers been working this angle themselves for the past 15 damn years!

How would we know? I mean we can assume this, but it's not like we watched Coliacovo and Schultz trying to play a system and failing.

Just rumor though. I'd take Murray as our special teams guy again. They were really clicking under him. I'd love to see McLellan bring Murray on board and have him be the assistant head coach. Murray is a smart man when it comes to systems and special teams. He'd be a great asset to McLellan and I think Murray could really get the young guys to buy into what McLellan is wanting from them. Add Davis Payne to work with the defense, keep Joe Mullen to work with the forwards and mak ean offer to Ray Emery to become the new goaltending coach and I think it's a team that could really be a nightmare to play against next season.
