Possible Flyers trades at the draft.

The Flyers new coach has been talking about, adding speed to the lineup and also having speed and creativity from our defenseman and having them involved in the play.  One thing that should be abundantly clear is ,we have ZERO creativity and speed on our blue line other than from Del Zotto and Streit. We also have two of the slowest and least creative dmen in the league with Schenn and Grossman. So it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out the Flyers will be attempting to unload some defenseman at the draft. Other teams know we have like 9 dmen signed for next year and are desperate to unload a few ,so we will surely be lowballed. So don't expect much in return for any of our dmen.

.

We do have four good young prospects on defense, but we have to be realistic, when was the last time a young dman came up for the Flyers straight from the juniors with no AHL time and put up big offensive numbers and played big minutes? As far as I can recall it was Behn Wilson in 78, Niinima in 96 and Pitkanen in 04.  Wilson set a rookie record of 56 points and the other two put up about 40-45 points.The best scenario for bringing in a young defenseman is to pair him with a defensively sound guy like a Desjardin, Pronger or Howe, unfortunately we don't have one dman close to that caliber. So they are gonna be paired with one of the stiffs we have now and be thrown right into the frying pan. Of our four prospects , Sanheim and Ghost have the most offensive skill, but Ghost lost a year of development to injury and Sanheim probably needs to put on 20 lbs of muscle. Haag had a decent rookie season in the AHL, but probably needs another year and Morin at this point, would be purely a stay at home guy. So if we are lucky one dmen can make the team, but we cant expect him to step in and be the savior. None of these guys are as highly rated and a Ekblad or Jones, who were both deemed NHL ready at draft time,  so our guys will need a little more seasoning.

So that said , I'm wondering if the Flyers make an offer of say B and L Schenn and try to land AZ or CAR pick so we can draft Hanifin or Provorov  , I think the Flyers will take either of them due to the fact that both are considered to be NHL ready and can step in and help immediately. Provorov looks incredible, he just might be the speed and creativity that Hakstol is looking for on our blue line . I know Hextall talks about not trading assets, but this is not like the past where we trade a young guy for an old stiff, this is trading a young asset for another young asset. B Schenn is expendable due to Coots great showing at the championships and the continued development of Laughton and Cousins. We have way too many centers and not enough wingers. Then with our 7th pick we draft a big power winger like Crouse. So we get 2 young talented players and fill two needs at the same time . We still have all of our other young dmen in the system as well as Cousins and Laughton , so our center depth is not weakened in trading B Schenn.  Buy trading L Schenn we free up cap space to sign Del Z and an additional spot on the defense. So then can give away Grossman for future considerations and even trade Streit since Provorov has offensive talent, which frees up even more space.  With the Tampa Bay pick we can draft another forward, or even a goalie if there is a good one available.

Ron:

This is a thoughtful post. I agree that the Schenns may be trade duo.  Laughton looked quite good.  I really hope we trade for picks.  Salary cap issues make that a more likely outcome than trading for an established player.   After watching the two semi-finals this year, our lack of speed is really, really obvious.  I have to wonder if MDZ is a trade candidate if negotiations don't go well.  Another possible trade piece is Schultz; his cap hit and contract length are OK for a taker though some question whether he was as good in the second half as in the first.  I believe we are at the 50 player limit. That adds another dimension.  Cap aside, there isn't much roster space.

Best,

Howie

The Schenn brothers alone do not get you into the top 5, but you likely wont have to do that.  Provorov will likely be available at 7.  You can then make a deal with Florida who will likely be looking to make a big splash to move up to 11.  Last year Florida was one of the 3 teams interested in Vinny.  I would trade the Schenn bros, Vinny, and tampa first for 11th overall, 90th overall,

Who are you advocating at 11 then. Are you saying take Provorov at 7 and then move back up to 11?

@RonJeremy  I think both Schenn's don't get you anywhere near the top 10 in this upcoming draft. First off, the team getting them is adding more than 7 mill+ to their cap next year, and Braden is a RFA after this year, and Luke is UFA after this year, so he's really a rental unless a deal is struck with his new team after a potential deal goes down. Those two combined are just not worth that much. Luke still plays like a "deer in headlights" most nights, and B.Schenn is a tweener at this point in his career, he gets top 6 minutes but does not really deserve to be there. They both skate below average, I just don't see a team willing to give up such a high pick in such a deep draft for a couple of question marks....the other teams have pro scouts, they know how crappy they really are, and how big a risk this type of trade would be...just don't see it bro.

@jammer2

Well he did throw in Tampas 1st. And Vinnie. Which kind of offsets Tampas 1st.  :blink[1]:

Oh, so now the team we are dealing with has to take on 11+ mill in salary.......hmmmm, not seeing it....lol....even with the 1st thrown in there. To much money going the other way.

If Terry Murray becomes an assistant to Hakstol, then I can see at least three rookie defenders in the lineup. I know San Jose had two in their lineup several years back (Matt Carle, Marc Edouard Vlasic), but I don't know of any other team that has had two in their lineup recently. With that being said, if Hextall and Hakstol think they aren't competing for a playoff spot in 2015 - 2016, then I think it's highly plausible to see Morin, Gostisbehere and Hagg all in the lineup at some point. With Streit, Schultz, MDZ and Medvedev in the lineup, plus Manning and his one way deal, several bodies are going to be moved. I really think that Schenn, Grossmann and MacDonald's days are all numbered. And in the case of Mac, they're eating salary.
