Mike Babcock Prediction and Discussion

In the meantime...

Prediction: Mike Babcock resigns with the Detroit Red Wings.

Why: Mike has said numerous times that coaching and living in Detroit is "100% easier" on his family, not to mention the fact that he said he has the "best job" out there. Although he's more interested in $4 million, it's a fact that Buffalo still has a ways to go when it comes to being a Stanley Cup contending team (and we all know how much Mike loves winning). Is there a chance that Mike signs with Buffalo? If money is a serious, high-on-the-list-of-priorities thing, then yes. I've got a feeling in my gut that he will be back behind the Detroit bench next season, though.

What I want: Personally, as much as I like seeing Babs behind the Detroit bench, I'm just not entirely sure if it's worth losing Jeff Blashill. Players that have been around since coach Mike started his tenure in Detroit have been enduring the same voice for ten whole years. Are they tired of it? Maybe. Maybe not. Babcock isn't a bad coach... infact, he's arguably the best in the NHL. The question is though, does he convey his point fresh enough to motivate the guys in the locker room? That's become questionable after recent playoff runs (actually, not playoff runs. More like playoff strolls for Detroit). Maybe that's what Detroit needs to boost past somewhere further than the first and second round of the playoffs - a coach with a different voice. As much as I'd love to see Babcock behind the Detroit bench for another term, it's not worth losing Blashill.

So, what do you think is going to happen?

Welcome.

The smart money at this point is on Buffalo. $50 million is hard to say no to.

As for which team is closer to winning a cup, it's easy to say Detroit, but not everyone agrees. Keith Jones (lol) for one. Buffalo does have some nice prospects, but...

Thanks for the friendly (sorry, hockey tough) welcome!

Indeed, $50 million is hard to say no to. However, I put myself in his shoes (which is extremely difficult to do) and ask "hmm, coach a team that has a good base of prospects and is offering me something (way) above what I asked for, or coach a team that maybe isn't reaching my request financially, but is capable of winning (which is what I like to do) and has a mix of veteran leadership and youth."

Although Babs likes challenges (possibly almost as much as he likes winning), I still think he will stay in Detroit. Again, another critical reason I believe he will stay in Detroit is because apparently his family likes it there, and family means most to him (according to him).

I'm happy he isn't going to Toronto, though. In my opinion, that place is in total disarray.

@TheHockeytown

Welcome Hockeytown,  We have a great group of RedWing members so I hope you will enjoy the conversation on these forums for a long time.

I read this afternoon that the deal may be $6M per year for the Sabres.  I think it will be interesting if that is indeed where he goes as he stays in the Atlantic division.  The RedWings will have a new Rivalry for sure.
