Sept 18: Bisons Start with a Loss

Friday night was the start of the full scale pre-season in the CIS. Prior to this there were scattered games. But this has more of a regualr season feel, with most teams in action sometime this weekend. So the post-game format of my posts can go to a more common format.

In a scheduling note, Lethbridge's games have been shifted back a day, i.e. they now play Saturday and Sunday. MRU is doing the same thing. Oddly UBC and Alberta have the weekend off after having played one another last weekend.

This was not a great result for the Bisons. All I have to go by is a Twitter feed from Regina. So I do not know who dressed, who sat, who played goal, and no stats whatsoever. It was 0-0 after the 1st and a late goal made it 2-0 after the 2nd. So did a hot goalie steal one for Regina? Did the Bisons fail to generate any offence?

This was the first game for both teams. The game was the first in a tournament series hosted by Regina. Calgary and Saskatchewan are also entered. Oddly, this game was played in Ochapowace.

Nothing but the score available here. On the face of it, a 3-1 loss to Calgary should be a big improvement over a 4-0 loss to Regina. But without seeing the rosters or stats it is hard to really tell. In any event, 1 goal in 2 games is not a good omen. The Bisons fall to 0-2-0. Without a report of their Friday game, Bedrock U is now 3-1-0. The Bisons are off to Thunder Bay next weekend to face Lakehead in a double-header.

Sept 20: Sunday Scores and Weekend Update

The Bisons spent Sunday escaping the land of barefoot hillbillies. But at least Regina updated their tournament scores for the weekend, and there were a few other games played on a light schedule.

This one gave Sask an unbeaten weekend and a 2-0-0 start. That would not normally mean much. But after the season they had last year they likely want whatever positive reinforcement they can find. Regina levelled their record at 1-1-0.

The fact that MRU gave up 8 goals must be concerning to them. Of course, they may have been auditioning two goaltenders fighting it out for the #3 job. This is the problem when we don't get rosters or stats. Still, MRU has to be concerned by the GAA. MRU is now 1-2-0 in the pre-season.

LAKEHEAD THUNDERWOLVES 2

While it is only exhibition, nobody likes to lose 4 straight. So it is with great relief that the Bisons have racked up a victory. And an emphatic one at that. The Herd is now 1-3-0 and Lakehead falls to 1-1-0.

After Warren Callis scored in the 1st period to tie the game, the Bison goals were scored by newcomers. Jonah Wasylak and Brett Brooks (once into an empty net) each scored twice, and Justin Augert once. In goal, Dasan Sydora played the 1st and Byron Spriggs finished ot off.

The Molson Three Stars of the game were:
1. Byron Spriggs, Manitoba
2. Cody Alcock, Lakehead
3. Jonah Wasylak, Manitoba

The pre-season wraps up next weekend with the Bisons off to the Excited States to face North Dakota and Bemidji State. Lakehead stays at home to face Laurentian.

After starting the pre-season with 3 straight losses, the Bisons seem to have come to life in their 2nd game in Thunder Bay last weekend. On the positive side, they scored 9 goals after a 1 goal weekend the week previous. Also, newcomers racked up ,oads of goals. On the downside, they still gave up 6 goals in week 2, down from 7 in week 1. With so many new players, it could be argued that they need some time to build themselves into a team. The GAA does scare me. The defence should be a strength and the goaltending should be comparable to last year's.

In any event, it is off to Grand Forks where the Bisons will play before 10,000+ at The Ralph. The Bisons do not adapt well to the ritzy surroundings. They usually fare much better in Bemidji. This year's UND team should be quite a power. They won the NCHC last year and will be rasing the banner on Saturday night. They have 13 players drafted by NHL teams. The UND team normally has a lot of Manitoba boys, but now have only two, neither of whom played in the MJHL. Their new coach, Nrad Berry, is a former Jet and Moose.

The UND team used to be called the "Fighting Sioux" but that name has been shelved whilst a new one is selected. However, I have decided to dub the team the "Flickertails", which was their original name. Sharp logo, eh?

