The Wings have officially ended the failed Stephen Weiss experiment.mpCFRxRPkfoYJMRSz3x9q4g.jpgPerhaps the all time biggest flop as a free agent in Wings history has been told thank you, you aint gotta go home but you cannot stay here.

Instead of his 4.75 million dollar deal, the Wings are on the hook for a million bucks this year and next with it going up over the next four years.

Everything on the net says the Wings did so to clear room to go after Mike Green. I am of two minds, I pray to God it wont be a case of two wrongs do not make a right, Greens numbers have slipped the past several years. And if we get into a bidding war, how much is too much and for how long are the questions. But it looks like the Wings are going to be a player in the free agency market after all, by dumping their all time worst free agent.

There will be fierce competition for Green :)

I personally want Sekera. Then we can flip Mueller to the Wild for Spurgeon, who they want to deal for cap space. Would be incredible and completely balance our pairings with offensive and defensive or two way guys.

Vlasic/Burns

Sekera/Braun

Dillon/Spurgeon

@yave1964  I don't get it. Green is nothing like the type of player the Wings have historically zoned in on. In fact, he's the anti-Wing. He does not care about defense, which is usually a prerequisite for all Wing acquisitions. Hell, the Green of 6 years ago was not a Wings type player, this current version, the slower injury prone guy with declining numbers.....*this* is the guy you want?  I don't buy it, I can't see Holland going after this guy. If offense is a concern from the back end, there are plenty of other fish in the pond.

The Wings have way to much young talent to have them all make it to Detroit. I'd trade a few of them for a reliable vet.....or even better, just promote one of the offensive dynamo's they have lurking in Grand Rapids....sure, a bit of a learning curve, but this seems much more like a Wings move, promoting from within, than going out and getting one of the leagues worst defensemen in his own zone.

I'm with @jammer2 on this one, @yave1964 . With the meager pickin's of this FA year, Mike Green is at the top of most FA lists, and the price for him will be stupid. We're gonna have a number of young players and a team playing for a new head coach. Like this year--even though it didn't work out that time--I'd like to see how our young players do, and if we are close enough to competing legitimately for a Cup, then do a deadline deal or two to put us over the edge. What may be available then may be a better fit, and once we've had a chance to see what our team needs really are with all of these new, young players coming in, seems smarter to wait from where I sit.

That, and we've got to keep in mind how many FAs we will have at the end of this season with a cap that is unlikely to rise. We just got Abdelkader and Helm to where we have wanted them. They will need to be paid or we'll lose them.

One thing about Detroit's attractiveness in the past has been the chance for incoming players to play with the likes of Pavel Datsyuk. He may only be here for two more seasons, especially if he keeps getting injured. Players are going to consider that, and if Larkin's emergence isn't as quick as what the headlines are suggesting right now, the money other teams wave in their faces may look better. I think we've gotta be smart here.

Remember, this is Marchenko, Oulliet, and Sproul's last year before they have to start clearing waivers. We need to see what they can do to decide whether they are better worth keeping or dealing.

The Wings once had Green, well sorta.

We traded shawn Matthias and a first rounder to Washington for Robert Lang who was okay for a few years as a 2nd/3rd line center. Matthias has went on to have a meh career but is still playing and the first rounder was used on Green.

Agreed fellas, I do not see Green as a Wings type of player. We have needed to sign a defenseman to replace Lidstrom in the worst way for years. In Green, that is what we would do,. In the worst way.

Sorry....had to.

They did pretty awesome considering they lost a Hall of fame Dman. In fact, they barely missed a beat in terms of standings. They dropped a few points, but a lot of that can be rationalized by the constant injuries. Particularly to aging Datsyuk and Zetterberg
