The New Jersey Devils signed David Schlemko, a 28-year-old defenseman, to a one-year contract. This signing means the Devils have 7 NHL defenseman, including the cornerstone Adam Larsson. The deal for Schlemko is worth $625,000.

Schlemko is a defensive defenseman who has bounced around the NHL recently. He caught on with the Flames towards the end of last year, so he might prove to be a good, undervalued signing for the Devils.

Not bad...money is about right, age about right.

Decent addition to a mostly young Devils defense, and a guy, who after playing for Arizona, Dallas, and Calgary recently, knows what its like to help bring along a team trying to rebuild itself.

Stay-at-home type D-men are a bit tough to judge sometimes, especially on squads that aren't particularly good, but the Devils usually go with a defense first mentality to varying degrees depending on who is in charge, and Schlemko may yet find his 'home' on this team.

Absolutely no risk for New Jersey here and low expectations by and large by most for Schlemko could make for an underrated signing.