To watch on-line it appears that a paid membership is necessary, at least for the UND game. The radio links are free.

Elsewhere in the CW, three teams (UBC, Sask, and Regina) will take the weekend off. The remaining teams (Alberta, Calgary, Mount Royal, and Lethbridge) are also on their way to the Excited States.

They also played a 3-on-3 "overtime", where UND notched the goal. The team will have to regroup for their Sunday 1:30 matinee against Bemidji State.

When the H0rny Ones beat a university team, the first question has to be "Did the other team remember to bring their skates?" Oct 4: Bisons Beaten in Bemidji

Links:

Another bad game for the Bisons. Giving up 6 goals when outshot 28-20 rings alarm bells.

The rest of the CW went 3-5 against the NCAA, whilst the AUS went 4-6. Of course, all games were hosted by the NCAA teams. So being outscored 14-4 on the weekend should also ring alarm bells.

Not dressed for the Bisons were goaltender Byron Spriggs, defenceman Rene Hunterm and forward Jordan Depape. All 3 of those played against UND. Also, forward Chris Stockl did not dress for either game.

Justin Paulic started and gave up 4 goals on 21 shots. Dasan Sydora relieved in the 3rd period and surrendered 2 goals on 7 shots. Dylan Kelly scored the only goal for the Bisons.

This wraps up the pre-season and the Bisons finish at 1-5-0. At this point they must be relieved that these games are only exhibition. They start playing for real Friday night at the friendly confines of the Wayne Fleming Arena located at the U of M's Max Bell Centre. With no home exhibition games I am interested in seeing what they look like. Friday's game goes at 7:00 and Saturday's at 1:00.

The Monkeys salvaged a split on their trip to the land o' lakes. Once again they outshot their opponent (31-25) and with Luke Siemens in goal they never got trampled. MSU is ranked #6 in pre-season NCAA polls. The Apes finish 5-2-1 in the pre-season.

CALGARY DINOSAURS 0
DENVER PIONEERS 4

:. [DU Gametracker]

Lots of the Denver links aren't working, but we get the basics. Steven Stanford went the distance for the Bedrock Boys. The shots were 26-20 for Denver. The Dinos are now 5-4-0 with one game left in the pre-season.

LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS 2
FERRIS STATE BULLDOGS 4

Links:
:. [FSU Game Story]
:. [FSU Boxscore]

The H0rny Ones were looking like a mid-level ACAC team this pre-season but had a pretty good weekend in the Excited States. They were down 3-2 when a penalty shot was saved, followed by an empty net goal. Dylan Tait did well in goal, considering they were outshot 40-26. Could the Horns improve this year? They were 6-2-0 in the pre-season (5-1-0 against the ACAC and 1-1-0 against the NCAA.)

MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS 0
ALASKA NANOOKS 4

MRU generated a lot of shots (37) but could not score. The game is lacking a boxscore at this stage. The Cougars are now 2-3-0 and have finished their pre-season.

Bison Outlook

The Bison roster has undergone an almost complete transformation the last 2 years. The entire roster is eligible to return next year. That is unlikely, since players seldom use all 5 years of eligibility to get their degree(s).

In any event, 5 of their top 10 scorers are gone from last season. I had anticipated that the team's success would therefore depend on the success of the  new recruits up front. This was born out on the first weekend of pre-season when they scored just one goal in two games. However, things appeared remedied when they split with Lakehead in week 2. The team was blitzed last weekend against NCAA teams.

The question for me is whether the pre-season GAA is down to goaltending or team defence. Time will tell. On paper, both positions should be equal to last year.

Last season the Bisons were 15-13-0 and finished 5th. They lost 2 games to 1 in the quarter-finals to UBC. Using the 3-2-1 point system used in IIHF competitions and the CW women's league, the Bisons would have been 4th.

