CIS BOOKMARKS

The Bisons and the entire Canada West have been slow on spring news so far. The Bisons have not announced any recruits, however the MJHL has announced two recruits. I will put that in post #2.

The traditional post #1 has all the bookmarks you need to follow CIS hockey. I will update this post throughout the season. URLs often change.

Although the Stanley Cup playoffs are still going strong, it is summertime in the world of CIS hockey. There has been a steady stream of commitments announced out east, but next to nothing in the CW. In fact, nothing official from anybody so far.

In the upcoming weeks we will hear of new recruits. My usual caveats are: You also have to verify who is eligible to return but has nevertheless left school. And sometimes a graduated player decides to re-enrol and play another year. So before we know which teams are better than last year, and which are worse than last year, we need all information before us.

Nevertheless, in the CW we have to assume that the dominating defending national champions from Saudi Alberta will be tough to beat. They should lose many players. However they will no doubt scoop up a collection of WHL grads to replace departing players.

The usual main challengers are Manitoba, Calgary, and Saskatchewan. All three will need to recruit well to challenge Alberta.

Developing programs in MRU and UBC will have to show that they can sustain what they did in 2014-15. Regina has been treading water for several seasons now. Lethbridge has a long way to go before they could enter the Christmas break within striking distance of a playoff berth.

In any event, through the MJHL website I caught word that two more Winnipeg Blues would be joining the Herd.

Liam Bilton - F - Winnipeg (MJHL)

- Rarely do you see a recruit who once played high school hockey. Bilton played for St. Paul's and had a brief playoff stint with the Twins in the MMJHL after high school season was over in his grad year. He then went on to play 3 seasons for the Blues. He has steadily improved, to the point of being a point-per-game player. At 6'4" and 198 lbs., he would seem to be a lanky kid who needs to fill out a bit.

[Winnipeg Blues Profile]

Brett Brooks - LW/C - Winnipeg (MJHL), Moose Jaw (WHL)

- Brooks was the captain of the Blues in 2014-15, which should make him fit in with the host of current Bisons who wore letters in junior hockey. At 6' and 192 lbs. he is a mid-size player. He went from midget to the WHL and then returned home while still midget-eligible in 2012-13. He only scored 4 goals for the Blues that year, but has steadily improved to 23-39-62 in 58 games in 2014-15.

Other Bison News

Graduate Taylor Dickin has signed to play for the Edinburgh Capitals in the EIHL. Earlier, Darren Bestland signed for the Wichita Thunder of the ECHL, where Ian Duval signed on mid-season.

While no league schedule is expected any time soon, UND has announced that they will host the Bisons on Saturday, October 3rd.

I wonder if the Bisons v Moose series will continue. They have played 6 times and the Moose won 4 and the Bisons won 2.

The Bisons will have their road trips against last year's top 3 opponents done by early November. If they can survive that they'll be set. If not, they could be behind the 8-ball early.

The schedule has not been updated at GoBisons.ca. I hope they get some home exhibitions this year, preferably against somebody from outside the CW just to add some variety. The Saturday games are all afternoons. I generally don't like that. However, my son plays a lot of Saturday nights so I guess this may all work out.

Justin Hamonic - D - Tri-City (WHL)
- This is still a rumoured acquisition. He is a defensive defenceman and was team captain for his last 2 of 4 seasons in Tri-City. He had 3 regular season goals and 2 playoff goals in those 4 seasons. At 6'4" and 209 lbs. He should be the latest in a long line of proficient Manitoba defencemen. He also went to the Alaska Aces after the end of the season on an ATO.

June 17: The Rumour Mill

Bisons-50px.gif

The Bisons have one new recruit confrmed with a link and 4 more rumoured recruits, as noted by some of Hollywood's faithful followers.

Jonah Wasylak - LW - Steinbach (MJHL)

- At 6'3" and 210 lbs Wasylak will add some typical Manitoba size to the wing. He also chipped in 15 goals in 60 games at the MJHL level. He can also throw 'em. Check out the You Tube video. Pistons' fans liked this guy. His commitment was announced at the MJHL site.

[You Tube fight video]

The rumoured recruits include 3 with WHL experience and one transfer from the NCAA.

Adam Henry - D - Lethbridge/Seattle/Saskatoon/Portland (WHL)

- He would be yet another Winnipeg boy coming home to play defence. Henry has an offensive up-side. He had 11 goals in 67 games, plus 5 more in 17 playoff games. He also once wore an "A" in Seattle before being dealt to Saskatoon.

