hf101
Pavel Datsyuk may not start the 2015 -16 season as he had ankle surgery recently to repair ruptured tendons that occurred during the playoffs vs Tampa. After 6 weeks without improvement Datsyuk saw no improvement and had surgery in North Carolina. “The doctor will look at him again in three months,” Holland said. “For 4-6 weeks he’ll be in a cast/walking boot, then get started with rehab. Sometime during camp he’ll be re-evaluated by Dr. Anderson.” A lot to be determined on how well the 37 year old heals with only 2 years left on his current contract. http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Bob-Duff/Datsyuk-undergoes-ankle-surgery/216/69575

Not sure why an MRI didn't confirm ruptured tendons though.

jammer2
sorry forgot the link above which stated that at the end of their playoff run they thought the ankle was just bruised. Not sure why an MRI didn't confirm ruptured tendons though. It really is an unforgivable mistake to not do an MRI earlier...letting 6 weeks slip by where he could have been healing is WAY more than odd. I'm no doctor, but I find it hard to believe that an MRI would have missed the structural on Pavel's ankle. The smart move, and probably the only move would have been to schedule an MRI the day after the season ended.....and react accordingly....what a huge mess!! yave1964
@hf101@jammer2@OccamsRazor The Wings waited for the swelling to go down, kind of blew it here. It makes the need for a top six center even more prevelant. Paging Mr. Larkin? Paging Mr. Larkin?

I like Dats. He is a gamer and so beautiful to watch. Injuries like this at that age though? Ugh.

The smart move, and probably the only move would have been to schedule an MRI the day after the season ended.....and react accordingly....what a huge mess!!I would be shocked--SHOCKED--if Pav's ankle hadn't been MRI'd before now. As someone in the biz and who knows how to read MRIs, I will tell you that they are not always clear, especially where swelling is involved.Even right now, my mother is recovering from a perfed colon. The first MRI suggested that there MAY have been a perf. The second said that there was a perf, but it was small enough that waiting to do surgery was the right thing to do. They were both wrong, and now she's had the surgery that she should have had right from the beginning. Do I blame the doctors? Nope.In Pav's case, it was thought that his injury was not bad enough to require surgery. These aren't buffoons reading these MRIs. These are guys who deal with these kinds of injuries to these kinds of athletes all day long, every day. The reality is that sometimes you have to make decisions with imperfect information, and because of that, in the end, not all calls that are made will be the right ones. Welcome to healthcare, which teaches you the humility when you learn that despite our desire for A to necessarily cause B, it doesn't always work that way dealing with human beings. Medicine would be easy if it did. That's why you've got to go to school to learn this stuff for so long. It's unfortunate, but it's not necessarily the fault of the doctors. I know. I've been there, and I know that I will be again. Technology is great and it has helped immensely in minimizing uncertainties, but it is still far from perfect. This is a case in point. pilldoc
@SpikeDDS Totally agree. I work in healthcare too. (hence my screen name...although I am on the med side of things and even then we see reactions to meds that are unanticipated.) Really is an unfortunate situation for Datsyuk.
