"According to a Russian-language article in Championat.com, the Philadelphia Flyers are among the most active NHL pursuers of the player, in addition to the Buffalo Sabres and other clubs. The article further states that, two years ago, the Flyers made a heavy push for the player (then coming off a breakthrough season with Sibir Novosibirsk) but he elected to stay in Russia and sign with CSKA."

I don't know anything more than what's in the blog piece, but he looks to be a two-way, right-handed d-man.

Well, I can see going after a player if you can get them but it sure isn't going to help our d-man log jam. I was hoping to some how clear up a spot for a young player. Assuming we sign Del Zotto which is a near "must" in my eyes we will then have 8 d-men. If we get this guy we have potentially 9 not counting a chance for 1 of the younger guys to come along. I'm sure Hextall is trying to trade GrossmanN/Schenn/McDud but I am VERY dubious of finding a team to take any one of them. We can only hope it's a bottom feeder reaching for the cap floor and we expect virtually zero in return, which is fine. We can't actually afford another Cobby deal. Don't misunderstand me, Gudas and the first is a GREAT return but purely from a number of bodies stand point it didn't help. There must be a road map that Hextall is using...

I can see Teams wanting Schenn and Grossman honestly.   They are decent players with experience are not a huge cap hit.   MacDud is not going anywhere - that contract is as ludicrous as they come.   Miracles can happen I guess but I would bet there is no way he is moved unless Homer takes over as GM of another club.  Hell he might give us a 2nd rounder for MacDud ;)

@fanaticV3.0 - your post had me cracking up - good stuff.

Well, it is time about that time for another best player not in the NHL. We haven't had one in a while.

i didn't get a juri dopita vibe from that article just that the guy may be ready to try the NHL and the Flyers are pursuing him...i'd be fine with having the elbow swinging , good skating, accurate shooting russian on our team , for a change.

the best player not in the NHL is currently a healthy scratch for team Canada at the worlds  :D

I honestly don't know how we could afford to out-pay the KHL on a guy like that right now.  Unless he comes for a year just to leave and get the buy-back fee.

KK, apparently things aren't real rosy for the KHL from a financial standpoint. Here's a bit from a December piece:

Former Canadian World Junior hero Jeff Glass is on his fifth team in six seasons in Russia and he has seen a lot of both the good and bad of the Kontinental Hockey League. But with the Russian ruble in a freefall and the league in disarray, this is the worst he’s ever seen it.

With boots on the ground, or at least skates on the ice, Glass puts a face to the stories that have been circulating throughout the hockey world about the KHL lately. Glass, who backstopped the 2005 Canadian junior team to a gold medal, but never played in the NHL, said he is thankful for the opportunity the KHL has given him to continue playing and make lucrative money, but it seems to him the whole thing is teetering on the brink of collapse.

It’s not good here right now,” Glass told thn.com in a telephone interview. “Guys are looking to get out. I’m not trying to expose the league, but none of this is right and the players are getting hosed right now and there’s no representation here. Everything had been fair up until about last season and things seem to be falling apart right now. And the ruble is making it tenfold because everyone is starting to panic.”

Yeah I don't think things will have changed much since December. But the Russian-born players are in better shape than North Americans. They will, in effect, be treated differently. I think now is the right time for the Flyers to be aggressively pursuing players like this....

I get a Jiri Dopita vibe from everybody not in the league that we like. I am incapable of not thinking that way. I don't have a problem taking a chance on him if it doesn't cost too much money. I just never get too excited about unproven players until they prove something.

C'mon, Phil Kessel isn't the standard for North American players!