Links:

[Elite Prospects] : [IHDB] : [Wikia]

[WHL Profile] : [Shnarped Profile]

Brett Stovin - RW - Saskatoon (WHL)/Missouri (ECHL)

- The Bison shopping list was headed by the recruitment of a forward who could score. Stovin had 29 goals in the Dub last year and then 5 more in 8 games in an end-of-season stint in the ECHL. While in Saskatoon he took a few courses at the U of S, where he no doubt was happy to escape.

Links:

[Elite Prospects] : [IHDB] : [Wikia]

[WHL Profile] : [Interlake Today]

[You Tube fight video]

Jordyn Boyd - LW - Everett/Kootenay (WHL)/Saints/Portage (MJHL)

- Boyd is the younger brother of former NHLer Dustin Boyd. He returned home from the Dub to win a national title with the Portage Terriers. He had 30 goals in 50 games in the MJ, and another 6 goals in 12 playoff games. Dustin was born in Winnipeg but Jordyn suffered the humiliation of being born in Regina. The family then had the good sense to return to Manitoba for Jordyn's minor hockey. Phew.

Links:

[Elite Prospects] : [IHDB] : [Wikia]

[WHL Profile] : [Terrier Profile]

[You Tube fight video]

Hudson Friesen - LW - Alaska-Anchorage (NCAA)/Selkirk (MJHL)

- This Selkirk Steeler grad is coming back after 2 seasons way up north in Alaska. The new CIS rules mean he does not have to red-shirt for a season. In his last 2 seasons at Selkirk he scored 61 goals in 116 games. At the UAA he never had much ice time, which could be his reason for leaving.

- Outside of Lethbridge there have been no official announcements from any CW team. In fact, only UBC, Regina, and Calgary issued stories in their spin on the schedule release. CW-condensed.jpg
- There have been no recruiting announcements over the last week. However, some teams have posted schedules, and Lethbridge and Regina have included pre-season games. Calgary, Manitoba and UBC have regular season only. Alberta and Mount Royal are stuck in 2014-15. And Sask doesn't even have a website (just a splash page with a football ad). Here is what we know:

UBC has now added their exhibition games to their schedule. Manitoba and Calgary have regular season games only. Mount Royal still has the 2014-15 schedule. Alberta has no schedule link. Saskatchewan's site is under development and remains just a splash page with a football schedule and off-site links.

UBC will face just one team from the CIS, namely the two-time defending champion Alberta Evil Monkeys. However they will meet them 3 times. Additionally, they will face the Simon Fraser Clown (of the BCIHL) and the NAIT Ooks (of the ACAC) to open and close their pre-season. UBC usually has some games against NCAA teams, but not this year.

Here's the schedule:

Sep 10 Simon Fraser at UBC
Sep 12 Alberta v UBC (at Kamloops)
Sep 13 Alberta v UBC (at Kamloops)
Sep 26 UBC at Alberta
Sep 27 UBC at NAIT

2015-1965-e-col-memories-supplied-july22

The 1965 Bisons won the University Cup and held their 50th anniversary get-together on July 10-11. The picture comes from The Free Press. It was also announced that they are getting into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame.

The official team site has yet to report the foregoing, or confirm any recruits. However, the Winkler Flyers have announced that goaltender Dasan Sydora has committed. Here's his blurb:

Dasan Sydora - G - Winkler (MJHL) / LaRonge (SJHL)
- The Bisons have two goaltenders eligible to return (Byron Spriggs and Deven Dubyk) and always need a 3rd. He should be able to challenge for playing time but like all MJHL recruits needs to face the prospect of a year spent mostly in the stands. He does have soime good numbers and won a scholarship. He is originally from Alberta.

CW-condensed.jpg

This is the year of the non-updates in Bison hockey. The last story posted at GoBisons.ca was the one about the Allan Cup. The exhibition schedule has yet to be added. From other sites, this is what I have compiled:
Sep 18 Manitoba v Regina (at Ochapowace)
Sep 19 Calgary v Manitoba (at Regina)
Sep 25 Manitoba at Lakehead (OUA)
Sep 26 Manitoba at Lakehead (OUA)
Oct 03 Manitoba at North Dakota (NCAA)
Oct 04 Manitoba at Bemidji State (NCAA)

I would think the team will have games on Sept 11-12 as well, and hopefully home games. If so the opponent would have to be Saskatchewan, MRU, or a team outside of the CW since everybody else is spoken for.

