yave1964
PRESEASON OUTLOOK: Bad. The year before the Oilers added a bunch of mid level vets such as Boyd Gordon and Andrew Ference and brought in the hot young coach in Dallas Eakins but nothing worked. Going into this year the Oilers were just hoping that the team would get them a decent slot in the draft. Essentially they were eliminated by opening night. FINAL RECORD: 24-44-14 62 points 13th in the West. LOW POINT OF THE SEASON: After a 4-4-1 start beginning with a loss to the Preds on October 29th and thru December 27th when Calgary beat them 4-1, the Oilers went 3-22 being outscored during the 25 game stretch 91-50. Starting goalie Ben Scrivens went 1-15 during that stretch. HIGH POINT OF THE YEAR: "And the winner of the first pick in the draft is......" WHAT WENT RIGHT: Well they won the lottery so they get once in a lifetime player Conner McDavid, they signed Peter Chiarelli away from Boston to run the Hockey operations after he was let go. Good start to the offseason. During the year, Jordan Eberle (24-39-63) led the team in scoring and was solid. Leon Draisitl was not rushed ala Sam Gagner a few years ago, he got a chance to come along slow and should be a regular next season. RNH (24-32-56) was solid. Anton Lander was very good in 38 games. Oscar Klefbom got his feet wet and did not embarrass himself. Ben Scrivens during the second half was actually pretty decent. WHAT WENT WRONG: Taylor Hall missed 29 games and only mustered 38 points in 53 games played. Nail Yakupov was -35 and had 14 goals and was pretty awful. They played 40 players throughout the course of the year. The rookies, Draisatl, Marincin, Miller, Gazdic, Pakarinen, Hunt, Pitlick, and four more played a combined 217 games with a dreadful 12 goals. STRANGE STAT OF THE YEAR: The defense was offensive, although they provided zero offense. They managed a pathetic 18 combined goals between the entire blue line. Two d-men, OEL and Karlsson outscored the entire Edmonton defense each, all by themselves. UFAs:FasthRichard BachmanDerek Roy TOP PROSPECTS FOR 2015-16: Obviously all eyes will be firmly planted upon McDavid as comparisons to every superstar in the league have already begun. Darnell Nurse will be given every chance to nail down a top four role on the back end. Laurent Broissot is considered a decent goalie prospect and may muscle his way into the mix. Draisatl should be the third line center, being brought along slow but he has a huge upside.Musil should be in the mix for a lower pair on the back end. Lots of bodies were given ice time this year but few took advantage and the hopes are that some of these kids take the bull by the horns. OFFSEASON QUESTION MARKS: Already answered with chiarelli coming aboard and McDavid being the no brainer first pick in the draft. Whispers have been going for several years that Eberle will be dealt, might he finally go for the lock down d-man the team so desperately needs? J0e Th0rnton
I think high point of the year is "Replaced Kevin Lowe and MacT with somebody" Somebody could have been "Ham Sandwich" and it would have been a phenomenal step in the right direction. That it was Chiarelli is extremely good for them. Most Oiler fans are happier with this than with getting McDavid
Mossin
Great way to list the season, yave1964!I think getting McDavid and Chiarelli so early in the offseason will make a good inpact on the next season. Fingers are crossed that Tayler Hall and Yakopov (++) will start their good plays in the worldcup comming up 1st of May! And bring that good plays into the next season. Jordan Eberle was a important player for the oilers this season, lets hope he will continue!

jammer2
Whispers have been going for several years that Eberle will be dealt, might he finally go for the lock down d-man the team so desperately needs? I think Peter stays the course. The Oilers desperately need goals also, so taking away Eberble creates another hole in the line up....there is always growing pains with young d-men...but Nurse is special, his hockey sense and skating are special and he loves to initiate contact...they have their shut down d-man, just have to let him grow into the role. Klembom showed some strides last year, 20 pts in 62 games for a young d-man is respectable....although he needs to work on the -21.

Klefbom's numbers tell us two things: a) He played lots of minutes for a starting goaltender with SV% of .890, andb) He was Justin Schultz's defense partner. Klefbom's Hero Chart, courtesy of ownthepuck: As a kid, most of his numbers ended up in the 1st pairing tier of results, and the numbers were better on the defensive side of the game than offensive. He's a fine young defenseman.

yave1964
@MossinWelcome!! I cannot wait for McDavid setting up Taylor Hall. Hall had a bad year last year but there is a big difference between being set up by Derek Roy and having the next Crosby (or better) finding you with a crisp pass. I looked for it and cannot find it, I will try to find the link later when I have the time, a whisper going around right now is Chiarelli would love to add Dougie Hamilton, an Eberle/Hamilton deal makes just so much sense for both teams that it actually makes sense. Boston has no scoring from the Wings, Edmonton needs a real live number one d-man, it makes sense for both clubs.

Yeah, but moving Eberle creates another big hole....forces Yakapov into the top pp...and he's not ready for that type of assignment....I'd offer sheet Dougie and make such a wicked poison pill, that the Bruins could not match. Bruins are vulnerable right now, and if anyone knows it, it's the Oilers new GM. #Peterreadytopounce???
