If they win, that's a dynasty to me. At least a "this day and age" dynasty.

I don't know, maybe you have to have back to back, but I'll consider it a dynasty anyway

I've always felt like you needed three in five years to be a dynasty. I've never really been able to decide if back-to-back was necessary.

Hello all, I'm new here, I think they need to win this 2015 cup to even begin to enter the conversation of a dynasty, if they do we can start comparing them to the 80's Oilers in my opinion. I think they could be considered a modern day dynasty if they do. I mean the 80's Oilers won the cup in 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988 and 1990. In the 6 years from 1984 to 1989 they won 4 cups. How much different really is that from the 2010, 2013 and potentially 2015 cups for the Hawks? especially in the salary cap era which makes it even more impressive.

Howdy:

I would like to think that Hexy can bring together a team as consistently good for this length of time, Cup or no Cup.  I noted that when we played them last, G was the only player left from the 2010 Cup final.  They kept a nucleus together.  I am not sure what we kept or developed. Agreed with earlier posts...in the post-cap Era, this is an impressive run.  Meanwhile, when we watch there will be some real cringes on my part when I hear about Coburn and Carle on TB....or Sharp.  We trade them out...and play improves.

hello and welcome to the site

I think sometimes we need to think of Dynasties as being one of the top 4 teams in the League year after year, and the Blackhawks surely have been that.

In my opinion the Hawks are going to beat the Bolts (4-1) for their 3rd Cup in 6 years. Is that a Dynasty?

I think this one goes 7. And i don't think the Hawks will struggle to score like the Rangers did...this will be a good finals. Go Hawks! Win one for Kimmo.

@OccamsRazor  Holy crap man, did you **** the bed??!?  HA HA....I have not gone to sleep, on my midnight sleep during the day thingy for work.

Just realized, the LONG line of ex-Flyers with their name on the Cup is going to get longer, no matter what...

 Chicago Ex-Flyers

1)Patrick Sharp

2)Carbomb

3)Verstink (just a cup of coffee here, but I guess it qualifies)

4)Kimo Timmonen....would LOVE to see his name on the Cup.

 Tampa Bay Ex-Flyers

1)Matthew Carle

2)Braydon Coburn

Either way, this time honoured tradition, either 4 or 2 Ex-Flyers go on the Cup in a few weeks.

@trevluk I think 3 cups in 6 years, these days should qualify you. As everyone knows, it's harder to keep your team together during the cap era....so it makes sense to extend the "rules" of considering a dynasty situation. 20 years ago, I would have laughed at the idea of dynasty for 3 in 6....but the new NHL has forced me to evolve while contemplating such ideas. The cap will cause at least part of the "core" to be ripped apart next fall, so they need this win very badly to secure the dynasty title.

These Hawks, they have given me some awesome memories and made many a April/May?June night pretty damn exciting. Even though my Flyers were victims here, still...have a TON of respect for the Hawks and what they have/will accomplish.

Toews and Kane have been great, but honestly, it's Duncan Kieth time here...he is the glue that connects everything. The very best all round d in the NHL right now, no questions asked. Will be interesting to see how Victor Hedman responds, one of the kids who is making a name for himself. Can he rise to the occasion? We shall see, huh?

I would prefer to see Kimmo skating around with the Cup held high over his head...only reason i care about the outcome...plus the 29th pick would be better than the 30th...

Hell i would just be happy with 3 cups in my life time...butthe next one for the Flyers would be my 1st...since i wasn't watching hockey when the Flyers won their 2 cups.

Well, I remember them, I was 9 and 10, and became a Flyers fan when I was 7...so yeah, got to see my team win, but so very fuzzy...would love to have some FRESH memories....LOL!

The way I see it, I will give the Hexy era and the Chip era a chance to win the big one....but if those 2 fail, I will have to quit smoking, cause I'll need to live another 15-20 years to see one of my teams win it all....if Chip or Hexy win it....I can just keep smoking, secure in the knowledge I will die happy.....LMAO!!