None of the recruits reported from other sources have been confirmed at GoBisons.ca. The roster page lists 2014-15 and that often does not change until exhibition play begins.

In other news:

- CanadaWest.TV will cover more games this year. However the games will not be free. One coukd subscribe for everything or for just one sport.

- After coaches from Alberta and UBC took off, new hires became necessary. Alberta signed Serge Lajoie from NAIT and UBC signed Adam Shell from RMC.

- UfO has signed Patrick Grandmaitre to coach when the team returns in 2016-17. He comes over from the RSEQ CEGEP league. Jacques Martin will be an advisor to the program.

The Bisons have confirmed that the 6 exhibition games previously reported on other sites will constitute their complete pre-season schedule. For the second consecutive season they will not have a home exhibition game.

As we await an updated roster page, and an official announcement on recruits, the unconfirmed rumour is that the Bisons have yet another recruit in goal:

Justin Paulic - G - Victoria/ Moose Jaw (WHL)
- Deven Dubyk is evidently headed east and Paulic is his replacement. Paulic is a Thompson boy and was traded from Moose Jaw to Victoria to end his WHL career. He is also a New York Rangers' draft. On paper, the goaltending has been upgraded with Spriggs returning and two new recruits.

There have also been a few releases from around the league:

Alberta-50px.jpg
- The Evil Monkeys announced their annual game against the Baby Greasers on September 16th. This year the Edmontonites have gone goofy over some guy they drafted and this game will be played at the Big Arena. The Apes are over .500 in this long-standing series.

Links:
[U of A Announcement]

dinos-2013-50x50.jpg
- In the Town of Bedrock they, too, are making a new tradition of NHL v CIS exhibition games. The game will also go on September 16th. The squad also announced their very large recruiting class:

Mitch Cook • 6'0" 205 Ibs. • Forward • Drumheller (AJHL)
Kolton Dixon • 6' 181 lbs • Defence • Saskatoon (WHL)
Coda Gordon • 6' 195 lbs • Forward • Swift Current (WHL)
Curtis Honey • 6' 174 lbs • Goalie • Brandon (WHL)
Chase McMurphy • 6'1" 195 lbs • Forward • Calgary Canucks (AJHL)
Steven Stanford • 6'1" 195 lbs • Goalie • UBC (CWAA)
Ryan Suchorab • 6'1" 190 lbs • Defence • Drumheller (AJHL)
Caylen Walls • 6' 200 lbs • Defence • Vermont (NCAA)
Nick Walters • 6'2" 205 lbs • Defence • Lethbridge (WHL)
Mike Winther • 6' 200 lbs • Forward • Lethbridge (WHL)

While not a bad group, they have to replace two starting goaltenders and some other good players as well. The question here will be about chemistry.

Lethbridge-50pxw.jpg
- The H0rny Ones had two announcements. In one they announced even more recruits. The three new names bring their total recruitment class to 15 players. Jeesh. Lots of eligible returnees either abandoned ship or were given a swift kick out the door. Also, new recruit Evan Wardley will be attending the Pittsburgh Penguins' camp. So maybe he won't be playing for the Horns anyhow. Here are new recruits:

Evan Wardley * 6'3" 218 lbs * Defence * Seattle (WHL)
Zane Jones * 6'3" 210 lbs * Left Wing * Vancouver/ Lethbridge (WHL)
Mitch Makin * 6'3" 185 lbs * Right Wing * Alberni Valley (BCHL)

The Evil Monkeys avenged last year's surprise loss to their rural cousins from UA-Augustana. Despite outshooting them by a mile or two, the Apes lost 6-0. They also had an early loss to UBC, but rebounded nicely for the regular season. There are no links to a summary or game story as I post. The score came from Twitter:

Four Teams, Four Leagues, Face-off on Friday

OUT OF TOWN SCOREBOARD

September 4, 2014

Teams from the German Oberliga, the OUA, the CWUAA, and the ACAC faced off in inter-league pre-season hockey on Friday night in a pair of unique match-ups.

The Peiting team plays in the Oberliga, which is Germany's 3rd tier league. That league is divided into regional divisions and is semi-pro. They placed 6th of 12 in their division last year. CIS tams usually face 2nd tier German teams, like the Pinguins, Cannibals, and Star-Bulls. So I guess Cartoon U will be happy with the win but not yet planning a parade.

