Off-Season Game Plan - Philadelphia Flyers

Recommended Posts

"If they shed some salary, with a trade of a defenceman and a buyout of Lecavalier, then Philadelphia could be in the bidding for quality free agents like Justin Williams and Jarret Stoll, who played for the Flyers’ West Coast branch in L.A.,"

interesting read you say? more like uninformed lol.

Unless he meant quality 4th liner up on coke charges

Edit: or is the plan to get Umberger, Mcdud and VLC to overdose?

I agree with Cullen's view on their positional needs. Funny how what they needed last year is exactly what they still need now. I like Matt Beleskey, good speed, likes to go into the corners for the puck. In a perfect world, I would want Nick Foligno, but he makes what, over $4 mil? I don't know if the Flyers want to invest that much in him, but I think he would be worth it, being he scored 31 goals last season. They have to address the defense first, however, IMHO.

Wait a sec, there's a "game plan"??

That's freakin' it!!! If they are gonna go and try a game plan I am OUTTA here. I want more of Ed, Bobby and Paul throwing darts at the wall....

The next thing you will be telling me is they are NOT trading away their draft picks for 36 year olds. Pure hokum!

No to Stoll. I mean why bother? The guy makes 3.25mm next season and would be basically a 4th line center.

Williams is also not first line material and he plays RW. They need a quality LW to play with Giroux and Voracek and that sadly will have to come via trade or patience and development.

Other than that, it's a no brainer that the Flyers need to shed salary and defense.

I expect more of the same next season. Maybe slightly better if they can figure out how to win a shootout.

Is he a UFA this offseason ?

He's been really good in the playoffs.

But I wonder Is he RJ Umbergering ?  Turning a monster playoffs into a nice payday and then coasting to the finish line ?

I don't know a whole lot about him other than when I have watched the Duck this post season he's been around the puck, pretty good on the forecheck and finding the the twine when he's had the opportunity.   The last player we had with that stone cold killer heart was Lil' Paul McCartney Briere. this guy's bigger, faster and a whole lot younger.

Have you seen him in juniors ? how do you know about him ?

Yes, Beleskey is a UFA in June.

He's from Windsor and I believe @flyercanuck knows his parents or something. Was a 4th round pick, plays with grit and has some touch - scored 40 in has last year in the OHL so he's not completely useless near the net.

He is playing damn well for the Ducks. He has already set a record for them in a series 5 straight goals in 5 straight games...never been done before.

Ducks won't let him walk.

@OccamsRazor

He picked the right time to break out as a goal scorer (22 in the regular season). I don't know how he good he is. He plays on very good team and on a line that is clicking. Could he reproduce these numbers outside of that situation? Who knows. He's gonna get a nice payday that's for sure.

Beleskey is a good player. Obviously he can score. He can also hit and fight (just like his dad) and skate. I'd be interested in him but it might get into a bidding war with the low quality of FAs this year...and I'd prefer the Flyers to stay the heck out of those

Guy strikes me as a David Clarkson waiting to happen. Have one solid scoring season in a contract year and parlay it into a big deal in a weak UFA market.

He scored at a .33 gpg clip this past season, which is up from .13 gpg in his previous five seasons. Clarkson had one year at .375 gpg and is .175 gpg outside of that year.

Someone wants to pony up huge bucks for this guy? Let them.

So basically he thinks we need to free up cap space that has been eaten up by bad free agent contracts . . . so we can take on more bad free agent contracts?

Brilliant.

Beleskey has a niche skillset. He can skate, forecheck and go to the net. A poor man's Milan Lucic.

Any play in which the puck gets to his stick in which he is not releasing it or cycling it right away is destined to die because he sucks with the puck.

Yeah - not exactly a guy I'm going to be throwing $4-5M at in free agency.

"Scored 20 once" doesn't speak to me as a consistent 20/50 guy.

I'm not saying Beleskey "sucks" - just that he's not worth backing a Brinks truck up for. I just have a feeling some idiot's going to be stuck with a $5M "did it once" player - for five or six years.

Another blessing to count in the "Homer's not here" department. #Ihope

The big thing with Belesky...had a GREAT opportunity to stick with the DUcks #1 line of Perry and Getzlaf....he got demoted and eventually press boxed for lack of effort...that's all I need to know.

God I hope those three are better at darts than they are at cap maanagement.
