Couturier > McDavid

Recommended Posts

I was going to post this a few days ago, then noticed Coots became a topic from around the NHL the next day, better late than never.

For all the fanfare on Mc David, He seems one dimensional, a few times in his zone. He could of at least attempted a stick check to stop the opponent two feet away from him from shooting on net, but just watched like a spectator, always waiting for the cherry to pick at and go, no defensive aptitude it seems like. Coots on the other hand can net you a hat trick if he will ever set his mind to it and stand down ANY opponent who challenges him at the blueline. That's just something I can appreciate as well as any coach in the NHL.

Young Mc D has to go back to the farm(work on his D)..ee ii ee ii oo.

@LegionOfDoom

that may be true about his Defense.......BUT...his offensive potential is off the charts.....Defense can be taught.

agree though...talk about opening a can of worms.....this ought to be fun.... (reaching for my popcorn)

Defense can be taught.

nice to see back around these parts doc!

I do think defense can be taught to a limited degree.   It does take a special player to be that good of a defensive player b/c a lot of it is instinct, seeing the ice well and positioning.   It can be taught to a degree but you can't teach a player to want to play defense.  You can teach someone how to shoot better - to a degree.   I think it works both ways on defense and offense.

If you have a Selke type player that can put up some good offense then you have a special player IMO.   Couts will be a 20 + goal scorer at some point.  McDavid could put up serious numbers but if he is a one trick pony (offense) than maybe he is not going to be as "great" as people think.   Crosby *is* great b/c he plays both sides of the blue line so well.

Not saying he is better than McDavid but just trying to add some perspective on the defensive side of the puck.  It take a ton of skill to play defense the way Coots does right now...

@murraycraven

Thanks MC!  Been super busy at work and around the doc household.  Just not enough time in the day to do everything I want to do.  Plus we have been on a couple of mini-vacations where I had very limited internet access.

With regards to McDavid and defense.  I "think" with the right type of coaching, McDavid could be taught sound defensive positioning.  I totally see your point of view and agree.  I'm jsut saying, "if" McDavid has as high of hockey IQ as everyone is making him out to be, there is no reason he can't be a responsible defensive player.  I think alot depends on how McClellan coaches him and McDavids work ethic to improve his defense.

Otherwise I totally agree with your post.

Actually, McDavid is very good on the backcheck. He's turned the play around many times catching the puck carrier from behind and stealing it.

Does he block shots?

Would you want him to? I wouldn't.

Might be less painful than playing for Edmonton...

But in all seriousness, yes, I would.

I'm sure the thread title was meant in fun, but we have a lot of scouting reports in on McDavid, and ALL are glowing. I've read a TON of scouting reports on him, and I haven't found a single one which cited a need to improve defensively. To the contrary: many noted an attention to two-way play, and that his ability to move the puck out of his end and keep it in the offensive zone has a massive defensive impact.

Ron Francis:

“When you look at players, most of the time they all have flaws, whether it’s maybe they don’t skate well, maybe they don’t think the game as well, maybe they aren’t as physically big in stature,” he said. “When you get to the guys you’re talking about, they don’t have flaws that bring them down to everybody else’s level. It allows them to be on a different page.”

According to scouts so far, McDavid fits that bill. He rates as elite on his brain, hands, speed and shot. He’s lauded for his heart and willingness to take a hit to make a play. He has all the trappings of that elusive generational talent. Francis said McDavid’s speed is NHL-ready and that he couldn’t find a flaw in his game.

I think after all the NHL scouts read this thread, McDud, err um, McDavid will drop to the #7 spot and the Flyers will select him.

I cannot believe I am using bandwidth to be sarcastic here.

My take on the thread title...

Couturier > McDavid + MacDonald + Grossmann - Sensible Defense multiplied by (Side Issues ab, where a=slow of foot and b= too much money paid) + Giroux times Voracek divided by anchors RJ Umberger + VLC = Still no Cup in Philadelphia

Thus given that formula, I'd say Edmonton is ahead on the Couturier vs McDavid debate....  :ph34r:

Plus, I also agree defense can be taught, but gifted offense...you either have it or you don't...and McDavid has it in spades.

Besides, who really looks at McDavid and says, "Nah, can't draft him number one...his defense isn't up to par?"