The H0rny Ones picked up a surprisingly close win over an ACAC foe. All I have to go by is a few Tweets. Oddly, Lethbridge will not face any other CW teams in the pre-season. They play 6 games (5 more) against ACAC teams and then a 2 game roadtrip against NCAA teams. In one bit of great news, goaltender Dylan Tait suited up for Lethbridge. He missed most of last season with a cancer scare. So good luck to him.

The good news for Portage College is that they doubled their offensive output from Friday night. And they are young men and still have their health.

This game was 1-1 after 1 and 6-1 after 2. The Twitter feed lists the scorers. No summaries or stories have been posted for either game.

The H0rny Ones will tangle with Red Deer College, another ACAC team, in a double-header next weekend. Last season Portage was 1-29-0-2 whilst Red Deer was 15-13-1-3. (The ACAC still has tied games.)

The Bisons do not play any games next weekend either. They will start with a game against Regina in Ochapowace on September 18th.

UBC not only started the season, they also officially announced their recruiting class.

The new recruits consist of 5 defencemen and 3 forwards, all having played some time in the WHL:

JOEL HAMILTON - 5'10 left wing/centre - Vancouver/Kamloops (WHL)
AUSTIN VETTERL - 5'11 right wing - Kootenay(WHL)
CHASE CLAYTON - 5'11 centre - Saskatoon(WHL)/Brooks (AJHL)
KYLE BECKER - 6'4 defenceman - Medicine Hat(WHL)
DEVAN FAFARD - 6'0 defenceman - Red Deer/Lethbridge(WHL)
JOSH CONNOLLY - 5'11 defenceman - Kamloops/Prince George(WHL)
RAYMOND GREWAL - 6'2 defenceman - Prince George (BCHL)/Prince Albert (WHL)
RILEY GUENTHER - 6'0 defenceman - Vernon (BCHL)

The departures include:
Cole Wilson - led team in goals, 2nd in points
Manraj Hayer - 5th in points
Nate Fleming - 6th in points
Joe Antilla - 7th in points
Greg Fraser - 8th in points
Adam Rossignol - 9th in points
Ben Schmidt - 12th in points
Brad Hoban - 14th in points
Linden Saip - 15th in points
Brendon Wall - 17th in points
Jason Yee - 18th in points
Robert Lindores - 22nd in points
Justin Georgeson - 23rd in points

The recruiting class is pretty good. However they lose 6 of their top 10 scorers and 5 of their top 6 defencemen. And they have a new coach.

So how did they look on the ice? Well, they shut the door on The Clown. But that is to be expected against BCIHL opposition. It was basically the 2nd period that put ths one away. UBC outshot The Clown 17-4 and scored 5 goals. Other than that the shots were just 17-13 for the Tweety-Birds.

McGill always play a wide-open style, and did so again to start the season. The amassed 40 shots. What's up with Concordia? They look like the sub-syandard team they have been for years now after having been the dominant team in Quebec. From 1950 to 1984 Concordia and its predecessor schools (Loyola and Sir George Williams) won 33 of 35 titles in the old OSLC and the original QUAA. McGill went from 1946 to 2008 without a title!

Sept 11: Action Confined to Alberta

Neither game in Friday was sent through to LeagueStat so we have no access to stats or rosters.

However, Bedrock U gave us a few team stories to kick things off. The fact they beat MRU, a nemesis opponent from last year, must be a matter of satisfaction.

Both sides were slated to lose several key players from last year. The biggest question mark is Calgary's goaltending. The Lazaruk-DeSerres tandem both graduated after last season. Either one of them would have been a first-rate starter, so the Dinos went from feast to famine.

This one was played in Kamloops, B.C., home of Thompson Rivers University. I am not sure why the teams came here, perhaps to make it easier for the Monkeys to travel. Wouldn't it be nice if TRU revived their BCIHL hockey program? Wouldn't it be nice if UBC uploaded the game stats through LeagueStat?

It is great when teams put their stats through LeagueStat. Why don't they all do it? So far it is just UBC and McGill to take action. The win levels the Pats' record at 2-2-0 and was their first game back in North America after their trip to France. McGill is now 1-0-1. McGill had a 2-0 lead after one, but UQTR tied it up early in the 2nd. Then that was it for scoring until OT.

