nossagog
Well here it is. Elimination on the line. Prior to the series, I picked the Rangers in five. I'm still rooting and sending all the positive energy I can. But with the defense we're icing, I just don't see it. The Pens are playing so conservative trying to cover for the defense, that its playing right into the Rangers strength on defense. And the defense has to start to shoot the puck more. If the Rangers only need to cover our wings because our defense can't or won't shoot, it makes their job easier. Crosby's line has 5 goals in 4 games, the other lines have 2. The chip and chase scheme just doesn't work. Let the talent be talent and create instead of constant dumping and grinding. All the games have been one goal games, there's hope, but its slim. Three games with only one goal, not going to cut it. I'm hoping, I'm rooting, only time and effort will tell.

Crosby has been playing great hockey....and he's kept his mouth shut and stayed out of bs. Coincidence? I think not. Should have learned that years ago. mojo1917
I thought game 4 was the most boring playoff hockey game i've seen in a while. and it went to overtime...it was like a bor-a-thon. I imagine the list of injuries that will come out from the Pens post season presser will be extensive, they just look beaten , Malkin looks like he's trying but is a shell of himself. Crosby has been okay , putting Kunitiz on his line seems to have invigorated both players...i think Sutter has been the best and most consistent forward this series for Pgh. I also think 23 minutes a night of Ben Lovejoy is symptomatic of a team decimated by injury.

nossagog
Will there be a new Coach and GM after the season is over ???GM I hope so. I think after a good start, Rutherford traded for the sake of trading at the deadline and screwed the team. I don't think I'll ever forgive him for trading Simon Despres for Ben Lovejoy. Has to go down in history as one of the stupidest trades of all time. I criticized him for it at the time, and everything we feared came true with it. Granted, he was NEVER supposed to be playing on the top pair, he never was or will be that good. Letting MSL out from behind the net to set up the winning goal in Game 4 is proof of that. That trade, and the subsequent trade of Bortozzo, took away our only two physical defenseman.Add to that the complete mismanagement of the injurer players at the end of the year that left the Pens short handed because he did not put players he had to know were not coming back on the IR, he's exhausted the players that we did have down the stretch. Coach Johnston, as much as I hate the style of play, has an excuse. The injuries to key players all year, and especially at the end going into the playoffs, has handcuffed him in what he can do. I'd still like to see the Pens open up the offense a little, but again, when you don't have the breakout defensemen that the system is built on, its hard. flyercanuck
@nossagog I questioned that Despres trade the moment I heard it. But its nowhere near worst ever conversation material. But considering the shambles he left Carolina in, I never understood the JR signing in the first place. He got lucky with a hot goalie (who was their backup and only came in due to injury) or never would have won a cup.

The stretch run where we were having problems, he was usually the center of those problems on the defensive end, and he was supposed to bring "experience". If we would not have won that last game and missed the playoffs, HE would have been the player on the top of the list whose fault it was. He was, and is, THAT bad. HE is part of the reason that our offense is playing sooooooo defensively, to cover for his sorry A$$. I NEVER want to hear again that my team traded for "experience", I want talent and effort. He has neither. And for whatever reason, he's receiving top defensive time now, I don't understand it. Match up Martin and Cole as the top unit, move Lovejoy to play with Scuderi.Heck, move him to play with Chorney on the third pairing and move Doumilin up. And DON'T put that piece of dung out when it gets important. And everytime I watch the Ducks play, and I see how physical Despres is, it makes me sick. Despres would have planted MSL behind the net instead of fishing for the puck and allowing him to get to the front of the net on Wed. Three years from now when Despres is a physical force out west, we'll be still looking for a physical defenseman. We had him(actually we had two, him and Bort, but we got rid of them both). Sorry for ranting.

I'm curious if we trade Lovejoy, and get a pick for him?! I don't know who would take him. All they'd have to do is to look at tape from his time with the Pens. Maybe we could get a used bag of pucks for him, but would probably have to retain some of his contract too.

The season ended when Doan took out Letang. Already missing Ehrhoff and Maatta, then losing Pouliot too, they played hard with what they had to work with. Well, and the trade that brought us Lovejoy. That was double whammy. Fisrt we lose Despres in the trade, and then we have to play Lovejoy. In a twist of the old saying, getting Lovejoy was subtraction by addition. On his lonesome, he made us a worse team.

I'll never get the Lovejoy/Depres trade but the outcome of this series is no surprise considering how the 2nd half of the season played out. It will be an interesting offseason for sure.