@92WickedHockey

Welcome to the forum!

My opinion is yes, absolutely three in six in todays game makes for a dynasty. No question, hands down. And if the Kings rebound and win it next year it means two dynasties running at the same time. Imagine how many cups one or the other would have if it weren't for the other.

In one of the stupidest things of all time....I actually started smoking cigarettes when I was 35 yrs old!!  I know they are super bad for you, but I LOVE smoking, very relaxing and hey....I started so late, I *should* be able to smoke well into my 70's with no real problems....ha ha....plus, I don't have enough saved for retirement, so as long as the Flyers and Eagles win it once, I'm ok with checking out a tad early....LOL!

Some Other Thoughts:

1) Management matters; sharp GMs on both sides.

2) Hockey can "make it" in nontraditional markets.  Yes, there are failures (Atlanta...my backyard Panthers), but TB says with time, a nontraditional market can be come a hub for quality hockey.

3) Consistent with 2, organizations have life cycles.  The Blackhawks were terrible under the Old Wirtz.  TB took some time to get off the ground.  But things change.  We have to hope for the same with the Flyers.  By the way, I don't think rebuild means tanking.  On the other hand, the Flyers have clearly hurt themselves by thinking a few lean years will kill them.

4) Watching these series has been entertaining.  There is physical hockey, and finesse hockey...with no need for goon stuff.  Maybe we'll learn.

I bet the network people are breathing a sigh of relief.  Two expansion clubs might have been a real bummer from a ratings vantage.  From our divisional perspective, I wonder if NYR has peaked?  Nash and King may not be what they were a few years ago.

Best,

Howie

Winning a cup 3 times in 6 years is very impressive. I guess if you put an asterisk beside the word dynasty then I'm in. As in In the salary cap era, this is considered a dynasty.

The Habs won 5 cups in a row. The Isles won 19 straight playoff rounds. Those are dynasties. The Hawks won a cup, then lost in the first round back to back seasons. That is NOT a dynasty.

Different time. Different talent distribution.

What the Blackhawks are doing today is the best that any team can do given a 30 team league with a salary cap, floor, and revenue sharing. If you took the Oilers or the Islanders from the 80's and made them play today, they would do no better. With very few exceptions, every series is just a coin toss. There are no stacked teams anymore.  :o

35!!?? Brother if you were standing next to me right now I'd slap bejeezus out of you! I started when I was 13 because, well you know, it was a way to do something I wasn't supposed to be doing.

I love it but I hate it, actually quit for 2 years and went back

I agree.

I think I judge based on the corps of the team. Toews, Kane, Seabrook, Keith, Hossa, Sharp, Hjalmarsson.

That corps have accomplished a hell of a lot given how difficult it is in a parity era

I started young too. 12 or 13.

Quit for 3.5 years between the ages of 26-30 for the girl I was dating. She hated smokers. But not a day went by I did not crave one. for 3.5 years. I know now I will always want them

Yup even once you get past the physical addiction, the mental part is always there...and the odd thing is that the more smokers have become society's next pariah, the more it makes me not want to quit.

I say yes, dynasty.

As close as a team can come in the age of revenue sharing and salary caps.

you have to go through them if you are to represent the western conference.

That's fair. Seeing as how we haven't had a back to back winner in nearly 20 years, 3 in 6 would make a dynasty in this era.

Some very different things about those Hab, Isles and Oiler teams....1)Uncle Gary was not there 2) the NHL did not care about parity at all and 3)the salary cap was not present, used as a weapon to provide league wide parity. Those 3 factors have forced me to re-think my thought process on what actually constitutes a modern day dynasty. Let's not forget, the cap FORCED the Hawks to make all types of trades and cuts after their first win, and yet another purging is on the horizon. The 3 dynasties we spoke of, they did not have to deal with any of that...the simply added to their teams, never subtracted.