How will the Bisons do? Frankly, I don't see that any team in the CW has improved themselves over last year. The Bisons have a tough schedule to start. In the first 5 weekends of the schedule, they will play away series against all of last year's top 3 teams. If they can survive the start they will be in great shape for the rest of the season. If not, a young team will have to learn how to keep the faith. Four points this weekend would certainly come in handy.

Cougar Outlook:

Like all teams, they will be losing a lot of veterans. It goes with the territory. But they are returning their top 5 scorers and 7 of their top 10. The one weakness is that their recruiting class is solidly from the Junior A ranks. The rest of the CW teams have a blend of Major Junior grads coming in, who often can step right in to the upper crust of a lineup.

Their pre-season highlight was a 4-0 win over the Bisons in the opening game for both teams. After that their only win was over Briercrest of the ACAC. They lost, but not egregiously so, to Saskatchewan and Calgary (twice).

Last year they finished 8-17-3 and were 7th, 4 points behind Saskatchewan and the final playoff berth. I would anticipate a similar type of season from them this year. To do better their returning vets would have to raise their level.

This is the battle of first vs worst. And by no small margin. The Evil Monkeys have won two straight national titles. The H0rny Ones went 5-23-0. This season the Horns have added 15 new players, making this an almost new team. The good news is that Dylan Tait is back in the Lethbridge goal after having had a health scare last year.

The Monkeys wobbled a bit in the pre-season. I have a question about their goaltending recruits. But I don;t see them finishing any lower than 1st.

The H0rny Ones did not face a CW team in pre-season. They had a 6 game run through the ACAC and their results were a very mid-range performance. They did get a spliy against NCAA teams last weekend, which is all Alberta got.

SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES (0-0-0, 3-1-0, OHT36 #-, 6th in 2015)
CALGARY DINOSAURS (0-0-0, 5-5-0, OHT36 #-, 2nd in 2015)

The fact that Sask fell fromn being the University Cup runner-up in 2014 to scrambling to eke out a playoff spot over Regina in 2015 was a bit of a shock. They were closer to 7th than to 5th. They did manage a decent pre-season, however their recruiting class was good but not program-altering. Their website is very short on content so it is possible they have recruits still not publicized.

The Dinos have a real quirk. They had two of the best goaltenders in the country, both of whom graduated last year. So now what? Steven Stafford from UBC redshirted last year. He is OK, biut Lazaruk and DeSerres were both better. They have some good recruits, but have lost some top-notch players. I suspect they will be either 2nd or reasonably close to it when the season ends.

MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS (0-0-0, 2-2-1, OHT36 #-, 3rd in 2015)
U.B.C. THUNDERBIRDS (0-0-0, 1-3-1, OHT36 #-, 4th in 2015)

Links:
:. [UBC Preview Story]
:. [MRU Site]

Both of these teams had their best seasons in a long time. In the case of UBC, it was the first time they hosted a playoff series since the 1970s. For MRU, it was their best season since joining the CW. They were s solid contender for 2nd, and a place in the University Cup.

I suspect that both sides will slip a bit. UBC lost a coach and many leaders. They could go either way. This was not a good time to lose their coach. MRU's roster still looks good enough to stay at least in the mid-pack.

The CW has a conference preview prepared by Evan Daum. It includes the coaches' poll where the Evil MOnkeys are the unanimous choice to finish first. Here's the poll:

Team  --   Points (First place votes)
1. Alberta     77 (7)
2. Saskatchewan     48 (1)
3. Calgary     *45
4. Mount Royal     45
5. U.B.C.     39
6. Manitoba     24
7. Lethbridge     14
8. Regina     10

* Calgary earns higher position thanks to more second place votes

Point system: 1st (11 pts.), 2nd (9 pts.), 3rd (7 pts.), 4th (5 pts.), 5th (3 pts.), 6th (2 pts.), 7th (1 pt.) / Coaches may not vote for their own team.

I am surprised that Sask is so highly rated. A mild surprise would be Lethbridge being ahead of Regina.

And Mount Royal has a pre-series video link instead of a story.

