Does Soderberg suggest that O'Reilly is Out ?

The Avalanche traded for 29 year old Carl Soderberg from the Bruins for a 6 round pick in the 2016 entry draft that was acquired in the Max Talbot trade.  According to Pierre Lebrun contract talks have already begun.  Soderberg is apparently seeking a deal which will pay him $5M per season.

So does this mean that Sakic will look to trade Ryan O'Reilly?   O'Reilly is in the last year on his contract earning $6M before becoming a free agent next summer and is looking for a contract in the $60M range.

I think this is an awesome trade for the Aves as Soderberg played well last season when given top 6 minutes.  Depending on what could be obtained for O'Reilly  this could be a set of moves that is well worth that 6th round pick.

I'd say Soderberg guarantees ROR is out.

Asking for a contract in that range is outrageous and might drop his price in trade

How is a 5 mill a year forward traded for a 6th round pick?  I know Boston was tight up against the cap, and did not have much leverage, but they got taken to the cleaners on this deal.

Assuming the Avs come to a deal with Soderberg, O'Reilly is definitely gone.

How bad would it be if they made this trade and then couldn't come to terms though?

Because it's just his rights, Jammer. Soderberg is a UFA on July 1. So the 6th was just for exclusive negotiating rights for a few days.

Ahhh, I see AJ, all the Ave's got was the exclusive right to deal with Sods for the next few days. If it does not work out and he tests the UFA market, the 6th is not a big loss....and the Bruins are getting something when they were facing getting nothing at all....makes sense from both sides.

Okay, deal done. Do the Avs try to move O'Reilly today?

It would certainly make sense to try and capatalize on a strong asset in one of the best drafts ever. Perhaps they target the Leafs 2nd 1st round pick and take another prospect to even it out....Leafs late 1st and Stuart Percy would be a fair return I'm thinking. Percy is gonna be a very nice NHL d-man, the Leafs just don't know what they have in him.

  • 3 weeks later...

Could not have asked for a better outcome - Avs played this very well. Sad to see O'Ry go, but LOVE the assets.

That is a lot of money to throw a t a guy who only has 29 total goals and a high of 48 points in a season...don't you think??? 4.74 AAV??? Overpay i say.

Soderberg was obtained via his rights for a 6th. No over pay there. Grigorenko and Zadorov will florish in an enviornment with skilled forwards. They have never had that in Buffalo and will do well. No over pay sending ORy and McGinn for them. Plus they got JT Compher probably the most underrater player of the 3. Also got a 2nd round 31st over all pick that we flipped for more picks and an a good pick up at 39 with AJ Greer. In all id say heck no, no overpay! Especially when they are annually paying OReilly 7.5M and already is putting a bad name for himself in Buffalo getting arrested and 2 charges. Classic

I'm talking about Soderberg's contract...4.7mill per is kind of hefty for a guy who has only scored 16 goals in a season as a career high his first year and down to 13 goals last year...for a whooping 4.75mill...overpay i say.

.

I dont think so. He is a SOLID upgrade from Jamie McGinn. Yeah his contract was in the 2 million area. However, Soderberg is a higher point producer. I dont think it is an over pay. I think the length of the contract is too long. Id take 2-3 years over 4-5.

Well, Kesler just got a 6 year, nearly 7 million a year extension and he is no longer scoring more than 25 goals/47 points and he is not as good defensively as he used to be.

Plus, guys, in light of what has transpired recently, at LEAST the Avs have the peace of mind knowing Soderberg didn't get drunk and run his '65 Chevelle into the local Mary Jane manufacturing facility somewhere in Colorado...........

Well of course if the going rate of paying a soon to be 30 year forward (who has 29 total NHL goals to his career) is 4.75mill...why shouldn't Kesler get his right....i mean he does at least have 7 20+ goal seasons. And just look at the crazy deal RO'r got this is just getting out of hand.

I'm not saying i agree with the money that is being handed out but it falls on someone to keep this in check more specifically these owners and GMs....they sign these guys to these crazy deals and then turn around and bitch about it.