Eight Recruits Confirmed

Bisons-50px.gif

On September 14th the Bisons updated their roster page and on September 15th officially announced eight recruits. The roster page still needs updates. It has the names of 14 returning players. So some names would be yet to be confirmed. Here's what we have:

Goaltenders

Confirmed to return:
1 Byron Spriggs

Confirmed recruits:
* Justin Paulic (Moose Jaw/Victoria WHL)
* Dasan Sydora (Winkler MJHL)

Departed:
34 Deven Dubyk

Defencemen

Confirmed to return:
2 Channing Bresciani
5 Lee Christensen
6 Luke Paulsen
9 Rene Hunter
12 Brock Sutherland

Confirmed recruit:
* Adam Henry (Saskatoon/Portland WHL)

Once-rumoured recruit:
* Justin Hamonic (in San Antonio's AHL camp)

Eligible to return:
3 Josh Elmes
28 Kyle Rous

Departed:
22 Darren Bestland

Forwards

Confirmed to return:
16 Jesse Paradis
17 Warren Callis
18 Dylan Kelly
23 Joel Schreyer
24 Justin Augert
25 Shaquille Merasty
27 Jordan DePape
29 Dustin Bruyere

Confirmed recruits:
* Brett Brooks (Blues MJHL/Moose Jaw WHL)
* Liam Bilton (Blues MJHL)
* Brett Stovin (Saskatoon WHL/Missouri ECHL)
* Jordyn Boyd (Portage MJHL/Kootenay and Everett WHL)
* Jonah Wasylak (Steinbach MJHL)

Once-rumoured recruit:
* Hudson Friesen (still listed at Alaska-Anchorage)

Eligible to return:
10 Brett Dudar
15 Chad Robinson
- Colin Mospanchuk

Departed:
8 Jory Coates
20 Aaron Lewadniuk
21 Taylor Dickin

The Bisons usually add a few names at a time to their roster page once the player gets all his paperwork in and picture taken, etc. Then they add the new players once they have made the team. They sometimes add the players who are trying out for the team. I would expect a minimum line-up of 3 goaltenders, 8 defencemen, and 14 forwards.

With 14 returning vets already listed, and 8 recruits confirmed, that would leave at least 3 spots open. If those are being filled by returnees then the line-up looks pretty good. If Hamonic returns from pro then the defence would be amongst the best in the whole CIS.

As the day has worn on, the Bison [Roster Page] has kept getting updated. It started the day with 14 vets listed. As I checked in from time to time some of the 8 recruits announced yesterday were added one at a time, albeit without the background columns completed.

Anyhow, three new names popped up.

Sean Christensen - D - Saint Boniface (MMJHL)

- There are usually MMJHLers trying out, so no big surprise there. The now departed Jory Coates was one who made it, and there have been 3rd string goaltenders to play a season. I would be surprised if there not a handful of such players at camp as walk-ons.

Christian Stockl - RW - Red Deer (WHL)/Virden (MJHL)

- Stockl is a former Red Deer Rebel who did not play last year. He was a highly rated Midget AAA player who scored 36 goals in 38 games then went straight to the Dub. If he could find that scoring touch again he would be the kind of player the team needs.

Zach Waldvogel - C - Portage (MJHL)

- The other names were "out of the blue" but this one was beyond that. Waldvogel was a key part of the Portage Terriers RBC championship team. He was previously announced as a Guelph recruit. Yet here he is, just a short drive away from home. He is 6'2" and 201 lbs. He had scoring touch in Junior A but would likely be a 3rd line shut-down centre in the CW.

CIS-2009.gif
- In CIS news, bids were received for nationals in 2017 and 2018 for basketball, rugby, and hockey. The men's hockey bids came from New Brunswick and Toronto. Neither Manitoba nor Winnipeg nor Brandon submitted any bids.

Sept 16: NHL Prospects Achieve Sweep

The Bison roster page has now settled down in advance of their Friday night pre-season debut. That left Wednesday night for the hockey world to focus on the Saudi Alberta cross town derbies between CIS and NHL players.

The Phlegms built up a 4-0 1st period lead and then coasted. Steven Stafford went the distance for the Dinos. Will he be able to be a solid #1 in the Town of Bedrock?

This was a late add to the Dino schedule against their cross-town rivals from the ACAC. It was played on Saturday, September 12th. Combined with the game against the Flames prospects, the Dinos are now 2-1-0 in the pre-season.

All we got is the score on this one. It was the first game for both sides.
