Hollywood
Feb 13: Bisons Win, Finish 4th MANITOBA BISONS 5 U.B.C. THUNDERBIRDS 2 Links: LeagueStat: [Summary] Boxscores: [CIS] : [CW] : [UofM*] Stories: [UBC] : [rp @CW*] : [rp @UofM*] While attending a show by Winnipeg punk rockers Propagandhi, I was following the LeagueStat scoreboard, much to my delight. Coach Sirant must have shipped his last bottle of Viagra to the H0rny Ones to help them beat the Dinos. Then his own charges took care of the rest. The striking aspect of the summary is that Justin Paulic had a great night. He was first star and made 23 saves on 25 shots through two periods. Then the Bisons slammed the door in the 3rd, yielding just 5 shots whilst holding a 3-2, then a 4-2, and finally a 5-2 lead. Jordyn Boyd (his 2nd) and Jordan DePape (his 19th) gave the Bisons a 2-0 1st period lead. Jessi Hilton (his 6th) put the Birds on the board before the period was over. In the 2nd period, Kyle Becker (his 4th) made it a 2-2 game. However, Liam Bilton (his 9th) restored the lead for the Bisons. At that point, the shots were 25-14 in favour of UBC. The 3rd period saw the Bisons go into shutdown mode. Giving up only 5 shots will usually preserve a lead. Brett Stovin scored his 12th and Shaw Merasty his 14th to insure the victory, and 4th place. When your best players are your best players, you usually win. UBC also went away from their goaltending rotation, starting Eric Williams once again. He stopped 17 of 22 shots. In contrast, the Bisons continued their rotation, switching from Spriggs to Paulic. As an added bonus, Jordan DePape wrapped up the conference scoring title. OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD CALGARY DINOSAURS 2 LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS 5 Links: LeagueStat: [Summary] Boxscores: [CIS] : [CW] Stories: [UofL] : [rp @CW] : [rp @UofC] After Friday's loss the Bisons needed some help from the H0rny Ones. And it looks like they have Dylan Tait to thank. He backstopped the Horns to victory by stopping 43 of the 45 shots he faced. The game turned around in the 2nd period when Bedrock U outshot the Horns 20-10, yet were outscored 3-0. Steven Stanford took the loss for the Dinos. Lethbridge was led offensively by Mitch Makin, who scored his first two goals of the season to be the unlikely leader. Bedrock also dressed just 19 players for the game. Mr. Slate will not be happy with this. MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS 0 ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 2 Links: LeagueStat: [Summary] Boxscores: [CIS] : [CW*] Stories: [UofA] : [rp @CW] : [rp @MRU] This was a very atypical victory for the Evil Monkeys. It was a low scoring, low shots on goal kind of a game. The shots were just 22-20 in favour of the Monkeys. The only goals were a powerplay goal in the last minute of the 1st period and an empty-netter. Luke Siemens got the shutout victory and Chris Collins took the loss for the Bluegars. MRU is a good defensive team, so they should have been comfortable with this style of play. There must be some level of disappointment for MRU, after losing the race for 2nd to Calgary last year and Alberta this year, and having the lead in both cases late in the season. SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 3 REGINA COUGARS 4 Links: LeagueStat: [Summary] Boxscores: [CIS] : [CW*] Stories: [UofR] : [rp @CW] : [rp @UofS] There is joy in Regina as a dismal season ends with a win in the Battle of the Banjos. I hear that for the win the Regina campus will get one roll of store-bought toilet paper for each outhouse, courtesy of Premier Wall. Combined with new kazoos for their symphony orchestra, things are really looking up in Regina. In goal, Mitch Kilgore got the win and Blake Voth took the loss, each making 27 saves in a very tight game. Regina built a 3-0 lead in the 1st period but by the end of the 2nd it was 3-3. The Mutts tied the game at the 19:32 mark and there must have been quite the brouhaha afterwards. Each team had two players get 4 minutes for roughing and a 10 minute misconduct. Hollywood
At some point late Saturday night/early Sunday morning, the CW site developed some glitches. On the [Schedule/Results Page], and many links to "Boxscores" from throughout the season suddenly vanished. Many random sampled links to "Recap" (i.e. game stories) now link to a different game. It seems that the old links I included with prior posts still work. For February 13th, no current links exist for boxscores for Sask at Regina and MRU at Alberta. Nor is there a link to the Manitoba at UBC game story, or "recap". Also, the standings expunged the records of Lethbridge and Regina. Both teams were listed at 0-0-0 etc. The standings at LeagueStat did include their records. Other links were just added late: Feb 12: Regina at Sask::. [Game Story rp @UofR] :. So, not much to add to that preview! The teams are #11 and #12 in the OHT36 national rankings. It was not until the final game of the season that the Bisons clinched the race for 4th, capitalizing on Bedrock's loss to Lethbridge. The Dinos were in serious danger of missing the playoffs after going 4-7-3 in the 1st half. They rallied in the 2nd half, going 8-5-1. Their season peaked in weeks 11 and 12 when they swept 4 games against Alberta and Mount Royal. However, with a shot at 4th place they closed with a sweep at the hands of the Bisons and a split with