With a night game followed by an afternoon game, and the Rugby World Cup on in the morning, I have not had time to do a full report on Friday. The Bison game was a very good one which they deserved to win. They generated good chances but often flubbed good passes. Anyhow, it was night of close games. Three went to overtime and in the other Alberta needed an empty-netter to beat Lethbridge. Scores:

Regina 2 Manitoba 1 OT
Alberta 2 Lethbridge 0
Sask 6 Calgary 5 OT
MRU 3 UBC 4 OT

This was well played in some respects, yet not in others. On the positive side, Each side was skating well and generating lots of chances. On the down side, the finish was not there and Regina tended to scramble and give the ouck away at the darndest times. The new Cat in the Net is Dawson MacAuley, and he did a great job.

Here's how they lined up:

MANITOBA

Goal:
36 Spriggs (1 Paulic)

Defence:
2 Henry - 6 Paulsen
12 Sutherland - 9 Hunter
5 L Christensen - 4 Bresciani

Forwards:

18 Kelly - 21 Brooks - 16 Paradis
24 Augert - 8 Bilton - 29 Wasylak
23 Schreyer - 17 Callis - 20 Bruyere

Scratches:
3 S Christensen D - 34 Sydora G
15 Stockl - 18 Waldvogel - 22 Boyd

REGINA

Goal:
31 MacAuley (1 Kilgore)

Defence:
8 Bourhis - 6 McMullen
28 Peel - 4 Sonntag
7 Schneider - 24 Bell

Forwards:
13 Appleyard - 15 - Geibel -  22 Hunter
27 Fowlie - 10 Coleshaw - 11 McKinlay
12 Lofthouse - 16 McPhee - 17 Pereira
9 McCombie - 14 McNulty - 19 King

Scratches:
2 Dech D - 18 Luhning D - 29 Cross D
20 Virtanen F - 21 Hladun F - 23 Magnus F
25 Langford F - 30 Desautels G

While The Bisons still had 41 shots on goal, that statistic does not tell the whole story. This was a game where nice passes were jumpimg over sticks or the recipient would half fan on the shot, or bounce one off the glass. Throughout the game I had the imnpression that one goal would cause the dyke to burst. Even on their lone goal, Justin Augert fanned on a centring pass from Brett Brooks. Once the puck went past him, Liam Bilton used him as a screen and scored.

There was some controversy on Regina's winning goal by Dylen McKinney. The play to him was set up by a trip to the Bison defender.

On the whole, the Banjo-Cats were more of a counter-attack kind of team. The Bisons gradually took control of the game, outshooting them 15-6 in the 3rd period and 41-32 overall.

Byron Spriggs went the distance in goal, after becoming the Bison starter in games 2 and 3 of last year's playoffs.

Of the Bison newcomers, the most notable were:

Rene Hunter - He was ejected for a hit to the head. He delivered a devastating body check early in the game and would appear to be a good replacement for Darren Bestland.

Brett Stovin - He is centring the top line and they fit together very well with size, speed, and playmaking. All they needed was some finish.

Jonah Wasylak - This guy is one big, mean winger. He had a couple of good bursts of speed.

bisons-151009-1.jpg
DePape's line had many good chances.

bisons-151009-2.jpg
There were a lot of goal mouth scrambles like this one.

This was a wild west shoot-out. Well, actually it was decided in overtime. The goaltending stats were not impressive. 11 goals on 59 shots, combined. The Mangy Ones are going with 2nd year Jordon Cooke and Bedrock U is going with Steven Stanford, ex of UBC. Sask tied it with just over a minute to go. Oddly, there were 11 different goal scorers.

The H0rny Ones are maybe not going to be a free square on this year's bingo card. This one was even-Steven up to the ending. Jordan Hickmott scored the first goal 11 minutes into the 3rd. An empty-netter then sealed the deal. This was also not a one-sided game. The shots were 30-26 in favour of the Evil Monkeys. Luke Siemens got the win and Dylan Tate suffered the loss.

