First round grade for Hextall

Recommended Posts

After hearing he may well go top 3 Ivan Provorov fell back into the Flyers lap and we may well have got the best defenceman in the draft (again?). There is zero to not like about this guys game, he does everything extremely well. He has the skating and skill that you expect from a top Russian pick but also plays like a farmboy from the Skatch with his physicality.

Moving up to grab Travis Konecny was a brilliant move by our sophomoric GM. That 2nd rounder was dead last, and we have 2-3rds. We pick up a guy who likely should have went 10 spots earlier. Some weird stuff went on earlier (thanks Bruins)

I'm go to go all jammer here a pronounce our picks as getting an 18 year old Duncan Keith AND Zach Parise in the same round in one draft.

A+ Ronnie...A+.

@flyercanuck

Can't argue with anything you said.  Solid A+ for Hexy on Day 1.  It was a no brainer for Provorov, but moving up to #24 to nab Konecny was sheer genius.  Now lets see him work some magic today and trade back into the 2nd round.

Oh by the way..it was fun watching Boston implode....you have 3 picks in a row...how do you not draft Barzal and Connor???  There is a new revolution in Boston today.

Of course we won't know for a little while how this really pans out, but I really like what Hextall did last night. While I don't think he'll get a #2 straight up for any of the current defensemen, he might be able to package one with one of our 4s or the late 3 to get back into the 2nd round.

 I give a B+ or A. Only thing that i'm not sure I liked was the giving up of the 2nd rounder for a kid with concussion issues from what I"ve read. If the concussion issues aren't a problem then it's A

   It was refreshing to see Hexy respond so quickly when he saw the opening to land a talented young forward like Konecny. I seriously doubt Homer would have pulled off that move. Hexy did not hesitate, took the bull by the horns and did what needed to be done. I love how they talk about his speed and tenacity on the puck. We added two fine young skaters here, I guess Hakstol was not kidding when he stated skating was a prerequisite. The Flyers became faster and harder to play against today, what a great haul!!  I give Hexy a solid A, would have been A+ had it not been for Travis's previous concussion. That was the only real downer of the day, but hey....**** happens, his skill and speed far outweigh a previous injury. I was pleasantly surpised to hear about Provorov's tendency to iniate contact...this is great stuff!!!  Can't wait for training camp now!

I did not know about Konecny concussion. I must have missed that while reading up on him.  I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.  Agree, Hexy was like a tactical jet fighter pilot.  He saw his opening / shot and took it.  As I made mention above, I'm hoping he has a bit  more magic and can somehow trade his way back into the 2nd round.

Something else not mentioned about the 2 first rounders is the leadership they bring. Konecny was named captain of Ottawa as a 17 year old..pretty impressive. Provorov may not wear a letter, but leads on the ice by his confident play with or without the puck.

I'll take picks for next years draft to remove some of the walking dead from this blueline......and to use their money elsewhere will be a plus....

McKeens gives the Flyers an A+ for their 2015 draft....

7 out of the top 120.......impressive...man can you believe in the future the Flyers may have to trade off some of these prospect for players for picks just because they may not have room for them in the NHL???

To hard to know right now but looking at how stocked the live well is getting they could get to a spot where that becomes reality...they already have 9 picks each in the next 2 coming drafts...man Hexy has quickly turned this program around.

@OccamsRazor

I'll be happy if 2 or 3 from this draft are impact players. Provorov should be. So should Konecny. After that, roll the dice.

I think they got two solid goaltender prospect to in Sandstrom and Tomek but we know it could be about 5 years before we know on them...but yeah Provo and Koney will make me happy alone!!!!

David Kase and Cooper Marody are my choices for sleepers. Kase was mentioned as a possible 2nd round pick and Marody was being mentioned as a third round guy. The skill and the hockey IQ are there with both guys, the issue is a physical issue with them ( both are rather small and weak), so that will need to improve. The fact that it's something that working out and eating right can correct leaves me feeling good about their upside.

Yes good point but that can be said a lot about 18 year olds but they have a chance still to grow into strong men....right now they are boys...but no denying they have the skill from what i've read.

Mikhail Vorobyov (whom i know nothing about) from what i've read has everyone raving about being a steal.....so time will tell on these kids but man i can get use to this.

  Speaking of sleepers.....A Windsor Spitfire that was supposed to go in the 4th or 5th round, Hayden McCool ended up not being drafted at all. His stats don't jump out at you, but he has nice hands and is a decent skater for a big center. He's 6'2 and 200 pounds, give or take a few. Since he did not get drafted, I'm really hoping that Hexy signs this kid as a free agent. Well worth one of our 50 contracts from where I sit. His offense started to come around near the end of last season, basically, a late bloomer who has quite a bit of upside.

http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=234483

 Central Scouting had him ranked #147 and the ISS had McCool at #174....some real value here. With his size, hard to believe nobody took a late shot at him. I believe his skating is a work in progress, but respectable and should improve.
