Hollywood
Sept 18: Bisons Start with a Loss MANITOBA BISONS 0REGINA COUGARS 4 Links::. [@UReginaKHSDean Twitter]:. [U of R Preview] : [U of R Schedule/Results]Friday night was the start of the full scale pre-season in the CIS. Prior to this there were scattered games. But this has more of a regualr season feel, with most teams in action sometime this weekend. So the post-game format of my posts can go to a more common format. In a scheduling note, Lethbridge's games have been shifted back a day, i.e. they now play Saturday and Sunday. MRU is doing the same thing. Oddly UBC and Alberta have the weekend off after having played one another last weekend. This was not a great result for the Bisons. All I have to go by is a Twitter feed from Regina. So I do not know who dressed, who sat, who played goal, and no stats whatsoever. It was 0-0 after the 1st and a late goal made it 2-0 after the 2nd. So did a hot goalie steal one for Regina? Did the Bisons fail to generate any offence? This was the first game for both teams. The game was the first in a tournament series hosted by Regina. [Every Link Re: CIS Hockey]After starting the pre-season with 3 straight losses, the Bisons seem to have come to life in their 2nd game in Thunder Bay last weekend. On the positive side, they scored 9 goals after a 1 goal weekend the week previous. Also, newcomers racked up ,oads of goals. On the downside, they still gave up 6 goals in week 2, down from 7 in week 1. With so many new players, it could be argued that they need some time to build themselves into a team. The GAA does scare me. The defence should be a strength and the goaltending should be comparable to last year's.In any event, it is off to Grand Forks where the Bisons will play before 10,000+ at The Ralph. The Bisons do not adapt well to the ritzy surroundings. They usually fare much better in Bemidji. This year's UND team should be quite a power. They won the NCHC last year and will be rasing the banner on Saturday night. They have 13 players drafted by NHL teams. The UND team normally has a lot of Manitoba boys, but now have only two, neither of whom played in the MJHL. Their new coach, Nrad Berry, is a former Jet and Moose. The UND team used to be called the "Fighting Sioux" but that name has been shelved whilst a new one is selected. However, I have decided to dub the team the "Flickertails", which was their original name. Sharp logo, eh?To watch on-line it appears that a paid membership is necessary, at least for the UND game. The radio links are free.Elsewhere in the CW, three teams (UBC, Sask, and Regina) will take the weekend off. I was going to do a pre-season conference-wide arrivals and departures list but that will have to wait I guess. For now, here's the details on this week's opponents:MANITOBA BISONSGoaliesReturning1 Byron Spriggs Arrivals1 Justin Paulic34 Dasan Sydora Departures34 Deven DubykDefencemenReturning2 Channing Bresciani5 Lee Christensen6 Luke Paulsen 9 Rene Hunter 12 Brock SutherlandArrivals2 Adam Henry3 Sean ChristensenDepartures3 Josh Elmes 22 Darren Bestland 28 Kyle Rous ForwardsReturning16 Jesse Paradis 17 Warren Callis 18 Dylan Kelly 20 Dustin Bruyere23 Joel Schreyer 24 Justin Augert 25 Shaquille Merasty27 Jordan DePape Arrivals8 Liam Bilton 15 Chris Stockl 19 Zach Waldvogel 21 Brett Brooks22 Jordyn Boyd 28 Brett Stovin 29 Jonah WasylakDepartures8 Jory Coates10 Brett Dudar11 Colin Mospanchuk15 Chad Robinson20 Aaron Lewadniuk21 Taylor DickinBison OutlookThe Bison roster has undergone an almost complete transformation the last 2 years. The entire roster is eligible to return next year. That is unlikely, since players seldom use all 5 years of eligibility to get their degree(s).In any event, 5 of their top 10 scorers are gone from last season. I had anticipated that the team's success would therefore depend on the success of the new recruits up front. This was born out on the first weekend of pre-season when they scored just one goal in two games. However, things appeared remedied when they split with Lakehead in week 2. The team was blitzed last weekend against NCAA teams. The question for me is whether the pre-season GAA is down to goaltending or team defence. Time will tell. On paper, both positions should be equal to last year.Last season the Bisons were 15-13-0 and finished 5th. They lost 2 games to 1 in the quarter-finals to UBC. Using the 3-2-1 point system used in IIHF competitions and the CW women's league, the Bisons would have been 4th.How will the Bisons do? Frankly, I don't see that any team in the CW has improved themselves over last year. The Bisons have a tough schedule to start. In the first 5 weekends of the schedule, they will play away series against all of last year's top 3 teams. If they can survive the start they will be in great shape for the rest of the season. If not, a young team will