Oct 10: Bisons Crush Kittens

On Saturday afternoon the Bisons were much imrpoved over Friday at converting possession and territory into valid scoring chances. After enjoying period leads of 2-0 and 3-0, they built a 6-0 lead before a pair of late goals by the Banjo-Cats spoiled Byron Spriggs' shutout bid.

Around the league, nobody escaped unscathed. All sides picked up least one point. More on that later.

Each side had a slightly altered line-up. For the Bisons, Sean Christensen took Rene Hunter's place on the blueline and Jordyn Boyd replaced Jonah Wasylak up front. The Banjo-Cats replaced Trent Lofthouse with Christian Magnus.

Here's how they lined up:

MANITOBA

Goal:
36 Spriggs (1 Paulic)

Defence:
3 S Christensen - 6 Paulsen
12 Sutherland - 2 Henry
5 L Christensen - 4 Bresciani

Forwards:
25 Merasty - 28 Stovin - 27 DePape
18 Kelly - 21 Brooks - 16 Paradis
24 Augert - 8 Bilton - 22 Boyd
20 Bruyere - 23 Schreyer - 17 Callis

Scratches:
9 Hunter D - 34 Sydora G
15 Stockl - 18 Waldvogel - 29 Wasylak

REGINA

Goal:
31 MacAuley - 1 Kilgore

Defence:
8 Bourhis - 6 McMullen
28 Peel - 4 Sonntag
7 Schneider - 24 Bell

Forwards:
13 Appleyard - 15 Geibel -  22 Hunter
27 Fowlie - 10 Coleshaw - 11 McKinlay
23 Magnus - 16 McPhee - 17 Pereira
9 McCombie - 14 McNulty - 19 King

Scratches:
2 Dech D - 18 Luhning D - 29 Cross D
20 Virtanen F - 21 Hladun F - 12 Lofthouse F
25 Langford F - 30 Desautels G

Jordan DePape opened scoring for the Bisons, then line-mate Brett Stovin added two more as the game wore on. Justin Augert also scored twice. In between Stovin's pair and Augert's pair, Brett Brooks scored unassisted from a turnover.Stovin's 2nd goal was the Herd's 5th, and chased starting goaltender Dawson MacAuley from theHillbilly goal, to be replaced by veteran backup Mitch Kilgore.

Justin Spriggs was well on his way to a shut-out when Dylan McKinlay (who scored the winner on Friday) burst the bubble with less than 5 minutes left. J.J. Coleshaw added another when he rolled one at the net which somehow eluded Spriggs.

The Bisons are off to Calgary next weekend to face the other set of Cougars. Their next home games will be Saturday, October 24th at 7:30 and Sunday, October 25th at 1:00 when the UBC Thunderbirds come to town.

What a turn-around. From 6-5 to 1-0 in 24 hours. Any way you slice it, Bedrock U gets just 1 point at home. They went with last year's #3 goaltender, Myles Hovdebo. Sask stood by Jordon Cooke. The only goal was cored shorthanded by rookie Andrew Johnson.

So who had money riding on the H0rny Ones to win this one? This one went into double overtime, so the Evil Monkeys still get 3 points on the weekend. The game was tied 2-2 after 2, and the shots were pretty close at 26-21 in favour of the Apes. In the 3rd period and overtime, however, Alberta went bananas and outshot Lethbridge 27-10. Dylan Tait saved the day for the Horns, and wound up with 51 saves on the night. Tim Campbell (with his second of the night) scored the winner with just 19 seconds left.

This was yet another close-fought game in the CW. Come to think of it, every game on the weekend was a tight one except for the Saturday Manitoba-Regina game. MRU outshot UBC 30-17. However Matt Hewitt stopped 29 shots to give UBC a chance at victory. Antilla the Hun scored the winner with less than 3 minutes left.

So at the end of one weekend, Saskatchewan and UBC lead the way with 4 points, then come Manitoba and Alberta with 3 points. Next we have last season's cellar-dwellers from Lethbridge and Regina with 2 points each. And bringing up the rear are MRU and Calgary with just one point a-piece.
