wow!!!!!!!

The Philadelphia Flyers have signed 6-3, 187 lb free-agent defenseman Yevgeni Medvedev, according to general manager Ron Hextall.

Medvedev, 32 (8/27/1982), is a native of Chelyabinsk, Russia.  He comes to North America for the first time after a long professional career in his home country.  He has played in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) since its inception in 2008 and spent three seasons prior to that playing in the KHL’s predecessor, the Russian Elite League.

For the past eight years, Medvedev has played for Ak Bars Kazan, the last seven of which have come as a member of the KHL.  He has appeared in 373 career games for the team, recording 37 goals and 128 assists for 165 points, along with 408 PIM and a +100 rating.

During his seven years in the KHL, Medvedev has won two Gagarin Cup league championships with Ak Bars Kazan (2008-09, 2009-10) and has been a three-time KHL All-Star (2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14).  He has also represented Russia internationally for the past four years, winning gold medals at the World Championships in 2011-12 and 2013-14 and a silver medal in this year’s World Championships in Prague that ended this past weekend.  Medvedev also represented Russia at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi.

Anyone care to guess at the strategy? Are we going to have a fire sale on defensemen? Or does it help to land Zaitsev? Maybe makes a stronger case to draft Provorov?

the problem is Brel - who is coming to the yard sale to buy?

I'm thinking some trades have already been agreed upon and the dominoes are falling....i guess we'll have to wait....something up for sure...

I think MacDud really is an albatross that we're stuck with. To me, he's the hardest to move and I would call Hextall a genius if he could pull it off.

Everyone else can be moved without too much difficulty, I would think. MDZ we keep, and Gudas I would imagine we keep. The rest? It's hard to say.

If MacDud is moved Hextall might prove to be a genius...   Honestly, none of them are untouchable.   I would be shocked if they moved Streit to be honest but who they heck knows...

Wow isnt he the prime minister of Russia too?  Oh wait that is another Medvedev.  In all serious though I don't know what to think.  I trust we are slowly moving in the right direction and can get back in contention in a few years if we stick to Hexy's plan.

All I know is it is more exciting than when we were signing the likes of Hatcher and Rathje!

I would say your spot on with Zaitsev and maybe Provorov. And I wonder if this also helps with Svechnikov.

I can't wait for the draft. I'm going. Going to be 3 years in a row.

Hrm. 32 year old defenseman. I was originally thinking he might get a look at the AHL to get used to the ice surface, but I doubt that's the case at his age. Don't know a thing about him, but at roughly .5ppg, looks like a puck mover. Maybe clearing the way to move Streit out.

Another LH shot, though.

They are having a Flyers Defensemen vs. Eagles Quaterbacks softball game so the Flyers need about 5 more defensemen to even up the rosters.

I don't get it. A 32 year old defenseman who has never played in North America? What's the point?

This is why I'm wondering if it isn't part of a larger strategy, like drafting or signing a young Russian. Otherwise, you're right, it makes no sense for a position that we are overloaded.

I don't mind giving the guy a shot...I just hope that contract is short.

The Flyers signing a Russian free agent is progress.  I'd worry less about the contract than you guys sending a 2nd round pick to Ak Bars Kazan.  ;)

That's funny as hell right there.