Lethbridge. Despite the 4 straight wins in head-to-head play this season, the teams have been very close over the years. In the last 5 years, the Bisons are 12-5-5 and Calgary is 10-11-1.ELSEWHERE: U.B.C. In the 2nd half, they fell to 4-9-1. No doubt that UBC has been on the decline this season. Meanwhile, MRU just finished a disappointing end to the season where they lost the race for 2nd place. They were solid all year long. In head-to-head this year it was 2-2, with MRU leading 5-4 on points. Since MRU joined the league, UBC is 10-4-2 and MRU is 6-7-3. That means OT in 5 of 16 games. On the season, MRU had a big edge in GF and GA. MRU was 100-73 and UBC was 72-90. I am wondering what they will do with goaltending. For UBC, Mark Hewitt seemed to be #1 yet Eric Williams got both starts last weekend against Manitoba. After riding Chris Collins in the 1st half, MRU started to start Cam Lanigan every Friday.OUT EAST: WINDSOR LANCERS 2 GUELPH GRYPHONS 6 (Gue leads series 1-0) Links: :. Hollywood
Feb 19: Bisons Take the IOpener CALGARY DINOSAURS 1 MANITOBA BISONS 3 (Manitoba leads series 1-0) Links: LeagueStat: [Summary] Boxscores: [CIS] : [CW] : [UofM] Stories: [UofM] : [rp @CW] : [rp @UofC*] This was a peculiar game. The Dinos came out firing, but most of their best chances saw them shoot wide or high. After the Bisons killed a 1st period penalty, they opened scoring on a scrambled goal scored by Warren Callis. After the goal the Bisons went into a defensive shell and wound up being outshot 12-2 on the period. This could have proved hazardous. The 2nd was a different story. The play was more wide open. The Bisons took a 3-0 lead on goals from Shaq Merasty and Brett Brooks. Both plays involved the Bisons playing hard through the slot and Bedrock watching and putting up only limited physical resistance. Merasty's goal followed some hard work from Jonah Wasylak, who was flat on his back when the goal was scored. Brooks' goal was a wrap-around scored while Schreyer was being shoved by a Bedrock defenceman in the crease. The Dinos got one back when Elgin Pearce showed great patience dragging the puck through the slot before flipping it in. The Bison approach to the 3rd period was just to kill time. Let the clock tick. The shots were 11-4 in favour of Bedrock U. Game two goes Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at the Wayne Fleming Arena on the U of M Campus. Game three, if necessary, goes Sunday at 3:00 p.m. Here's how they lined up: MANITOBA GOAL 1 Paulic (35 Spriggs) DEFENCE 2 Henry - 6 Paulsen 3 S Christensen - 9 Hunter 5 L Christensen - 4 Bresciani FORWARDS 16 Paradis - 28 Stovin - 27 DePape 29 Wasylak - 25 Merasty - 8 Bilton 21 Brooks - 23 Schreyer - 17 Callis 22 Boyd - 24 Augert - 20 Bruyere SCRATCHES 12 Sutherland - 15 Stockl - 18 Kelly 10 Waldvogel - 34 Sydora CALGARY GOAL 40 Stanford (30 Hovdebo) DEFENCE 6 Dow - 11 Dzielski 44 Busenius - 7 Ross 2 Gibb - 3 Walters 4 Suchorab FORWARDS 12 Franson - 25 King - 8 Pearce 27 Edwards - 13 Collins - 42 Walchuk 20 Gayle - 17 Gordon - 9 Kambletz 21 Myers - 22 Cook The three stars were: 1. The Dinos were dominant in the 1st period and built a 2-0 lead on two goals by Spencer Edwards. The Bisons must have had quite a pep-talk at the intermission as they came out dominating the Dinos physically and generating several scoring chances. Justin Augert trimmed the lead to 2-1. And after he did so the Bisons were very unlucky to avoid the tieing goal. The 2nd intermission again caused the game to turn. An early borderline penalty call gave the Dinos the chance to score their 3rd powerplay goal of the game, and Elgin Pearce cashed in. Once down 3-1 the Bisons lost all jump as Bedrock U pulled away. So now the Bisons are in next-year country. The team should have lots of optimism since the entire roster is eligible to return. They will likely want at least one more defenceman. Otherwise any new recruits would have to be good enough to replace an existing player.OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARDOUA TORONTO VARSITY BLUES 4 YORK LIONS 1 (Toronto wins series 2-1) Links: :. Hollywood
Mar 4: Mutts beat Monkeys OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS 0 SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 4 (Sask leads series 1-0) Links: LeagueStat: [Summary] Boxscores: [CIS] : [CW] Previews: [UofS] : [CWUAA] Stories: [UofS] : [rp @CW] : [rp @UofA] CWUAA news: [Derek Ryan to NHL] : [All-Stars] This was a rare event. The Evil Monkeys were outshot! The Banjomutts outshot the Apes 34-28 and Jordon Cooke stopped everything he faced. The Mutts scored power-play, even strength, penalty shot, and empty net goals. And had four different scorers. This ended a 6-game winning streak for the Monkeys. Too many people had the Monkeys pencilled-in as champions, after having swept aside the Mutts a couple weeks ago. However, the Monkeys are missing something this year. They would still be favoured against any team other than UNB at the nationals. But they are not invincible. The news links are worth a look. Former Monkey Derek Ryan has made it to the NHL. And this year's all-stars were announced. Included were Bisons Jordan DePape (1st team forward), Adam Henry (rookie defence), and Brett Stovin (rookie forward). It is noteworthy that five 5th year Monkeys were selected to either the 1st or 2nd teams. The Bisons would have liked to see Shaq Merasty picked.
