AJgoal
I always thought Gus had the ability to be an NHL regular, and that he was horribly mismanaged in his last season here, being held as the number 7 when he needed to play in games. Apparently he's had talks with the Flyers:Great to hear but they have a gluttony of defensemen now. Hexy has his work cut out for sure he has MDZ to tender then he still has guys who have to go to make room and still it will be tight.Once again like with Zac there was no need to resign Shultz during the season... but no...Hexy and Homer feel the need to sign these dime-a-dozen type guys like the NHL is about to have a shortage or something... Me too.....and I always took a lot of grief for sticking up for him....lol. Hopefully he comes back (don't see it being with the Flyers, but ya never know!)....becomes an NHL regular and all the Gus supporters can give themselves a big pat on the back!! jammer2
I agree with the other poster who said Gus wasn't really handled properly. Quelle surprise Always thought that. Flyers mismanaged him to the hilt. A mobile d-man who is fairly smart......and has a decent about of offensive upside.....you don't let stuff like that go, you work it slowly into your top 6. Gus is easily one of our top 6 d-men. I'll never forget when he was inserted into the playoffs last year and he scored that beauty coming out of the penalty box....we was FLYING on that goal. AJgoal
The Flyers really don't have a glut of defensemen, and of the 7 they have with real NHL experience, they probably can move any but MacDonald. I don't see them trading Streit or MDZ, but Grossmann, Schenn, and even Schultz or Gudas should be moveable during the offseason if Hextall were to re-sign Gus or manage to land Zaitsev. Alternately, Gus still has decent upside and could be used as trade bait himself. I think moving one more Dman than they bring in is ideal, giving Manning a shot full time. MacDonald is the real handicap - I'd bury him in the AHL and call it a day, but you're going to need that cap space sometime.
RJ8812
Gus is a bottom pairing defenseman, which our team is already full off. But I would definitely rather have him than Grossmann, Schenn, MacDonald....
brelic
There's gotta be a team that would take MacDud for a 2nd rounder, right? Edmonton? Florida? Arizona? Winnipeg?
Podein25
There's gotta be a team that would take MacDud for a 2nd rounder, right? Edmonton? Florida? Arizona? Winnipeg? Can't see the Jets doing that. Didn't he once lead the league in blocked shots for several years running? That's what I'd do: market him as a shot-blocking genius, put some lipstick on him, tart him up and put him in the sale window.
radoran
MacDonald is the real handicap - I'd bury him in the AHL and call it a day, but you're going to need that cap space sometime. Few have been more vocal about MacDud than me around here, but the point that he is a serviceable bottom 3 guy that is just overpaid had validity. It was a horrible signing and a massive mistake, but burying him in the AHL doesn't solve the problem that he's soaking up cap space. Getting back that $850-900K (whatever it is next year) is a drop in the bucket next to the $4M+ that stays on the cap. Schenn and/or Grossmannn being in the last years of their deals c/should make them attractive trade pieces whether in the off-season or nearer to the deadline. Schultz was another unnecessary signing. Occ's point that Schultz is a dime-a-dozen player really describes the situation well. The guy is a bottom pair defenseman - it's not like it's hard to find those. He "looked good" on a bad team - which is not a reason to sign a guy or else the Wild would have kept him in the first place... I'd like to see what Gudas has - given his rep. And, of course, re-sign MDZ to a reasonable contract (the guy is an RFA after all..) That gives us:StreitMacDudMDZLSchennGrossmannSchultzGudas If Manning blows the doors off, terrific. But they have a nice slate of developing guys to move up and he's simply not essential. The question would then seem to be do you make the $2.25M guy (Schultz) or the $5M guy (MacDud) into your seventh defenseman? On the plus side, they're only paying Pronger $525K not to play this year... #homercoaster
AJgoal
Schultz's contract may be unnecessary, but it's not bad. If you find a better option, it should be moveable. If it's not, he can go down to the A, and regardless of any other considerations, it's gone when your prospects should be starting to make some noise for roster spots. I personally thought they should have moved Schultz at the deadline. Yes, I know he had a great year for us, but will that continue into next year? We'll have too wait and see. I'm not mad about the extension, but I still think we should have taken whatever draft picks we could have gotten for him last year

In the A he still costs $1.3M or so on the cap. It's not that it's a bad contract, it's that it's in the way and didn't need to happen. There are dozens of "Schultz-type players" out there. Yes, he played well for them. And that got them... out of the playoffs. That said, Schultz is among the least of the problems. But how do they fit a Gus or a Zaitsev AND have room for the prospects? AJgoal
I would have moved both Grossmann and Schultz at the deadline. You should have been able to get a couple mid-round picks back for the pair. Given Manning an audition til the end of the season, as well as Lauridson or Hagg. I think Streit could have fetched a premium, but I'm not sure I want to rip every vet out of the D-corps. An issue was that neither of them were true "rentals" as Grossmann was signed through this season and Schultz had two more on his extension. That drops value in the "rental/deadline" market.