have to learn how to keep the faith. Four points this weekend would certainly come in handy.REGINA COUGARSGoaliesReturning1 Mitch Kilgore Arrivals30 Andy Desautels 31 Dawson MacAuleyDepartures30 Andrew Hayes 35 Lucas Gore DefencemenReturning2 Ryan Dech 4 John Sonntag 6 Devon McMullen 7 Mark Schneider 8 Austin Bourhis 18 Brody Luhning Arrivals20 Stefan Virtanen24 Tyler Bell 28 Landon Peel 29 Landon Cross Departures5 Jordan Reeve 20 Steven Turner 24 Ward Szucki 28 John Neibrandt ForwardsReturning13 Brock Appleyard14 Ian McNulty 15 Tyler Giebel 16 Zach McPhee 19 Sanfred King 21 Skyler Hladun 22 Troy Hunter 23 Christian Magnus27 Cody Fowlie 29 Miguel Pereira Arrivals9 Dillan McCombie10 JJ Coleshaw 11 Dylen McKinlay 12 Trent Lofthouse25 Stephen LangfordDepartures9 Tyler Penny10 Tyler Henry11 Dylen McKinlay12 Liam Brennan17 Carter Selinger25 Erik Benoit Cougar Outlook:Like all teams, they will be losing a lot of veterans. It goes with the territory. But they are returning their top 5 scorers and 7 of their top 10. The one weakness is that their recruiting class is solidly from the Junior A ranks. The rest of the CW teams have a blend of Major Junior grads coming in, who often can step right in to the upper crust of a lineup.Their pre-season highlight was a 4-0 win over the Bisons in the opening game for both teams. After that their only win was over Briercrest of the ACAC. They lost, but not egregiously so, to Saskatchewan and Calgary (twice).Last year they finished 8-17-3 and were 7th, 4 points behind Saskatchewan and the final playoff berth. I would anticipate a similar type of season from them this year. To do better their returning vets would have to raise their level.ELSEWHERE:ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS (0-0-0, 5-2-1, OHT36 #-, 1st in 2015)LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS (0-0-0, 6-2-0, OHT36 #-, 8th in 2015) Links::. [U of A Site]:, [U of L Preview]This is the battle of first vs worst. And by no small margin. The Evil Monkeys have won two straight national titles. The H0rny Ones went 5-23-0. This season the Horns have added 15 new players, making this an almost new team. The good news is that Dylan Tait is back in the Lethbridge goal after having had a health scare last year. The Monkeys wobbled a bit in the pre-season. I have a question about their goaltending recruits. But I don;t see them finishing any lower than 1st.The H0rny Ones did not face a CW team in pre-season. They had a 6 game run through the ACAC and their results were a very mid-range performance. They did get a spliy against NCAA teams last weekend, which is all Alberta got.SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES (0-0-0, 3-1-0, OHT36 #-, 6th in 2015)CALGARY DINOSAURS (0-0-0, 5-5-0, OHT36 #-, 2nd in 2015) Links::. [U of S Site]:. [U of C Preview Story]The fact that Sask fell fromn being the University Cup runner-up in 2014 to scrambling to eke out a playoff spot over Regina in 2015 was a bit of a shock. They were closer to 7th than to 5th. They did manage a decent pre-season, however their recruiting class was good but not program-altering. Their website is very short on content so it is possible they have recruits still not publicized. The Dinos have a real quirk. They had two of the best goaltenders in the country, both of whom graduated last year. So now what? Steven Stafford from UBC redshirted last year. He is OK, biut Lazaruk and DeSerres were both better. They have some good recruits, but have lost some top-notch players. I suspect they will be either 2nd or reasonably close to it when the season ends.MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS (0-0-0, 2-2-1, OHT36 #-, 3rd in 2015)U.B.C. In the case of UBC, it was the first time they hosted a playoff series since the 1970s. For MRU, it was their best season since joining the CW. They were s solid contender for 2nd, and a place in the University Cup.I suspect that both sides will slip a bit. UBC lost a coach and many leaders. They could go either way. This was not a good time to lose their coach. MRU's roster still looks good enough to stay at least in the mid-pack.OUT EAST: Link: [CIS Schedule/Results Page]Sat Oct 03 RMC 6 Nipissing 5 - OTWed Oct 07 Guelph 1 Windsor 5Thu Oct 08 St. Thomas 1 Moncton 4Thu Oct 08 Brock 4 Waterloo 5 - OTFri Oct 09 Queen's at RMCFri Oct 09 Western Ontario at BrockFri Oct 09 UQTR at TorontoFri Oct 09 Concordia at RyersonFri Oct 09 McGill at UOITSat Oct 10 UQTR at RyersonSat Oct 10 St. F-X at AcadiaSat Oct 10 Dalhousie at Saint Mary'sSat Oct 10 UPEI at UNBSat Oct 10 McGill at CarletonSat Oct 10 UOIT at RMCSat Oct 10 York at LaurierSat Oct 10 Concordia at TorontoSat Oct 10 Waterloo at Windsor

Hollywood
