"We've been to the Finals so many times and played so good and so hard and didn't quite get it done," said Clarke, the Flyers' senior vice president. "It pisses me off that teams try to lose continually to come up with the Crosbys . . . and Malkins" in the draft. ... "The Flyers have never intentionally tried to lose. That would put a foul taste in my mouth," Clarke said. "Who wants to be a part of any organization like that? I wouldn't want to be."

Paraphrasing: "we didn't tell the Pens to suck, they did that on their own. They went all goofy trying to tank. Twice! The Yinzers should blame Lindros for their problems, that's what I do. Works like a charm."

Guy sounds bitter.

What, pray tell, is Mr. Clarke's "solution" to the "problem" of "tanking" (which none of the Conference Finalists this season can be said to have done)?

The Ducks never "tanked" (Getzlaf and Perry were 19 and 28 overall - they have just 2 top five picks since 2000); the Hawks were simply a terribly managed franchise three top five picks since 2004); the Bolts didn't "tank" (they were just terrible and still have just four top five picks since picking VLC #1 overall in 1998) and the Rangers, while spending some time wandering the wilderness, can't exactly have been said to "tank" (they haven't picked in the top five since 1999*)

"Tanking" hasn't helped Edmonton at all.

And, while I believe that the Sabres this year and the Pens before them had management that was interested in getting high draft picks, I don't believe at all that professional hockey players and coaches "intentionally tried to lose."

For the record, however, I am getting off Mr. Clarke's lawn. He seems pretty angry.

I think part of the problem is Clarkie still remembers what it takes to win, the effort needed, the dedication and physical sacrifice, and when teams and or players fall short of that, it pisses him off. He only knew one way to play, balls to the walls....and not everyone prescribes that theory....thus the anger.

I used to respect Clarke. Now he just looks like a crybaby.

and here I thought he paid you a compliment by using star players such as Crosby and Malkin for examples....... :ph34r:

Crybaby? Really? Did he hit a nerve?

As usual, we are not privy to the question that was asked which I'm sure was designed/asked to get this answer. Baited into the answer. And then that answer gets published. I'm sure Clarke didn't call a presser just to talk about the tanking.

He has mellowed a little through the years but he certainly doesn't have a filter when asked questions. I like and agree with what he said

Personally, I was wondering why @hf101 posted a picture of Elton John on a thread about Clarke. At first, I thought it was a clever "Bitch is Back" reference. Then I realized it's actually Clarke.

Go figure.

@flyercanuck

Lol

@AlaskaFlyerFan

He embarrassed himself regardless of the question. The debate rages on... "We won't be upset about losing" being said about a franchise that had already done more than its share of it being equated to intentionally losing games remains the mark of a fool. Again trades were made for draft picks, etc etc that happen year in year out, but because of that one statement it's tanking?

Hit a nerve? No. Lost respect by whining like a bitch? Yes.

@ruxpin

Great Elton John reference! Lol. Made me look at the picture again!

I doubt he embarrassed himself. If you were to ask executives from all the other teams, (minus the three or four that he mentioned as tankers) you would probably get the same answer from them as what Clarke gave. They must be Whinny little bitches too.

I don't know about the Pens. But the Sabres clearly deliberately tanked this year.

If Edmonton wasn't trying to tank they had the most inept people running the show ever.

Edmonton, in particular, is disgusting. But even Buffalo. I can understand a former player like he was and a guy in the front office like him questioning the competitiveness of Buffalo and Edmonton.

Clarke, on the other hand, does have a penchant for coming across like an ass. If he's not careful, Giroux is going to cup him.

LOL - I guess the difference is the amount of space between their front teeth.

And I do appreciate the compliment, as I'm really not that clever.

Um....sorry, just don't see it, Elton John looks nothing like Clarke...not even remotely close.

Not in person. The pic a bit because if the stupid grin. And the hair style (not currently for Elton John. Years ago)

Yeah, the glasses too.

Plus, it went by very quick on my phone and not where my glasses were.

And lastly - - and mostly - - because it set up "the bitch is back" line for me.

You're a hometown fan so you see it as he's your hero. To me it sounds a lot like Giroux's whining over wrist slashes in the playoffs well after the fact. I'm sure we disagreed about that too. You still love him I get it. I lost a lot of respect for him. Yes, whiny bitch for this one. He could've made a clear statement about it without crying on Malkin and Crosby. Seasons the Pens clearly did NOT tank, as they sucked well before and still a bit after those drafts. But homer fans will continue to say anyone who sucks is tanking. Never mind that they just flat out stink, and generally do for several years around any significant draft pick.

Was Chicago tanking? Vancouver? Washington? Edmonton?

How about the Flyers? Icing that defensive corps all season then trading the warrior when he could've saved you all at the end? ;).

Come on man... Teams just suck sometimes.