The CW has a conference preview prepared by Evan Daum. It includes the coaches' poll where the Evil MOnkeys are the unanimous choice to finish first. Here's the poll: Team -- Points (First place votes)1. Alberta 77 (7)2. Saskatchewan 48 (1)3. Calgary *454. Mount Royal 455. U.B.C. 396. Manitoba 247. Lethbridge 148. Regina 10* Calgary earns higher position thanks to more second place votesPoint system: 1st (11 pts.), 2nd (9 pts.), 3rd (7 pts.), 4th (5 pts.), 5th (3 pts.), 6th (2 pts.), 7th (1 pt.) / Coaches may not vote for their own team.I am surprised that Sask is so highly rated. A mild surprise would be Lethbridge being ahead of Regina. And Mount Royal has a pre-series video link instead of a story.Links::. [Canada West Preview Story]:. Hollywood
With a night game followed by an afternoon game, and the Rugby World Cup on in the morning, I have not had time to do a full report on Friday. The Bison game was a very good one which they deserved to win. They generated good chances but often flubbed good passes. Anyhow, it was night of close games. Three went to overtime and in the other Alberta needed an empty-netter to beat Lethbridge. This was a game where nice passes were jumpimg over sticks or the recipient would half fan on the shot, or bounce one off the glass. Throughout the game I had the imnpression that one goal would cause the dyke to burst. Even on their lone goal, Justin Augert fanned on a centring pass from Brett Brooks. Once the puck went past him, Liam Bilton used him as a screen and scored. There was some controversy on Regina's winning goal by Dylen McKinney. The play to him was set up by a trip to the Bison defender. On the whole, the Banjo-Cats were more of a counter-attack kind of team. The Bisons gradually took control of the game, outshooting them 15-6 in the 3rd period and 41-32 overall.Byron Spriggs went the distance in goal, after becoming the Bison starter in games 2 and 3 of last year's playoffs.Of the Bison newcomers, the most notable were:Rene Hunter - He was ejected for a hit to the head. He delivered a devastating body check early in the game and would appear to be a good replacement for Darren Bestland.Brett Stovin - He is centring the top line and they fit together very well with size, speed, and playmaking. All they needed was some finish.Jonah Wasylak - This guy is one big, mean winger. He had a couple of good bursts of speed.DePape's line had many good chances. There were a lot of goal mouth scrambles like this one.OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARDSASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 6CALGARY DINOSAURS 5 (in overtime)Links:LeagueStat: [Summary]Boxscores: [CIS] : [CW]Stories: [UC] : [rp @CW] : [rp @]This was a wild west shoot-out. After enjoying period leads of 2-0 and 3-0, they built a 6-0 lead before a pair of late goals by the Banjo-Cats spoiled Byron Spriggs' shutout bid.Around the league, nobody escaped unscathed. All sides picked up least one point. More on that later. Each side had a slightly altered line-up. Justin Augert also scored twice. In between Stovin's pair and Augert's pair, Brett Brooks scored unassisted from a turnover.Stovin's 2nd goal was the Herd's 5th, and chased starting goaltender Dawson MacAuley from theHillbilly goal, to be replaced by veteran backup Mitch Kilgore.Justin Spriggs was well on his way to a shut-out when Dylan McKinlay (who scored the winner on Friday) burst the bubble with less than 5 minutes left. J.J. Coleshaw added another when he rolled one at the net which somehow eluded Spriggs. The Bisons are off to Calgary next weekend to face the other set of Cougars. Their next home games will be Saturday, October 24th at 7:30 and Sunday, October 25th at 1:00 when the UBC Thunderbirds come to town.OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 1CALGARY DINOSAURS 0 Links:LeagueStat: [Summary]Boxscores: [CIS] : [CW]Stories: [UC w video] : [rp @CW] : [rp @]What a turn-around. This one went into double overtime, so the Evil Monkeys still get 3 points on the weekend. The game was tied 2-2 after 2, and the shots were pretty close at 26-21 in favour of the Apes. In the 3rd period and overtime, however, Alberta went bananas and outshot Lethbridge 27-10. Dylan Tait saved the day for the Horns, and wound up with 51 saves on the night. Tim Campbell (with his second of the night) scored the winner with just 19 seconds left.MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS 1UBC THUNDERBIRDS 2 Links:LeagueStat: [Summary]Boxscores: [CIS] : [CW]Stories: [UBC] : [rp @CW] : [rp @MRU]This was yet another close-fought game in the CW. Come to think of it, every game on the weekend was a tight one except for the Saturday Manitoba-Regina game. MRU outshot UBC 30-17. However Matt Hewitt stopped 29 shots to give UBC a chance at victory. Antilla the Hun scored the winner with less than 3 minutes left.So at the end of one weekend, Saskatchewan and UBC lead the way with 4 points, then come Manitoba and Alberta with 3 points.
